Last year, the Stros added Yulieski Gurriel and Evan Gattis became the offensive force that he was expected to be. They have already added Brian McCann (trade) and Josh Reddick (free agency), two left-handed bats in a mostly righty lineup. Read my lips. The Astros are looking to add one more bat. Evan Drellich has written that the Astros are still in on Carlos Beltran even after adding McCann and Reddick. Ken Rosenthal has echoed the statement saying that they can get enough bats to go around if they add Beltran. Jake Kaplan has consistently stated that they will not go after a big starting pitcher. If acquiring Chris Sale or Chris Archer means giving up Bregman, the Astros are not willing right now. I think the Astros are comfortable with the rotation for now but have the resources to acquire one at the trade deadline. http://climbingtalshill.com/2016/11/19/astros-rumors-luhnow-creating-offensive-juggernaut/ Man I was hoping the Astros would look to add a Ace but those players are not worth Bregman. Hope the market looks more favorable come deadline
The bregman ship has passed for teams looking to trade with the Astros. If we trade for Archer or Sale it will be a prospect trade. Bregman was an all star level player last year. No longer a prospect.
Just throwing it out there. Does anyone think Marwin has any trade value, or is he more valuable to us because of his versatility. Surely there are quite a few teams out there where he could be an every day starter?
Because he has value, and you don't replace him (Bregman gives us Marwin's versatility, minus 1B). Luhnow has said plenty of teams have called about him, but the team doesn't want to trade him, as he is so valuable to our team. If I was the team, I'd listen (as I expect that they would), but it would take a lot to trade Marwin, and it would have to lead to being better now, not in exchange for prospects.
Same reason you trade anyone, to get back something of use. My thinking is that Marwin has the value of a starter, but won't be viewed as as starter by us. He is useful in the sense he can cover all positions and will get a fair chunk of starts spelling others and covering if we have injuries, but all being equal he is a bit of a luxury.
I love Marwin's versatility and feel guys like him are important to the success of a team making a run. That said, of course I'd listen to trade offers if you are bringing someone back that is a clear upgrade in a position of need. However, I would not be actively shopping him.
Well, you have to replace him with *somebody* as a backup IF, and we've seen recently with Duffy/Worth that you can't just plug in *anybody*. Agreed on listening, but outside of a LHRP I don't see how trading him helps the team now. I have no idea his value around the league as a starting 2B/3B nor do I have any idea who, say, Marwin + minor leaguer(s) could fetch. Honestly I haven't thought much about Marwin this offseason, hence why I asked initially.
To be honest, the only reason it came up in my mind is because I saw that Rosenthal tweet was posted. I guess it was posted for the Castro news, but I was intrigued by the Angels seeking a 2B, LH OF and a swingman. Made me wonder what we could get or whether there was anyone we would be interested in that we could move Marwin, Fiers and Kemp for.
Interesting that Houston doesn't have very many players on the 40 man who are on the bubble/outside for the 25 man and who have options remaining. Especially if they make a trade that includes some of those guys (Reed, Paulino, Feliz, etc.), they will be in the unique position of being a contending team with ample 40 man space; I would think if any decent/upside players with options remaining come available this offseason (via waivers or otherwise), Houston will claim them. Right now the 15 "optionable" players who I would project to start the season in AAA would be: Reed Kemp Moran White Hernandez Aplin Tucker Devenski (although it's really hard to see him being optioned after how good he was last year) Musgrove Feliz Paulino Rodgers Guduan Gustave Hoyt
When you have a lifetime minor league slugging percentage (.337) below your OBP, it's time to move on.
They could also theoretically, if there's a guy they like and think could help at some point in the future, take a flyer on a guy in Rule 5 and work out a trade with his original team to keep him but not on the active roster. He's 1 semester short of his degree and wants to get into coaching... http://www.orangeobserver.com/article/next-man-nolan-fontana
Interesting to hear Gammons report that the HOU is planning on a Yuli/Moran platoon at 1B. He also said that Reed would be included in a TOR SP-type deal. I think it's just PR/political posturing...no way we are actually internally relying on ABs from Moran. Right?
Actually there's two open spots adding the Reddick signing, which I assume isn't completely finalized I'd expect 2-3 more additions to the major league club and probably 2-3 guys Luhnow will want to protect in the Rule V. So guys like Fiers, Aoki, Peacock, Chapman, White might be coming soon. Astros are building one of the deepest 40 man rosters I've ever seen
True, but it's not official yet. Also, looking at it just now, they don't have a middle infielder on the 40 who's not on the active roster.
