UT fans should hope OU beats Ohio St. You want OU to be ranked as high as possible so it helps if you can beat them and Ohio St is going to be a very attractive team that would compete with UT for a top 4 playoff spot. I'm not saying Texas going to the playoffs. I mean that a OU win and Ohio St loss would increase the likelihood UT can get in if they can win the conference.
This is an interesting issue with UH potentially taking a spot. Let's say we have: Undefeated UH 1-loss Texas 1-loss Ohio State 1-loss Alabama 1-loss Stanford 1-loss Florida State And lets say all looked similarly impressive. Who makes a playoff?
I would think from that group, Alabama, Florida St, Ohio St and Houston would make it. Though, it wouldn't shock me if they kept UH out even if they were undefeated due to that schedule. If Louisville keeps it up, that would be another potential marquee win for UH. Having two top 10 ranked wins would be huge for them in making the playoff. Outside of Stanford and Washington, the Pac 12 looks pretty weak at the moment. Same goes for the Big 12 outside of OU, Texas and potentially Baylor. Still very early though. Things will obviously shift by the time the season ends. Strength of schedule will obviously play a big part. The other thing that would hurt Texas is that the Big 12 doesn't have a championship game, so that's one extra game that those other schools would potentially have over Texas.
It's so tough to say without any conference games played. UH has a ton of love right now but their wins are going to get less and less impressive and it'll be more so if OU struggles. The big 12 is getting off to an awful start so I don't think that bodes well for Texas. This year might really hammer home the need for a 6-8 team playoff. It doesn't make sense for a team to win their conference and not have a chance to play for the national championship. The depth chart for the cal game was released. All of the starters that took the UTEP game off are back in. I imagine Malcolm Roach will get more playing time even though he's listed as 3rd string. It'll be interesting if Kyle Porter still gets some touches. It's looking like the Baylor offensive lineman will red shirt this year as well as LB Eric Fowler which isn't much of a surprise. We'll see. <spoiler> </spoiler>
The starters are back for this game. My pick for player of the game will be D'Onta Foreman. I think he'll go for 200 yards rushing
Why would we need to expand the playoffs?? Were the 4 teams last year just so competitive and close with each other that there must have been more teams out there who should have had a shot at the championship? No. OU had no right to contend for the Championship last year. The season still mattes in CFB. I don't want a duplication of the 9-7 Giants getting hot during the tournament and winning it all. NFL fans need to quit trying to move in on college football.
I think that if an undefeated UH is left out of the playoff, the field needs to be expanded. The entire argument for having the playoff was that undefeated teams, or those with just as strong an argument (ie Texas in the Texas/Texas Tech/OU debacle), get a chance to make a play for the title. If an undefeated UH isn't given a shot, what's the point of a playoff?
Forget this. If UT wins out, they get in. I have wasted too much effort cheering for OU in the hopes of making the conference look good. OU came through once - against Alabama in 2013, I believe. The rest of the times....... - Blowout loss to Manziel's Aggies - Embarrassing BCS bowl loss to Boise State - Embarrassing BCS bowl loss to West Virginia - Blowout National Championship loss to USC - Choke National Championship loss to LSU - National Championship loss to Florida (scored 50 for a string of games, but couldn't score like 20 in the big game) - 2 blowout bowl losses to Clemson I think there were more, but those are some highlights from the top of my head. I am sick of rooting for OU or other schools I hate in the hopes that their wins somehow make my team look better. If UT just focuses on thrashing their rival Big 12 teams, we shouldn't have to stoop to rooting for our rival clowns. Been there, done that.
If UH is undefeated, they should have one of the 4 spots. People always make way too big of a production about the "tragedy" of a one-loss team not getting their shot at the Championship. OU only got into the Final Four, because there was nobody deserving. OU certainly had not earned it. In regards to UH as an unstoppable force, I'll say it - I don't think they were tested with OU. OU never should have been a Top 5 team. I don't think they are a Top 20. If they do end up in the Top 20, it's only because the Big 12 is so weak. That UH-OU game was weird. Looking at UH's defense in the first quarter, a good team would carve them up and not take their foot off the gas. IMO, UT has already played their toughest opponent this year. Nevertheless, the odds are they will have a couple letdowns where they don't play to their potential, because they are so young.
you sure about that? i didn't watch much of the UTEP game but he made some beautiful throws against ND that definitely weren't "floated and dangerous of being picked off"... in fact i recall a few throws that he placed precisely where the opponent had no chance of intercepting.
I think the bigger issue is if UT wins the conference but loses a game along the way. Then it's a beauty contest and having "big wins" helps.
If we're the fifth team that gets left out, is that really a tragedy? This team will be better in '17 & '18 for sure. I'd rather this team finish on a high note and have a chip on their shoulder than get beat in the first round of the CFP. Two games ago I was hoping we'd go 8-4, I'm not worried about the difference between 1 loss and none.
Not when they're not able to report until 2 weeks or so before the regular season. Think he's a good RS candidate.
If there are a bunch of 1 loss teams, then it's a beauty pageant. OSU was the #4 seed the year they won the title. TCU could easily have won that year - if only they were in. You always want to be in and have a shot than have no shot at all. Who knows what happens in a future year - it's easy to say the team will be better, but you never really know.
Depends on who the 1 loss teams lost to? What if OSU has 1 close loss to an undefeated Michigan, for example?
