"The Rangers view Gomez as a potentially better option than Delino DeShields..." - Dallas Morning News Poor Delino.
Key word is potentially, but we kept playing him based on that same potential. One thing that pisses me of about the last few years is this. We've left Gomez & Fowler in CF, despite clearly better options in CF.
Carlos Gomez and Delino Deshields is quite a tandem. Probably is not good news for Longhorn great (and former Astros unsigned pick), Drew Stubbs.
It could be worse. https://www.texastribune.org/library/data/texas-prisons/inmates/carlos-gomez/719628/
[Rangers GM] Jon Daniels: How soon were you thinking about Gomez? Talked about it in the past. Tried to acquire him when he was in Milwaukee several years ago & when he was a Met/prospect in Winter Ball. When designated, we had conversations. Wasn't something we were going to pursue until Choo got hurt. Admittedly, based on his performance over the season, it wasn't an obvious answer but as we did our homework and talked to people, it was a unanimous review. A lot of positive reviews, maybe contrary to stuff I've seen written out there. 30 years old, having a down year but there is physical skill & ability. Feel like if Carlos hits a little bit, plays defense & runs the bases, he'll be a good fit. Why did he fall off drastically in Houston? I don't know. We haven't uncovered something that we'll change this or that. Hitting guys have some thoughts. We'll see. Sometimes circumstances can play a role in performance. Different players fit in different environments. Sometimes it happens & it's hard to explain. The acquisition cost was so low it made sense to see if he can help us. Timetable? Most likely he's up end of the week. A few games in Round Rock & then bring him up and take a look and plug him right in and see where we go. That's the most likely scenario.
If he rejuvenates his career in Texas, that has to fall at the feet of our coaches, right? Maybe mitigated if our two prospects + Gurriel finish strong - but, man...
