I'm not buying it. The B1G just signed the most lucrative conference TV deal ever, and now Nebraska wants out?

Ya timing seems weird but as a brand, I think Nebraska has taken a hit somewhat since their move. Also, with the $1 billion/$500 million increase for expansion, I wonder how much they'd be leaving on the table if they came back.

Top of the heap? No. Not even close.

    But, it would help.

He used to be radio host in Utah and now has a podcast or something. He has BYU sources but they are usually not that accurate.

Barry Switzer says 'Hell no' to University of Houston joining the Big 12

Another football coach with Oklahoma ties wants nothing to do with the University of Houston joining the Big 12.

Former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer, who led the Sooners to three national championships during his 1973-88 run in Norman, said "it'd be a hell of a mistake" to let the Cougars into the Big 12 if the conference decides to expand, citing recruiting concerns.

Switzer made his remarks during a podcast with Austin American-Statesman columnists Kirk Bohls and Cedric Golden that was posted Thursday.

In defending current Sooners coach Bob Stoops' 2-2 record entering Saturday's game against Texas, Switzer brought up the Cougars, who defeated Oklahoma 33-23 in the Sept. 3 season opener at NRG Stadium.

"(Stoops) lost to two teams - hell, Houston beats everybody," Switzer said. "They were 13-1 last year, weren't they? It'd be a hell of a mistake if the Big 12 allows them to come in. They've got better players in Harris County than anywhere else in the United States.

"You give them credibility like you did TCU (and) let them out of that Mountain something West league and give them credibility, they'll be recruiting the same players (that) Texas, Oklahoma and everybody else is recruiting. And they'll get them, too. Right now, they don't get the same players. But they still get enough good ones."

Bohls followed up with Switzer and asked if he thought it would be a mistake to let UH join the Big 12.

"In my personal opinion, I wouldn't let them in, but I'm not involved anymore," Switzer said. "It would make it tougher on Oklahoma, no doubt. I don't know how they'll vote.

"Me, if I had a chance to vote on them? Hell no. I think it was a mistake to let TCU in and they proved it was a mistake."

Switzer sounded especially concerned about a recruiting advantage the Cougars would have in their backyard.

"I always said if I could get the top 30 players coming out of Houston every year, I'd play for the national championship every year," Switzer said.

In August, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said he was against Big 12 expansion, citing the competition for recruits in Texas that would intensify if UH joined the league.

Although, I love the bootlegger's boy (as a college recruiter/coach)....listening to all this FEAR from him and everyone else smacks of a sense of entitlement that would attempt to preclude any competitive balance. It's not business as usual anymore. One way (Big 12) or another (ACC or SEC) UH is at the dining table for good now. We didn't have the president, athletic department, facilities, boosters, and political influence aligned before. Houston is the definition of a sprawling metropolis, a major seat of power....and we finally have our **** together....certainly well enough to write our own ticket.

It's very refreshing to hear somebody from the Big 12 camp finally give an honest answer to the "why not" question instead of this other splitting-hairs-nonsense we've been hearing.

The only way to decide it should be on the football field. If UT wins then Big12 expands if OU wins then Big12 implodes.

Agreed. I appreciate his candor, but it's all those years of slurping at our trough by whatever means necessary...they all feel our oil patch is theirs to control...when in fact they are losing it.

It's always been pretty clear that fear of losing out on recruits and making their schedule harder were always the reasons people would be against adding UH, I agree that it's refreshing to hear someone admit it.

Honest? Sure. But he also makes Oklahoma look pretty weak. Might as well not even refer to the Big 12 as a "Power 5" if they're not interested in bettering a conference that is currently looking rough.

That's basically what I've been saying ever since UH's nuts grew to the size of a house.

With some minor caveats, the point of expansion should be to make your conference the most competitive it can be.

Everything else will fall into place after that.

Yes it should be, but we know it's not about that at all really.
