I have no idea what Herman's future looks like (nor does anyone else). What would be AWESOME is if/when Strong is let go, and UT and their (we can get whoever we want smugness comes knocking on TH door), and Herman TURNS THEM DOWN!!!!! UT just went through this a couple of years ago, and the best they could come up with is Charlie Strong? It's funny to watch the Whorns meltdown. These comments crying about how decimated the program was when Strong showed up. Yes a roster with COUNTLESS 4 & 5 star recruits. Decimated? GIVE ME A FREAKIN BREAK!! With all their resources, and being right in the middle of THE biggest hotbed for recruits in the country, and UT has won ONE National championship in FORTY-SIX FREAKIN YEARS.
For those who follow this stuff closely, why did Gary Patterson decide to stick it out with TCU? I mean, he's been with them since the C-USA days and built the program up into BCS-buster status yet he only makes $4.75m/yr. Why didn't he bolt for A&M, UT or some other blue blood?
I don't doubt that Herman would have been "down the road" with anybody last year, but the idea that he pulled out because of one game (a loss to Citadel) is really hard to swallow. You don't make such a huge decision on what amounts to a fart in the wind. I mean damn, he took over a program here that lost to UTSA in its biggest home opener in decades and lost to Tulane on homecoming. I'm guessing that things between Herman and his suitor cooled off around that time and people just mistakenly think the two are linked. Herman used his flirting and eventual success to parlay that into an enormous payday with UH. Also, the idea that his contract has a specific stipulation about leaving for UT is equally hard to buy. Contracts are public information. That would have come up from a FOIA request by an actual news organization by now if it were true. I believe Herman will go to UT if offered, but some of this stuff is just silly.
He makes 3.9MM and that puts him in the top 20. Fun to note that UH has written into Tom's contract a 5MM salary (that puts him in the top 10) if UH gets to the P5.
Soooo much feear ...Fear of Louisville! Please! Fear of being "left out" of the "Big 12" Fear of losing Tom Herman....c'mon. UH is back, finally. I've waited many years for a team that could trade punches with anybody...year to year. I remember our SWC teams from the seventies well. The time has come to play with the big boys wherever on a consistent basis...whether it's in the Big 12 or points East....We sit on the most fertile recruiting soil in the world..That's what it was always about..the reason we were kept out of the big 12.Things are different now as the powers that be/stars have finally aligned. Herman at UH is the nightmare for everyone else, long overdue for so many of us....It's a pretty damn good situation here for him. Eat em up!
I thought the 5m was a one time bonus. That's still a lot of money but maybe he wants prestige. I think he can get paid at UH, get nice facilities, and win. But that AAC schedule will keep him from getting a championship.
I think it is a one time bonus, but paid out over two years. A wild guess, but probably has to be UH employed to collect. Though that has to be small potatos compared to what he will be offered.
He just signed a contract extension until 2022 and got a nice salary bump. Regardless, his previous salary only reinforces my question about why didn't he bolt for greener pastures
Honestly I don't think it does. The top guys make what, 6-7 million? If you're making 4 million, more money than you could reasonably spend or ever need, how is 6 million going to make you wet your pants? At a certain point I think money just becomes irrelevant for most unless they are simply out for the title of highest paid coach. Being at a place where you have adequate resources and support, as well as the infrastructure and foundational work already completed, plus a ton of credibility and sway... Job hopping loses its appeal. There's other factors of course. Assistant salaries. Literal satisfaction with your home city. Working relationship with the administration. Etc. Herman is early in his career, so big dollar signs are more tempting for sure, but you have to wonder when does security and quality of life outweigh money.
He wasn't close to going to South Carolina. He did explore the USC job though and has connections in California. Herman will be the most in demand coaching commodity on the market, in a field full of very wealthy high powered employers available. So the possibility of him leaving for a godfather offer/opportunity is genuine. He won't be the only coach making a move though.... Mich St., Wisconsin, Louisville and a couple others could see their head coach leave for openings at ND, USC, UT, LSU and possibly AU and FSU and UNC.
Naw, winning for him at UH won't be bigger than winning at LSU (state's flagship school) or UT (arguably the biggest brand in college athletics).
Building a program from the ground floor and winning a schools first football championship would be bigger than winning at schools with championships over the last 10-15 years. Ultimately I think it comes down to whether or not he believes he realistically can compete at the highest level at UH. He has a level of control at UH that he won't likely have elsewhere. He has a close and strong relationship with the administration at UH. He has little outside meddling from boosters other than a handful of wealthy doners he gets a long with. He also likes the city..... so the decision comes down to whether or not he believes he can win at UH. The only time that Herman has expressed anger with UH ... was over a game not selling out... he didn't complain about the shitty conference or BCS or prior practice facilities or stadium.... but did one time about the fan support. It will be interesting to see what happens. If Herman leaves it is no guarantee it is to UT or LSU.... the USC job was one he seriously considered.
I'll just remind folks that while Herman is the new hotness, Les Miles has a natty under his belt, can recruit and can compete, thus is definitely more attractive. I'd imagine the going rate will be similar for both
They were saying 10m today. This is a Nolan Ryan moment. He's going to break the bank because the hype is unreal and the market is competitive. What I would say is that Herman could bolt if he wanted, and if he fails, he could still come back to UH. He really has nothing to lose when it comes to control and support, because he can get that on the rebound if he wants. And even if it's only a 2m raise, that's still 40% right. Not chump change. And certainly more valuable than quality of life and control. Think quality of life could trump a 10-20% raise, but not 40% or more.
Just to make sure we're all on the same page as to the facts, this is not actually written into his contract. It's just a verbal promise made to Herman. I'm sure UH would honor this promise anyway, but just to be clear as to the facts. http://www.cbssports.com/college-fo...llion-reasons-to-get-houston-into-the-big-12/
Don. First, you can't compare him coming here to where he's going to next. Two completely dramatically different jumping off points. Secondly I didn't say that he jumped ship because they lost to Citadel but that was the straw that broke the camels back. The negotiations were happening in the middle of the season before us or probably Herman knew that last year would end in a peach bowl victory. Seeing Citadel beat SC showed what state SC was in and that while it was big money big program it was in a terrible state and a losing culture. Also U.h. Proved to be the better place for him at that point.
What he should do is take a slight bump in salary from UH and then again disperse the rest to his assistants. Give Orlando another half mil. Those guys are doing a good job and, looking at what happened with Strong and Miles, will help you keep your job. He could be Daryl Royal/Bear Bryant at UH. Apologies to Bill Yeoman.
I thought he'd say the same thing when UH played Temple for the Championship. There were over 2,000 unsold tickets. My guess is he kept his mouth shut because he didn't want to take away from the moment. Then the fans did travel well to the Peach Bowl. With games against Tulsa, UCF, & Tulane left on the home schedule (Louisville already sold out), Fans need to by some tickets. The fan support is still growing. I'd like to think if UH is 12-0 going into the Championship this time tickets will be long gone before game day. I personally am taking some boys to the Tulsa game that normally won't get to go any games. If it works out I plan to take them back to UCF and Tulane. Tickets aren't crazy in price and you'll be creating a future Coog fan.
Sorry but no way Orlando stays for another 500k. Orlando is getting a promotion at the end of the season. He'll be a head coach with $2 million on his check. For that matter Applewhite is going to get some calls too. In a dream world they all stay and UH gets into a P5, but the truth is keeping Herman is the main goal and let him search for his new staff. That's a big enough task.
