Funny, if you gave me a choice between 2013 Strong and 2016 Herman, I'd take 2013 Strong.

Briles took a dumpster fire of a program into annual national title contention, winning B12 Titles and beating plenty of top 10 teams along the way without top recruits. Last year, he beat a top 10 team in a bowl game without even having a quarterback. His success is basically identical to Chip Kelly. On-field, he's proven to be one of the 5-10 best coaches in football. If that's doing jack **** in your mind, then just accept that you're going to be disappointed with any hire Texas could ever make.

    He wanted Les Miles (lol).

90% of the time, you need an elite coach to win a championship in any sport. I think Herman is easily one of the best 15 coaches in CFB, if not top 10. Ecstatic.

I definitely don't think Herman is 100% guaranteed success at UT.

And I did think Strong would work out when he was hired, so I won't pretend otherwise.

However -- I did say back then that Strong was not my #1 choice. I was all in for Saban.

Again, Briles did plenty good. He never took that next step with his team though. Texas' expectations are different from Baylor's though. We get better recruits, so we expect better results than just winning the Big 12. Of course there are steps to get to that point that UT has to go through, but the ultimate goal is to win a national championship. The rest is all noise for UT. The first step is to get above .500 as sadly as that sounds. Win a meaningful bowl game (NY6 preferably). Get to a college football playoff. And then ultimately win. Can he do that in 4 years? We'll see. For right now, I'm hopeful he can at least us above .500 which is better than the last 3 years.

If Herman does go on to win a NC in the next 2-3 years, Strong deserves some credit because he will have had built the foundation behind that. That's really the only thing that's unfortunate about these situations that the previous coach doesn't get enough credit for what they did to get a program to that elite level again.

Les Miles is an elite coach too. I mean the guy's winning percentage in the SEC speaks for itself. His biggest issue has been getting over the hurdle that is Nick Saban. But aside from Urban Meyer, has anyone really been able to challenge the guy much the last 8 years? Les might have a subpar offense, but he has proven he knows how to win. I thought that that would translate well to an awful conference like the big 12. Even though he's an offense first coach, I think the defense he could bring in would change some of the culture of this conference and give UT the path to win this conference most years. I'll give Herman the same fair shot to do the same, he just doesn't have the track record to back it up.

I really hope they keep Mike Maddox on the OL even if they don't keep Gilbert as the OC.

Elite coaches don't stay unemployed for long yet his name isn't be mentioned much if any. The guy won a NC and a lot of games but not sure that makes him elite, that is pretty much what Mack did. Not getting past Saban is understandable, but he also lost 3+ games in each of his last 5 seasons and didn't finish any better than 3rd in the conference, that is despite him bringing in top 3 recruiting classes on the reg.

You can't see straight either. UT isn't a top 5 program when it comes to winning.

    Don't blame the messenger.

I never said they were. It's probably top 7. I'll take that though. You seem to be bothered by the fact that they're a winning program, otherwise you wouldn't be posting this thread trying to put some of these guys down.

Aranda would be a home run. Him and Herman were roommates as well. I'd be happy with Orlando as well.

My comment saying "UT wasn't a top 5 program is what started this entire convo". Feel free to read it. You'll notice nobody made a legit argument otherwise. The poster Brando didn't earlier.... then he shows up again by quoting your lastest post, talks down on me without saying anything about your top 7 (not top 5) assessment. More silly responses from him.

You seem to have me completely bent.

I'm a huge UT fan. Some people just can't handle a fan saying his/their team should be better.

They were getting better year-by-year at Baylor - these things take time to build. What he did there is the same or better than what Kelly did at Oregon or Harbaugh did at Stanford. There are no no-name schools that go from crap to national titles in a few years. And despite starting at a lower point, he won more Big12 Titles than Mack Brown did in his first 8 years. "It's Texas" is nonsense. Texas had a great stretch with Mack Brown - and that included all of 1 national title and 2 Big12 titles in 16 years. Outside of that, Texas has had spotty results since the early 1970's. At its best, Texas would be on par with a bunch of other programs (Alabama, Ohio State, OU, Michigan, etc). All of them can't win a title, and right now all of those are waaay ahead of Texas in getting to the top. There's no magical genie coach out there that's going to guarantee a championship in the next 5 or 6 years. All you can do if find guys that keep making the team better and give them lots of opportunities.

Good hire. Can't be any worse than Strong - the program has hit historic rock bottom.

They're also 7th in losses. 6th in winning percentage.

I'm not tryna dog UT, they just need to do better.

Hopefully Herman starts a dynasty run.
