Time to root even harder for Netflix, Amazon, Twitter, YouTube and anyone else trying to disrupt traditional content distrtibution. I hope Netflix isn't swallowed up by one of the major media companies.

I kind of cried a bit when I heard about this merger on Friday because, as I was telling a friend, I had been planning on switching from UVerse to Time Warner cable to lower the costs a bit and not be so reliant on AT&T. I may switch to DirecTV, I guess, but I'll still be in the AT&T world.

As for the others, the latest rumor is that Netflix will eventually be taken over by somebody. As for Twitter, nobody apparently wants them, but they've been trying to sell themselves for a while.

Time warner cable doesn't exist anymore. It was bought by spectrum. The deal between at&t and time warner does not include TWC. If it did the DoJ would block it.

As for the talk about Apple and Google disrupting traditional content distribution.. why can they try something new and at&t won't? DirecTV Now comes out very soon.

Ah, ok. I forgot about Spectrum. Nevermind, then.

Only problem with Directv Now is that you'll apparently be limited to only 2 streams. Can't do that in my house.

Have you seen this somewhere, or are you just speculating? I don't think any of the new players will make the same mistakes that Sling did.

ask the question "If the Internet allows anyone to publish their content online, why do these giant media companies still exist?"

there is only one reason: payment processing

DirecTV now has a real chance to be pretty sweet with this new merger.

This article highlights a lot of it.
AT&T’s new streaming service, DirecTV Now, just got a lot more interesting

At&the has more fiber laid than anyone (more than Google fiber) and they offer to more homes. Why would they do this if they wanted to prevent cord cutting? Why are they offering direcTV Now if they want to stop cord cutting? At&the greatly benefits from cord cutting as they are an Internet provider too.

Limiting the number of streams to one or two per household just won't work for most families and makes it an automatic none starter. People pay for internet regardless of whether or not they pay for TV. So everytime a DIRECTV or Uverse customer cuts the cord, ATT loses.

This has nothing to do with Time Warner Cable. They were bought by Charter, and as a condition of it's merger with TWC they agreed to no data caps for like 7 years or something like that.
