Personnel is a huge part of it. Kubiak gets criticized but look at how much talent those teams had on both sides when Schaub imploded. It was Super Bowl caliber when everyone was healthy. We probably go the Super Bowl if not for the lisfranc injury. Neither Rick nor OBrien has any clue when it comes to building a roster.
They offered much less because they didn't think/know there'd be any competition - this was before free agency opened. Once the Texans got involved, Denver upped their offer significantly: And it's multiple articles from a variety of sources all confirming the 4/$64MM with $30+MM guaranteed offer. You sound like Trump... oblivious to facts and content to create your own narrative. Believe what you want.
There's ample fodder to dump on Brock so let's accurately recount what happened: the Texans were in it until Alfred Blue's fumble... that was the killer turnover Monday night: down five, Blue's run pushes inside Denver's 30, all but guaranteeing at least 3 points with our defense playing extremely well in the quarter. Denver promptly marches downfield and it's 21-9 by the time of Brock's fumble-pass.
Kubiak's great weakness was his inability to adapt or adjust during the course of the game, it was especially evident against teams over .500. The Houston offense under Kubes got a ton of yards on the ground, but so many drives left points on the board or 3 and outs. Kubiak's loyalty to a failing QB in Matt Schaub cost him his job here in Houston...It also hurt that there wasnt an option off the bench once Schaub's career nose dived. I have the utmost respect for Gary...who I believe is one of the most nicest individuals as a HC, and his players will go to war for him. NEVER questioned that...The Texans needed a different approach on offense... OBrien, inherited a NO QB situation and found a way to get the Texans into the playoffs 2 years in a row - Ryan Fitzpatrick in year 1; Hoyer/Mallett/Weeden and Yates in year 2. The Texans/FO/HCoach all believed that Brock would solve this problem...But I can guarantee they wont hesitate to make a different move much sooner if need be.
Yea...forgot about the killer TO by Blue that actually led to the TD; Brocks just added the FG. That being said, Brock had like 60-70 yds passing after 3 quarters...That is just unacceptable when you have A level/home run talent at the WR spots.
Actually you do. You keep saying multiple sources and there was a single article that said $30m+ guaranteed. The rest said much less
I blame myself for Blue's fumble. Literally seconds before he fumbled it, I said to myself "Blue is actually having a pretty good year this year."
Thought the DB made a heck of a play jarring the ball lose from Blue in that spot...by ramming the crown of his helmet into Blue's forearm.
True. I don't think anyone could've held onto the ball in that situation. Just one of those things, I suppose.
I feel like I can honestly say we have just as much talent on the roster this year as we did then. We just have no quarterback, and an offensive scheme that is not working, probably much of it to do with said lack of quarterback. And maybe one or two offensive lineman.
Oh, OK. I think you're confusing their initial offer prior to free agency opening. Everything I've read/seen says they offered him $30+MM guaranteed - and I've never heard Elway deny it.
Kubiak has gotten better after he left but he sucked while he was here. He had multiple 7-9, 8-8 seasons despite some good players especially on offense. The two seasons he broke through into the Playoffs coincided with Wade Phillips arrival. If Kubiak had stayed around here the Texans would be worse than they are right now. Now, if I could take a package deal that included Kubiak/Phillips, and JOHN ELWAY I would totally accept that. Only because of Elway though, he knows how to find talent.
The roster is not the problem. The coaching is not the problem. The problem is finding the roster that works with the coach's scheme. Or coaching players who don't necessarily fit the coaching scheme naturally. So they are both the problem.
I think Kubiak is the better coach but you just couldn't keep him around after we lost those 14 games in a row... It was his time to go
Elways draft talent eval is highly overrated.... He's the one that drafted Osweiller in ROUND TWO as the heir apparent to Peyton, and he was serious..... Out of the last 5 years of his GMing, he's had about 5 or 6 good picks out of like 40..all on defense, ironically. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/den/draft.htm His true impact is player recruitment, for sure...but drafting players? Not so much...
Exactly; this retroactive scramble by Elway to disavow Osweiler is pure bullshit and the media is falling for it. He recruited Peyton Manning... that's essentially his greatest accomplishment.
It's one thing to draft a dude in the second round and another to pay him $37 million guaranteed. The Broncos are also the same ones who benched him for a guy who couldn't throw past 5 yards.
