I want a real coach, not a CEO. Mack Brown at the end of his tenure was doing a terrible job of that anyway: our coordinators couldn't do their jobs, recruiting was a disaster, and it seemed like half the team had at least a short tenure in jail. No way in hell I want any of that back. Give Strong credit for fixing most of those issues. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to put it all together.
Rival coach: Charlie Strong is not the answer at Texas http://texas.247sports.com/Article/...s-not-the-answer-for-the-Texas-Longh-48469357 These are all valid points.
Knowing what we know now, another year of Mack wouldn't have been that bad considering it would have at least put us in the Harbaugh sweepstakes. He still would've been a long shot but who knows. But as far as Les goes (and really any other candidate without experience in running or defending the spread), I'd just be worried we'd see the same struggles we are experiencing with Strong. Personally, I cannot stand the type of football the conference is playing but it is what it is. For Herman, there really isn't much more he can prove being in the AAC. Win a bunch of games, win a conference championship, win your bowl game, and beat up on a P5 opponent when given a chance. He has experience running really high powered offenses and bringing in Major/Orlando have proven to be really good hires. The 2 recent losses have been bad though.
I think it's legitimacy possible that UT doesn't win again this season. Texas Tech and Baylor are both in the top 5 in offensive yards. West Virginia is #10. TCU is #15. Kansas has an awful offense but so did Kansas St. At least Texas Tech also has a bad defense. I certainly did not blast you for that. I was against firing him but I eventually came around and thought it was for the best given the attitude of the fans and boosters. I have always been an avid Mack supporter for a huge number of reasons. I'll always be incredibly grateful that he gave me 2 amazing seasons with the national championship and an amazing run in 08 which almost led to a national championship appearance. There was 0 chance Texas was going to get Saban. There were literally 0 rumors/reports from any media aside from 1 supposed booster who talked to a representative of Saban. Texas fans need to understand that this is not a must have position. You don't need to go to Notre Dame or Texas to be on national TV and have national attention anymore. Getting Tom Herman would mark the 3rd straight hire from a non-p5 or non football school in North Carolina when we got Mack Brown. This is a pretty lame "report." Not even a hint of who is reporting their anonymous source. It's worth noting that there is 0 chance Herman can bring Major Applewhite to Texas. The misconduct issue with him is still in the system in some way. I didn't really follow the particulars when I heard that on the radio this morning. He and a student trainer hooked up while the team was away at a bowl game. It was consensual and technically not against the rules but it's obviously in bad taste. In no way is this similar to the Baylor situation however it's possible officials might be sensitive to any controversies concerning sex. I'm not sure how old the student trainer was.
There are 9 coaches with teams in the top 25 that took over less than 3 years ago....Strong sucks, this job is too big for him. DD
Not arguing it's validity but how often do these rumors, true or not, cite anything more than "reliable or sources close to the situation?" As for Major, did you just hear about this? 0 percent is a pretty strong prediction for just hearing something for the first time. Yes he had improper relations with a student trainer but IIRC, no details were released nor did the woman file anything against him or the university. Not justifying what he did by any means and I'm sure they'd rather not bring him back but 0 percent means they'd say no to Herman as well if he wanted to bring him along. Not sure that is necessarily the case.
What is the reasons Charlie Strong is still employed by Texas? Seems to be very little benefit to waiting this out to let go of him after the season...
Not much benefit in letting him go now either really. Just more negative publicity against UT to drag out longer, more time for candidates to get asked about the job and get pissed, etc... Guess it would get you a head start on the search but no official contact is going to happen during the season. Any back channel dealings would be on the downlow regardless too.
The benefit I see is as follows: 1. Performance to close out the season doesn't really matter. Lose out, its blamed on the situation. Do better than expected and that's only a good thing. 2. Make it known that you are on the search. Not sure how its bad to start kicking those tires more officially... even if still "unofficial". 3. More time to sort out next year's recruiting class. Plenty of time if he's let go immediately following the season, too, but another area where it seems sooner would be better. For players that want to decommit, it can be gotten out of the way sooner rather than later. 4. Message sent to fanbase, players, etc. Strong's tenure has been a disaster and this year is a disaster. People get fired for doing disastrously at their job. 5. On the contrary, given #4 above, I'm not sure its so much negative publicity. In fact, its probably better publicity than the constant questioning over his job and tenure that will happen the rest of the season. Instead its the publicity of whose potential HC options at Texas, which is still a "top" coaching job, yada, yada... Just some thoughts...
Ya those could work too. Only one I disagree with is #2. It's much easier to try and keep a class together rather than starting one from scratch, which would inevitably happen if Strong were to be fired before the end of the season. Some will decommit regardless but flipping kids back if they were to commit elsewhere (which some would likely do if the decomitted now) would be extremely difficult. But timing is key in all of that.
Baylor is hardly great. UT should be able to beat them, they have the talent on defense, it's just a mess right now for whatever reason. Eyeball test-wise, this Baylor team is the worst I've seen in 3-4 years. I think the general public assumes Baylor is being punished in the rankings due to the rape scandal (which is true) - and that they're a great team.... but.... they aren't that great.
Sad that the UT program has fallen to these depths. It's time to get a proven winning HC like a Petrino/Briles. This is why I'm not all gung ho on getting Herman.
