We'll see how great he is. So far Briles and Sumlin haven't done jack **** outside of Houston other than win a few games. I'm going to take more of a wait and see approach with Herman before I judge him rather than giving him the benefit of the doubt. I don't trust unproven coaches anymore to even win get this program above .500 after what Strong did here.
Umm. Briles and Sumlin both took their programs forward. In Briles' case, he took them WAY forward (at least before imploding, lol).
They might have if they weren't scared of losing Herman. UT couldn't wait until Chip Kelly answers their phone call.
Well Herman won't be able to take this program forward with what Briles and Sumlin were able to do. He would need to do a lot more than that. Briles especially couldn't win a meaningful bowl game. And Sumlin when he had Manziel struggled to beat Duke. I do give Sumlin more credit, but I've never thought that highly of either coach ever taking the next big step forward and taking a team to a national championship game. Briles' gimmick offense would get destroyed by an SEC defense.
I don't think Chip would've been in play. History of cheating and is well known a$$hole. That may fly at a place like Oregon where you really only have one booster to suck up to.
It's going to be interesting watching Herman try to sell recruits on his vision with the ink still wet from his last deal in Houston. May take a bit for him to regain his credibility. Texas' resources can compensate though.
Lol Briles was beating OU and Texas year in and year out and won b2b conference ships while getting a near 300 MM stadium built. Offices for the coaches and indoor practice field was 40-50 MM. All without top 25 classes.
Beating OU and Texas isn't an accomplishment nor the goal. That's all great what he did for Baylor. I'm not saying he didn't move the program forward. I'm just looking at this from the bigger picture and the end goals that UT has. Moving the program forward isn't enough to say Tom Herman is going to be successful and neither Briles nor Sumlin ever took their teams to a national championship/cfp (as of yet). That doesn't mean they're bad coaches, but I don't think they're great coaches either. The same can be said for Herman if he falls short.
The mark of a great coach is the ability to do more with less. Briles and Sumlin did, but it will always be hard to get over that hump of someone that has more resources and is better (eg the Sabans of CFB). Herman has been able to do more with less, and we'll see if he's the right one for Texas. I'm hopeful.
Art Briles obviously has a lot of other crap to answer for, but he took the Baylor job. Growing up, the thought of Baylor ever competing for anything significant was laughable, but he made it happen. Baylor and Texas in terms of realistic expectations aren't close, getting Baylor to be a regular in the top 10 is a monumental accomplishment.
We were getting there man. This past class was supposed to be Briles' best ever by far. Baylor was also ranked for like 55 straight weeks which was only second to Bama. Think about that for a second
"Resources that can compensate"? For what? They've ALWAYS had resources (and they're the first to let everyone know this). These "resources" have brought them ONE Ntl championship in FORTY-SIX yrs!!! These resources allowed them to win the Big X11 championship 3 times in 15 yrs, and since the expansion in '11 they've won the conference championship ZERO times. They've lost five games or more six out of the last seven yrs. Their "resources" can't compensate for jack $hit!!!
It won't be an issue. Every kid and their parents knows how this game is played. He left for a top job. Coaches do this all the time.
Feel bad for Charlie. Actually I feel bad for every coach that takes the job. The boosters and fans are so incredibly reactionary it's ridiculous. We need another lifer. Can't just trot out a new coach every 3 years.
I'm not saying he couldn't have done it. And yeah that is pretty spectacular. I guess we'll never really know until he gets another opportunity. Regardless though, with Herman, I'll believe it when I see it. Do you also feel bad for every coach that is at a blue blood program? That's exactly how it goes everywhere in those programs. College football is pretty much reactionary because the margin of error is so slim.
highest paying state job, so i don't feel bad. and we've only gone through one coach that didn't have it work out. i'm much more optimistic about herman than i was with charlie
