We were longshots to get him from the start, but the fact that high profile recruits with no Texas/Houston even have us on their shortlist is pretty awesome.
http://www.campusrush.com/charlie-strong-texas-future-hot-seat-coaching-carousel-2028550332.html Losing 3 of our best coaches in 10 years to rival in state programs would pretty much rank up there with the worst dick punches in history. Has that happened to any school, ever?
I totally agree that Strong is done (this season) regardless of what happens. Folks will be even more vocal after Oklahoma wins the red river shootout. Also, i can totally see the Notre Dame and USC jobs opening up. I'm sorry, but this is the perfect storm. Herman can't get a better combination of favorable factors when it comes to his future. I've already started preparing myself mentally for a future with Orlando in the Big12. It really isn't a bad consolation prize when you consider what Briles and Sumlin left us with. Playoffs this year year would be pretty great too
Yeah, it isn't looking good with the number of big openings. Enjoy the ride..no need to fret over what you can't control as a program.
Except like in all Houston sports stories it will generally be the darkest timeline. No Big 12 expansion, Orlando heads to Texas, and Houston hires Tony Levine, Dana Dimel, or Kim Helton.
Regardless of what happens after the season, Herman isn't going to let you down this season like that a**hole Sumlin did with the Southern Miss game. I would argue UH is now an attractive program and can draw a top head coach. Just don't hire a Levine again.
"Texas trades in its dignity with shameless signal to Tom Herman" Tommy is probably gone. "Irresponsible journalism" blahblahblah ... If he was close to taking the dumpster that was South Carolina...he's definitely gonna strike it rich this December. Though Herman will certainly protest the increased speculation about his future, preferring to keep the focus on Houston’s long-shot push toward the College Football Playoff, the reality is activity is already underway behind the scenes in the coaching search industry. Even last year, Herman’s representatives were well down the road with South Carolina before he pulled back in November and ultimately decided to stay at Houston and wait for a better opportunity.
Does the reporter have anything against Texas? Initially I didn't think anything of the comments from the AD but after reading that it does sound bad. They should cut Strong right after the game if they get blown out by OU. I wonder how bad it is for coaches when they need to deal with big boosters. I'm thinking Herman has it easy at UH with the boosters, especially the billion dollar buyer, hope he gets along with the Texas ones if he jumps ship.
That's the only knock against being UT's head coach. If Herman is comfortable with the boosters and LHN taking up his time, he'll be alright as long as he's winning. I feel bad for UH. It's such a stepping stone to the bigger power conferences. Renu Khator is doing great things, though, and UH will likely be in a major conference by 5 years, 10 for sure.
Just talked with a coworker here in Plano (her son plays for Herman/UH right now) and she said her son hasn't heard anything internally. She's a bit bummed out about what could transpire with Herman bolting for UT as she told me he was really genuine during the annual parent meeting at the beginning of the season with the coaching staff and how Herman always mentioning wanting to build a legacy at UH. We'll see how this plays out. I wouldn't be mad at Herman for leaving if UH goes undefeated this season and manages to get into the playoffs.
That's why I think there's a good chance he stays at UH, he's really building that program into something special and if he manages to do so it'll be bigger for him than going to UT or LSU could even potentially be. Also, at UH he doesn't have the same types of problems dealing with boosters and the other BS that goes along with taking jobs at those "more prestigious" schools. He's got a pretty good thing going right now, hard to know if he'll throw that away or not.
#TexasTakeover with Willie Nelson and Townes Van Zandt probably doesn't sound as appealing to recruits as Drake and Swisha House but Tom might be able to make it work.
There's something to be said for the fact that he has total alignment with the athletic program, university president, board of regents, and boosters. Herman says we need a new locker room, practice facility, etc... and it gets done/approved a year later. But (obv) Texas is one of the top couple jobs in the country and the get-what-I-ask-for situation is moot because they already have everything he would want. I expect that he would chose the marquee job, as most would in his situation. But I'm still going to hope I'm wrong and he's the rare type that will value what he's building and loyalty over the obvious choice.
Lol. He didn't have a contract agreement with South Carolina that fell through because of a loss to Citadel. Where do people come up with this stuff? I thought NBA free agency was bad but this is even worse. Does anyone know if the Texas AD has been spotted looking for Herman in downtown Houston yet?
Yeah that South Carolina agreement story is one made up by "reporters" in South Carolina. I've heard it and don't buy it for one second.
Like I said, I guess you can only take what I'm saying with a grain of salt, but the dude I heard it from made me believe it. It's a name that most Cougar fans know. I still have optimism, I'm not going to let what can potentially go wrong sour what's going oh-so-right this season.
What would be ultimately hilarious would be if UH lost Herman to UT but hired Strong and paid Applewhite/Orlando to stay on as highly paid coordinators. Applewhite: 1.5 mill Orlando: 1.8 mill Strong: 2.5 mill
Saw this from Joseph Duarte today... I dont know... maybe this will be like a Les Miles situation where Texas beats OU and gets carried off by his players forcing the UT administration to hang on to him.
