WTF? You are the guy that's been calling for Charlie to be fired all season. You are the guy that says things like Charlie better be fired after this game. But NOW you are content with Charlie? And what do you mean there aren't very many replacement options. THIS IS TEXAS. Texas can go after anyone at anytime. Right? You don't think there are any good coaches that would want to come to TEXAS? Really? WTF?
Yes I know. But the reason I'm content with Charlie right now is because there really are no viable replacements. I'm not a huge fan of Herman, especially now. I want them to get this next hire correct. I don't want them to rush into it because they have a vacancy to fill. Name some realistic options of PROVEN head coaches that would leave their current stops for Texas. Yes the Horns have the money to get a lot of coaches, but these days even a place like LSU is having trouble getting anyone outside of potentially Herman to come over (or at least there really haven't been any rumors). A guy like Chip Kelly would be an option, but it doesn't sound like he's leaving SF after one season. If they find a coach from another top program to come over to Texas, I'd be fine with that. But if they hire another unproven coach and it fails, it's just going to keep making this program look worse and worse.
Bobby Petrino!! He's a proven winner. Sure, he has some baggage. But if Americans can elect Donald Trump as out next President, then I don't see why UT can't hire Petrino. Everyone deserves a second or third chance. Petrino would ride into Austin on his motorcycle and UT football of yesteryear would return. Make UT Football great again!
Not sure if we'd even have Strong if we went with Luck. Word was that Luck didn't want to come in and fire Mack right off the back versus Patterson who had no issues with completely overhauling the department. But Patterson was able to do so much harm to the program that I'm actually pissed at Fenves that he hasn't brought someone permanent in. The entire athletics department just seems influx right now, not to mention there is a chance he could very well find himself in search of a new coach as soon as 48 hours from now. Hell we'll know for sure in less than 8 days.
Hire another yet another coach from Louisville who developed a solid QB? That is going really well right now. Although at least Petrino has more experience, he had a pretty good few seasons with the Razorbacks not too long ago.
Good point. It came at a price though...literally. He jacked up costs and started a BS loyalty program. You're right though, food was better and they started to sell beer at UT sports games. People are allowed to change their mind as time goes on. Also, I disagree with the idea that any great coach will come to Texas. What happened in the last vacancy? Charlie Strong was a safe bet but do you think he was their number 1 guy? The Texas job opening got other coaches raises like Jimbo Fisher, Nick Saban, Urban Mayer etc. Charlie Strong was a head coach from a smaller non P5 school and Mack was a successful coach in the ACC but at a basketball school that would never be a football first program. Neither guy was a high profile hire. UT would never hire him because of the scandal. That's a good point about Luck and Mack. Luck seems like a guy who gets there and wants to see if he can work with programs and improve them. It's insane that UT has still not hired an AD. I guess they want to be more cautious this time around. The Texas AD is going to have a big voice in the next round of realignment. You need someone with a vision.
A lot of rumors flying around the last few hours. Scout reporting that Fenves is "reluctant" or "unwilling" to consider Herman. Didn't say why. Now 247 reporting that Texas was all in on Herman but a big red flag popped up during the vetting process. Said not a deal breaker but pretty significant. Also something about John Harbaugh. No idea what to believe.
I never changed my mind. Also, cue all of the people saying this is no big deal, and Strong easily could have done the same thing.
I wasn't suggesting you did. What do you mean about people saying Strong could have done the same thing. Done what? Beat Louisville?
Yes, that's what's I'm reading on other sites - that Louisville is overrated and it has nothing to do with Herman, Orlando, etc
Steve Patterson is a POS and you can stick that in all 99 of your orifices. (insert joking smiley thing here) Unless they lose to Kansas or they get totally embarrassed by TCU he's still the coach next year.
It's about a drinking problem. OB also saying that Baylor is in play if Texas decides to not pursue Herman. "If the Longhorns do not hire Herman, multiple sources say he could turn his attention to the Baylor job, believing that the program is set up to win right now and is closer to being a top 10 than any other option that exists."
I don't see how Baylor is set up to win when their line play on both sides is going to the tank without good recruits.
I would take Herman over Strong and not think twice. I've not been in the Keep Strong camp for some time, certainly not when Herman is out there for the taking. Herman's UH is 5-0 as an underdog, beaten every ranked team it has faced, and is undefeated at home. I don't know what more can be said. Is Herman the absolute best coach out there? I don't know. Relative to Strong, he is definitely better.
I would still prefer to give Strong another year to improve. I think it's highly probable that the team does get better.
