I recommend the Trick It thread on Flyertalk, but it will take you some time to get the hang of it.

Anybody got any tips on getting cheap hotels/rental cars?

Only thing I've been able to deduce is that booking ahead of time (except for Holidays) typically costs you more.

Last minute bookings are dirt cheap.

    That thread is astounding.

    So much codespeak.

I'm shocked they have been able to keep their workaround underwraps for almost a decade on the internet. That's truly remarkable.

Should I assume these deals will not be open during the Thanksgiving week? Really looking for a help here, trying to find the cheapest option to go from NYC to either HOU or LA. Been scanning for a bit already. So much appreciation for anything that can be found.

The whole thing boils down to how airlines price flights. Airline pricing is still operating on a model from the 1980s. You'd be surprised how antiquated the entire industry is when it comes to pricing and distribution. It leaves a lot of holes that can be exploited.

Not if you have access to flight inventory. Then you can more or less pick out which flight you're guaranteed to get on.

And if you work for an airline, hopefully you know someone at work who can look that stuff up for you (if you don't have access yourself)

Sure, you can fly on a Tues/Wed/Thursday and come back on a Tues/Wed/Thurs. Can't do the normal "leave on Friday and come back on Sunday" unless you want to spend hours and hours at an airport waiting to hear your name to be called. Been there, done that many times.

Since the 2008 crash, SWA changed the airline game by providing low fares even during the tough times. People took advantage of it and the other airlines have to match up in order to stay competitive. With that, airline employees lose to fly standby. Knowing about flight inventory doesn't help.

Booked 5 people including luggage from Houston to Philly non-stop for $340 which includes luggage. That's $68/ticket.

This! You can look up to see what flights are open. I fly all the time on Friday-Sunday. Just have to be smart and look at how open flights are before you go to airport

Oh yeah, and free first class anywhere when it's open. 16 hours in free first class flight will forever change your mind worrying about flying stand by.
