I get reducing the demand on Foreman but I don't know why you don't give all of backup snaps to Porter.
Part of me thinks the are just appeasing Swoopes. It felt forced last game and it seemed to throw the tempo off. Swoopes can't run sideways, so that last play he did failed. If this is what they want to do, why not have Jerod Heard do it?
So when Swoopes comes in the other team will automatically know we're running it up the gut. He has no outside technique at all and it's frustrating to even watch.
It was a good win, but I don't think it changes the calculus for Charlie much. There were still bone-headed coaching decisions throughout the game (see: Swoopes) and he could still very well get blown out by Tech and TCU, which would make this game a distant memory. I think the regents aren't going to let a coach like Herman get away just for the sake of giving Charlie another season.
If Charlie wins out, I think he'll get another year. From everything being circulated, Fenves really wants Charlie to succeed and think he'll use every excuse to keep him and not spend 18.5M buying our own contracts out. With that said, Tech/WV/TCU is gonna make Charlie work for it.
I think everyone wants Charlie to succeed but the university is not benefited by a bad football program. Fenves will do what he has to even if it means paying Charlie 7 million of the remaining 9 million on his contract to walk. The buyouts for the assistants might be another matter but I would be for Herman keeping Gilbert if Major take a head coaching job. Herman's buyout is only 2.5 million which isn't that bad. The giant factor here is that there is no Athletic Director. The fact that we have not even heard about interviews makes me think that they already know who they are going to hire. Maybe it's Oliver Luck who almost got the job 2 years ago and has experience getting new stadiums built. He'll have to work with the city to get money to co-finance the replacement for the Erwin Center. He's currently the executive vice president for regulatory affairs for the NCAA. I just don't see Perrin getting the job permanently due to his complete lack of experience in managing college athletics, television and just about everything else. He doesn't really ruffle any feathers because he doesn't have many bold stances. 2016 Freshman Year to Date QB Shane Buechele — 152 of 238 (63.87%, -.93% decrease since the previous game), 2013 yards, 17 TD’s, 6 INT (plus 1 rushing TD), 153.45 RTG — 16th nationally (+13 spots from previous week), 4th in B12 (+2) RB Kyle Porter — 33 car, 135 yds, 4.09 YPC, 2 TD WR Devin Duvernay — 11 rec, 275 yds, 3 TD WR Collin Johnson — 14 rec, 149 yds WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey — 2 rec, 15 yds C Zach Shackelford — starting center OL Jean Delance — reserve offensive lineman OL Denzel Okafor — reserve offensive lineman DE Malcolm Roach — 20 TT, 3 TFL, 2 sacks DT D’Andre Christmas — 2 TT, 1 fumble rec DT Gerald Wilbon — 1 TT DL Jordan Elliott — 6 TT, 1.5 TFL, 1 sack (currently injured) LB Jeffery McCulloch — 13 TT, 2 TFL, 1 sack S Brandon Jones — 10 TT, 2 blocked punts (got a piece of another), 1 safety, 2 PR for 33 yards, 2 KR for 44 total yards DB Donovan Duvernay — no stats recorded DE/OLB Erick Fowler — 1 TT, 1 TFL Here are the freshman that are on still eligible to redshirt. Charlie has over 11M left on his deal. The assistant buyouts add up for another 7.5M and don't think you can count on significant holdover with a new coach. But ya I'd be down for any new coach keeping Gilbert and Maddox. Here is the breakdown per Scout: Coach Remaining Balance Charlie Strong $11,133,333 Sterlin Gilbert $1,770,833 Matt Mattox $1,145,833 Clay Jennings $866,667 Vance Bedford $853,333 Brick Haley $638,750 Brian Jean-Mary $466,667 Charlie Williams $437,500 Pat Moorer $437,500 Jeff Traylor $408,333 Anthony Johnson $379,167 BUYOUT TOTAL $18,537,916 I agree that Fenves will do what is necessary (hopefully at least) but if Strong ends the season with a 5 game winning streak, a bowl win, and a 9-4 overall record, I think that is enough for Fenves. Of course everything gets shot to hell with a blowout to Tech or WV.
Everything that yall just did is exactly why football is intolerable. Poor D'Onta Foreman, he was a mere 2* recruit.
It's player development . Look at Alabama, they take the 5 star recruits and turn them into first round draft picks.
All starts in Lubbock this Saturday (obviously). But if we can pull one out on the road, we have both TCU and WV at home which we are undefeated. TCU is not a very good team and WV has at least shown it can be beat. Odds are long and Strong has his work cut out for him, but guess it's plausible which I didn't think it was just a week or 2 ago.
Part of that was the wretched referees having the need to review every other play rather than just do the damn job the first time.
In a very rare display of wit and talent, Kirk Bohls had the line of the week about that game: I'm pretty sure the refs went to the booth to confirm it was Saturday. About 6 too many.
That's the wildest play you'll see today. With the drop by Heard, the idiotically unnecessary chop block and the resulting defensive TD, that's 21 points we've gifted the Sand Aggies so far.
