82games track all the standard +/- stuff, but also breaks it down to +/- compared to opposing player in same position. Beasley is like our second best player by far when you track position-based +/-. I'm not a big fan of any individual +/- stat especially for <20mpg role players, so my only takeaway from this is it should at least tell ppl to question the usefulness of talking about Beasleys General on/off +/- stats, which is -9 or something -- when his position based one is like +11
That assumes that his lack of defense is only allowing the other PF to score, that's why it's flawed. The point is that when Beasley was on the court last year, the other team scored more than the Rockets did.....nearly every time he stepped foot on the court. Sure, maybe that's just a coincidence, but if you really watched him play, you'd realize it's not. Hell there was one game against the Bulls that the Rockets lost almost entirely due to Beasley being on the court. Replace him with literally anyone else other than Jones and the Rockets win that game. I know that offense is exciting to watch and that's why some fans will believe that Beasley was awesome, but a deeper look shows that he was really bad.
He was bad on a terrible defensive team in which almost nobody bothered to play team defense. Beasley's never been a very good defender, but the right system could minimize his problems, and he might be an offensive beast in MDA's system. Then again, he might completely suck on defense in any system. We'll find out this year. <BR>
Stats do not always tell the truth. The one thing I can tell you is we were winning tons of games, so I can't go on just his +\-. Dude came in and scored and actually tried. He is a legit scorer and with D'Antoni and his strong defensive mind....he will fit right in.
Sorry Bobbythegreat, both stats are flawed. Your just picking the one that aligns with your opinion. I respect that opinion more than the individual +/- stats. It's true that the overall +/- says the Rockets suck when he played. But can we say the position-based +11 for Beasley can be thrown away by saying everything negative was his fault. There are other things to look at regarding why we sucked yet the opposing PF didnt come anywhere close to out scoring him, but in fact scored the same for any 5 man rockets rotation. It certainly says opps didn't isolate and attack him with their PF -- Was Ariza switching? -- Did the transition D implode from Beasley being main scorer. -- Did our offense besides Beasley suck really bad when he was on the court? -- Can we really say Thornton, Terry and Lawson were better defenders just because their +/- is better? I prefer you stick to saying you think he's a horrible defender and why, and do so without relying on flawed stats.
How can you forget about Beasley and be a rockets fan?? I understand if you said Terrence Jones maybe even KJ McDaniels but Beasley? He had a steady minutes and was a bright spot last year.
I have not forgotten about him. If he got his head screwed on straight and this being a contract year for him (isn't it?) he could be bringing it and with bdzelik or however spelled could end up making him a viable defensive guy. Course he could still be a head case but I'm hoping that he can create his own shot when harden is on the bench and learn to pass off for open shots.
I don't blame him, especially since Terrence is still a Houston Rocket according to his twitter profile. https://twitter.com/TerrenceJones1?lang=en
Replace him with who? We had Harrell, Dmo, and Smith who all played legit PF (did not include Jones). Dmo was still getting his health back and definitely wasn't the same coming back from injury. Harrell does not bring a big defensive presence and Smith is still worth putting in because he held his own at times but offensively he's dropped a lot since his Atlanta days. Slide over Ariza/Brewer and we're doomed to be taken advantage of in the paint, then you had Clint who is athletic enough to guard more than just the center position but give the other teams another target for the free throw line game. Beasley was forever known as a pretty good offensive player who lacks discipline on the defensive end. If he could play marginal defense he would have gotten a multiyear deal already with another team. By joining the team again next year he's playing to his strengths. Anyone who expects the Rockets team to play a hell of a lot better on defense needs to share what they're smoking because this team is going to focus primarily on better offensive plays. Now we have Anderson at PF, hopefully we don't need to keep Anderson out there for the full 33-36 minutes. If we can split up his minutes between some solid PF's (Beasley is definitely one of them) we might finally have that position figured out.
Nope. Not me. Beasley gonna be a problem for the NBA next year. MDA designed wide open mid range gimmies all day son.
