IMO this is overdue, Godsey simply wasn't getting it done so until he can improve, BOB had to take over.
To his credit, I don't think Bill wanted to name an OC for this reason, I feel like when he was calling plays for Fitzy the team was playing better. This should be an improvement
I also think this is an effort to not have to fire him. He hasn't done a good job, but firing your OC would be a bigger story than simply taking over play calling duties.
Didn't some of us here wonder why he stopped calling the plays in the first place? I know I kept asking the question years ago with out much of an explanation. When BOB was calling the plays the Texans were 14th in offense with Fitz (not great). When Godsey took over they went down to 21st with Hoyer and the QB carousel, and now last.
Because it's how things were done in New England. BOB was calling the plays for the Pats as the QB coach, so BOB wanted to run his ship the same way....only he picked someone incapable of calling plays.
Calling plays comes at a cost. O'Brien wanted the CEO approach. Didn't work out. I actually liked that he was aiming for that. Oh well.
Ok. Well if Godsey was the culprit behind this team's offensive woes, hopefully we'll see a drastic change starting this week. I will say I liked the play calling a lot more when Fitz was QB, so maybe we'll see more of that. This team has WAY more weapons now than it did 2 years ago.
What do you think the benefit of being an overseer (CEO) of the team is? Do you really lose that much as a coach when you're calling offensive or defensive plays? The only thing I can think of is plausible deniability is lost.
Nah, I think it does take a toll. You're busy scripting plays, thinking X's and O's and less about managing players, practices, etc... his day-to-day is going to change in a significant way.
We saw this with Kubiak, an undue loyalty to some of his guys. With the turnover at OL coach due to underperformance it looked like BOB might actually hold his personne accountable. But with Godsey it's like he has this father son complex, a la Doc and Austin Rivers. He wants Godsey to succeed so much, yet it's plainly obvious that Godsey is going wide-eyed and choking come game time. If we make a big improvement vs Tennessee it'll be even more apparent. Let's hope BOB has it in him to make the right choice, to put team ahead of friendship, and to get someone capable and autonomous to run a good offense for us soon. Because I like BOB and don't wanna see him get run out of town.
Well the duties of the oc aren't limited to calling plays, firing him leaves the staff without a qb coach
