I originally fell in love with OS X due to its integration with trackpad gestures. 8 years ago there was really nothing in the Windows sphere that was close to the multitouch gestures you could do on OS X (zoom, scrolling, menu shortcuts). I have not used a cutting edge Windows laptop in a while so I can't attest to how far Windows has caught up in that regard, but from what I can tell OS X is still ahead. It doesn't matter too much on a desktop machine where you have a keyboard and mouse but it adds tremendously to the usability of a laptop if it can have deep integration with trackpad gestures. If I see a word and want to know the definition, I can three finger tap on the word and the definition comes up right away, that's convenience. For multitasking, Expose is a necessity especially working on a smaller laptop screen. Outside of that, I think OS X still looks nicer than Windows 10, and apps appear to be better designed. I think the dock system is superior to the start menu in Windows. This might be a controversial opinion but I prefer that apps DON'T close when you hit the "x" button on OS X like it happens on Windows. Subjectively, it seems more stable and faster. Using OS X is just a more pleasurable experience than using Windows. I also use Windows all day at work so when I come home it's just nice to have a change of scenery.
I think Windows 10 has done a pretty good job of adding some features that were missing in Windows from Mac. I don't think it's more of what you're missing out on, but more so if you like the feel and general use of MacOS. I think the my favorite feature about a mac is the trackpad. I've tried out a lot of trackpads, and I still cannot find one that is nearly as great with the shortcuts that are available with the Mac trackpad. It makes browsing and multitasking much easier. The other thing that I've always liked about Mac is the fact that I've never really had many issues with it. The biggest issue I've probably had is the charging cable usually wears out over time so I've had to go through many of them over the past 7 years. But I've never had a serious issue with mine, and I think adding an SSD to this thing was probably the best decision I made a few years ago. It basically made it into a brand new PC.
honestly i'm just trying to find a reason to get one. i generally use my PC for browsing the net...used to game a little bit but even that has come to an end for the most part... just don't have the time. hence dropping 2 G's on a macbook pro hard to justify.
I made my decision today and ordered the new HP Spectre x360. After lots of research and thought, the Macbook was out of the question with it's price tag and what you are getting in return. It came down to the XPS13 and the HP Spectre, which I found to be the best two 13 inch options on the market. The Spectre has the new Kaby Lake Processor, just like the new XPS 13 i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD Hard Drive...for $1299...which is significantly cheaper than the XPS 13. Plus, as a comparison between the two, the Spectre performed better in graphics performance, graphics/gaming performance...has a higher Color Gamut, brighter display (Nits), higher Geekbench 4 score, higher overall performance (Geekbench 3), while still maintaining 10+ hours of use on one charge. And on top of all that, it has the ability to fold into a tablet. So basically, it came down to a better performing laptop, with the ability to become a tablet, at a significantly lower price point. If anyone is in the market for a new laptop, I'd look into what HP has to offer here. I think I spent a total of about 30-35 hours researching and even testing out products...so I think I'll hopefully be happy with the result. As a side note, not sure if other companies are offering the same thing...but I got a 3 year warranty through HP. If I never use it during the 3 years, I get a full refund of my money. Pretty nice.
I got my wife a 13in X360 earlier this week and she loves it. Sadly, the 15in has not been updated but when it is I'll likely get it.
The x360 looks great. I still think it's silly how Apple can release updates/refreshes at their own rate and get away w/ it. Touchbar... Apple will release a touchscreen in 2017/18 with Kaby Lake, just about the time everyone else moves on to a new platform.
No, the new model that just got released isnt the QHD OLED from the previous version. Weird that they downgraded the screen (although, it still looks decent since it's a 13 in. screen). Im assuming they wanted to ramp up the battery life a bit. So, stuck with just a FHD screen.
Up until the recent announcement of the new Macbook Pro, I had every intention of sticking with Apple. But, once I saw the price tag on what was being offered, I decided to not be so close minded and look at other options. There are plenty of great options...and it's sad that so many Apple die hards (I was one of them) are reluctant to see what else exists. The Surface Book, Lenovo Yoga 910, Dell XPS...the list goes on. All excellent devices. I really drove myself nuts trying to decide between all of these. There really is no right answer...and it just comes down to personal needs. If I had a larger budget, the Surface Book may have been the best option for me, but I just figured with my budget, and liking the idea of a 2 in 1, the Spectre gives me my best bang for the buck. In any case, Apple isnt doing what it should be doing.
Hey rezdawg Best Buy has the same laptop: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-spec...tate-drive-ash-silver/5228171.p?skuId=5228171 Right now for like $200-$300 cheaper. If you bought with a credit card it likely has some sort of price protection. I'd screenshot this and send it to your credit card company and see if you can get a few hundred dollars back.
Thanks for letting me know. I got the new version, so probably wont work for me...but that's a great deal for anyone that's looking for something. That model has the 6th generation i7, which would probably be fine for 99% of people.
This is an unbalanced system. Just saying. Your screen can only do 1920 by 1080, but your processor is specifically-made for 4k streaming. You would have done better getting a i5 core Skylake, as it is the best processor that supports 1080p. You don't need Kaby Lake processor. This is a waste of money.
These new MBPs are too expensive. And the battery life reportedly is awful which lead to Consumer Reports to issue a Do Not Recommend. I have been following the XPS a bit, but the coil whine sounds like it is awfully annoying. My wife likes her new HP Spectre X360 and has had no issues. I am going to hang on to my 2012 15" non-retina MBP until it actually dies, but I am hard pressed to say I will upgrade to the new MBP or switch to Windows 10/PC. CES is next week, and Dell will likely announce an updated XPS 15 but I bet the coil whine remains. Maybe the future really is mobile and I am not going to buy a new laptop at all. I have only turned on my home desktop several times over the last year.
