For those who watched... Spoiler Amy might have a heart of gold, but if I were to watch this again, I'd hate Jeremy Renner for being such a stone cold deadbeat.
Spoiler Maybe I overlooked the part, but what makes you say that? Amy Adam's knowingly had a child with rare cancer with Renner. I assumed Renner didn't know till after the child was born. Tough situation knowing your child will die from either side in my opinion.
I thought it was a really impressive film all around, reminded me of a hand full of classic sci-fi films but mostly reminded me of The Day the Earth Stood Still and Contact. It also sort of reminded me of the first episode of DS9......
Went ahead and saw it yesterday. I love Sci-Fi movies and Sci-Fi is my favorite genre. I think I kind of had an idea going into this movie what kind of twist was going to come towards the end. Even still, I enjoyed it and I think Amy Adams did a fantastic job. I would put it 2nd on the list behind Hacksaw Ridge as my favorite movies of 2016.
Spoiler: more discussion Renner left them after she blurted out the goods. The daughter said he "didn't look at her the same way" and that "[her mother] chose wrong". Adams presumably accepted her deterministic fate. You could even argue that her tragic personal events "saved the world" by seeding clues in the movie, which reinforces her philosophical choice. But the "stereotypical" scientist Renner chose a more unpredictably ignorant and non-deterministic life despite scientific proof of the opposite...by abandoning his Spoiler Queen wife and his dead-but-not-dead time bomb of a daughter. You only saw Adams at her daughter's deathbed. Cold blooded coward eh?
It was really boring bad movie. Amber alert woke me up in the middle of it. Watched HALF of the trailer becuase I didnt want to spoil it for myself.
It was pretty good. The movie is more about Amy Adams than it is about the aliens. Just be aware if you're more interested in the aliens.
NOTE: DO NOT GO WATCH THIS MOVIE AT NIGHT IF YOU'RE TIRED. Its literally one of the slowest, most boring movie's I've ever seen and I love Sci-Fi. I tried to go into it with an open mind and was hopeful based on the good reviews. However it let me down terribly. Who enjoy's looking at Ink Blots for half a movie?......seriously..... They were trying way too hard to be artsy/cinematic and the pace was horrendous. The ending twist was ok I guess. But I left with the impression that this movie was nothing more than a brainwashing vehicle for Hollywood to subliminally push the liberal globalist agenda into the back of people's minds.
I though it was going to be like prometheus. I ****ed up shouldve watched the whole movie trailer. I had just seen Dr.Strange the previous night and saw a bad ass movie alien preview of a petri dish alien monster, I though this was it.
Sci-Fi has been raped so hard that an audience expects an action movie. I'm sympathetic for people going in expecting an action movie, but this movie wasn't even close to boring. Spoilers these alien ships don't use huge giant lasers to drill into the earths core. Yeah, it's almost as if they were making cinematic art or something. The pacing was great. I think by pacing you mean lack of action and kung fu.
Sounds like some of you really need that shot of someone calmly walking away from an explosion in the background in order to like a movie. Too bad for you guys, this one was for those of us who like films that make you think. Those of you who don't need constant action will probably like it a lot. I'm burnt out on the silly all-spectacle garbage like "Star Trek" and thought "Arrival" was the best, smartest scifi movie I've seen in years. Interesting tidbit about "Arrival": The screenwriter is from Houston. His name is Eric Heisserer and he grew up in Oklahoma, then moved to Houston, where he worked for years while writing fiction on the side. He's done quite a few other high-profile things in Hollywood, including the recent "Lights Out" horror flick, "Final Destination 5" and the remake of "The Thing." In the case of "Arrival," Eric is the person most responsible for this movie ever getting made in the first place, and it took him eight years to pull it off. He loved the short story by Ted Chiang and acquired the rights to it, then tried to get a studio to back him on it. Nobody believed strongly enough that it could hold an audience's attention, and because Eric had no stars attached to the project, the studios all passed on it. He went ahead and wrote the screenplay adaption himself for no money, then kept plugging away with his script until he had an A-list star and director on board. That's when the studios finally decided to take a chance on it. Early buzz is that Eric may get an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
For those that seen Contact with Jodie Foster and now Arrival, which is the better Sci-Fi??? I think I saw a nip slip with Jodie Foster so I'll go with Contact. Blame Jontro, I'm just his follower, thank you!
I have to admit I was a little disappointed. I think I was SO excited by all the enthusiasm and SO flipping desperate for a good escape that I had my hopes too high. I'd heard it was character based and tense, but the movie is neither of those things. It is however: gorgeous, impeccably sound designed, cerebral, and idea-driven. It's excellent science fiction, and as others have said, Adams really knocks her roll out of the park (solar system?) But the other characters were just cut-outs. Overall, applaud the work but just wish two things: (1) I'd been more realistic on my way to the theater, and (2) that I had NEVER seen the trailer.
5/10: I love thinking movies. I did not think here. This theme has been done before with more flare. Maybe I have been ruined by MATRIX, LOST ( action and WTF moments, but almost too crazy ) and WESTWORLD ( cerebral with no action ). All three making your mind work to a degree. This movie on the other hand was worse than the Earth Stood Still ( Bad acting, no action, and no direction) and at least Keannu tried to deliver an idea. I did make it to the end and Louis Lane ( Adams) was good, and then there was no misunderstanding the theme and the reveal which can be difficult in sci fi, but otherwise nothing mind blowing and no action. You guys tricked me into going to the theater to see it, but left disappointed.
Personally, think Contact had a lot more to say and to walk away with, and more to think about, tackling the very difficult balance we all fight between Faith and Science. This movie doesn't really deal with it's major theme for most of the movie, and the aliens don't really deal with it either.
