Martin's going to be out awhile so you're looking at Greg Mancz & Tony Bergstrom.

In Nick Martin's absence, Greg Mancz assumes key role for Texans

The importance of Greg Mancz as a backup center just increased exponentially following the high-ankle sprain suffered by rookie starter Nick Martin.

It was Mancz who started against the San Francisco 49ers, not Tony Bergstrom, when Martin was sidelined with a back injury for the Texans' preseason opener.

It's Mancz who likely would start the regular-season opener Sept. 11 against the Chicago Bears if Martin remains out with the ankle injury.

The early revews have been positive on Mancz, an undrafted free agent who spent his rookie season on injured reserve last year with a knee injury that required surgery.

"I think you have to give Greg Mancz a lot of credit," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "Here’s a guy that has been really working hard to rehab to get back in there and played a lot of football.. Look, there’s a lot of things he needs to improve upon but I thought for not having played in a long time, he went in there and held his own.

After going undrafted out of Toledo, Mancz impressed the Texans coaching staff and teammates with his work ethic and toughness. The 6-4, 301-pounder played in three games before being placed on injured reserve in November.

"It felt good to get back out there with the guys," said Mancz, who was flanked by left guard Xavier Su'a-Filo and right guard Jeff Allen. "Having Jeff and X next to me helped calm me down. There's a lot to work on and I'm excited to work on it. I'm trying to do the best I can right now. It's been a long offseason, but a lot of vets have helped me. They've all been really positive and helpful."

"My knee feels great. It's been a lot of work to get to this point. Everything's going really well. I learned a lot my first year. I had great guys to learn from. I brought a lot of effort. I worked hard on everything."

As Texans rookie center Nick Martin contemplates his medical options, including potentially undergoing surgery to repair a high-ankle sprain, doctors weighed in on what's involved in the injury suffered by the second-round draft pick from Notre Dame.

The Chronicle spoke with Dr. Ken Jung, a foot and ankle surgeon at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, and Dr. Luga Podesta, the director of sports medicine at St. Charles Orthopedics in New York.

What is a high-ankle sprain specifically?

"It refers to a complex of ligaments, called the syndesmosis, that are located higher on the ankle than ligaments that are most commonly sprained with twisting injuries of the ankle," Jung said. "These ligaments stabilize the bones of the lower leg, tibia and fibula."

What type of surgery would Nick Martin possibly undergo?

"As these ligaments stabilize the tibia and fibula, surgery would be indicated if the bones are determined to be unstable," Jung said. "Typically, the bones would be fixed in a stable position with hardware, which may include plates, screws, or suture."

What's the chances this is a season-ending injury?

"If surgery is performed, it would be expected to be a season-ending injury," Jung said.

What type of treatment would be an alternate to surgery?

"Treatment will depend on ankle joint stability and weight bearing," Podesta said. "Other treatment options could include conservative care such as boot immobilization, non-weight-bearing for a period of time, ankle bracing followed by extensive physical therapy and strengthening. Biologic cell-based therapies such as PRP or PRP and bone marrow concentrate (stem cells) have also helped with healing the ligament in some cases."

What's the time table for a surgery versus rehab?

"This will depend on the severity of the injury," Podesta said. "If there is a severe ligament injury or significant instability, surgery is indicated sooner. It is also felt that surgery will provide a stronger and more complete healing of the ligament stabilize the ankle. Conservative treatment could require several months of therapy before the athlete is able to return to full sports."

Why would he need surgery if there's no broken bones?

"To repair or reconstruct the torn ligament and stabilize the ankle attempting to returning the athlete back sooner," Podesta said.

What's the chances this is a season-ending injury?

"There is a chance that this injury could be season-ending depending on the mode of treatment, and the athletes ability to rehabilitate after surgery," Podesta said. "Several months of rehab are typical to treat this injury conservatively."

Center Bryan Stork (4th round, 2014) was released by New England this morning. Has a concussion history but wants to continue playing.

The oline going forward looks terrible. Hopefully we add Stork and Filo improves to slightly below average. Maybe Martin doesn't miss the entire season.

If stork is healthy enough to play I would bring him in. We need depth on this line.

I can understand that. He's pretty much guaranteed to miss games in the near future, why waste their time integrating him in with the starters?

Martin getting hurt and Bergstrom being a disaster so far has pretty much screwed their Plan A and B. I know nothing about Mancz.

Of course there is, but if he needs surgery it won't be any time soon.

I don't think there's a chance he does not, barring some new injury.

Literally nobody has said his season is in question. I dont know why people are pretending like he's out for the year.

The things I didn't like about the draft seem to be coming back to haunt us.

I didn't understand going after multiple receivers and not addressing Crick's replacement. Now we're also dealing with a replacement for Watt for a few games.

I didn't understand Tyler Ervin for a number of reasons. RB wasn't a major need, too similar to Akeem Hunt, and if you really wanted a RB Devonte Booker was available.

Lastly, I felt they trading of picks to move up would have been used to pick extra offensive linemen - especially a backup tackle with Brown out. Now we are looking at Newton out too.

I do love the receivers and the Nick Martin and Reader picks.

It's a high ankle sprain and his season is in question because one of the options to treat it is surgery which would keep him out the entire year.

I agree. I don't get the Ervin pick. Maybe it was for ST, but I feel guys like Hunt or even Braxton could assume that responsibility. Wendell Williams hasn't shown anything, and neither has Ervin.

Hell, like Antonio Brown, let's try Fuller out at KR/PR. Or Charles James. Get creative.

We should've shored up the O Line. I'm not versed in schemes and formations, but man, there were so many times Saturday that Bergstrom screwed up so many plays.

I was excited about the signing in the offseason, but it's become alarming.
