ESPN pitch tracker is showing Giles throwing down the middle but being called balls. Not watching. Is the ump that bad?

This was his first save opportunity since being named closer. He should get a couple of games at least, shouldn't he?

I know Gregerson went through a rough stretch but there for a good while he was nails. I don't see why you have to have a set closer. Why not alternate every save op between a couple guys Giles/Gregerson and keep the arms fresh? You have the relief arms to swing it.

Aside from 5-9, Springer and Correa have underperformed. Carlos is 80% of his rookie year's production and Springer has OPS'd <.650 for half this season. To be champions, they need doing better along with several other players. Altuve is Olajuwon-lite, Bagwell-esk. Our pitching should be solid for years to come, especially if McCullers is healthy.

If you have 2 QBs, you what?

Guys like to have set roles. Every team does it. It is as much of a mental game as a physical game.

So what happens when one guy has closed 3 or 4 times successfully and the other guy struggles? People will just b**** about why we didn't keep going with the better one.

I don't see how this keeps arms fresh - it's not like whoever's not closing will just not pitch. Unless you're suggesting that we just give all those innings to worse pitchers instead?

Didn't check the thread during the game last night. Came in this morning expecting a more Gomez base running posts. How you gonna get benched for not having your head in the game one night, get a chance to pinch run in a late game spot the next night, and then forget how many outs there are when you're in scoring position?

This guy has got to go. Just DFA him.

It's Day 15 of Luis' 15-day. Reason this hasn't been mentioned around here is because the Astros haven't really mentioned it. Be surprised if he plays before Day 25.

Only caught the back end of this play. Gomez completely wiffed or tough luck?

It's baseball, they're not going to lost every game ;)

Glad to See Bregman settling in. We just need to stay within 3-4 games of wild card until Yuli, Valbuena, McClullers get back. Just try to stay afloat, then make a run.

    Altuve day off doesn't hurt.

It was a good move by AJ. Obviously not having Altuve hurts us but having a rested Altuve the next day pays off. Hopefully he'll be ready to go the rest of the stretch until we have a day off. Incredible player & story.

What are we seeing today we didn't a year ago?

Swing decision. He's choosing to lay off borderline pitches.

    Thoughts about the last week.

Hard to diagnose exactly why a team collectively goes into an offensive slump. I know they're capable of putting up much better numbers & they will. Have we dug ourselves a hole we can get out of? Yes. We'll keep battling. AJ will continue to mix & match. Doesn't make sense AJ was one of the best in the minors last year & not put it together. He will at some point. How much patience can we have this year vs. waiting until next year or the year after?

Deadline about being patient with guys?

No question. The two guys asked in every trade discussion was Musgrove & Bregman. Not worried at all about Bregman's intital struggles. Same with Musgrove. To give those guys up, it doesn't make sense for our club. They can help right now. Reed, Moran, Kemp, those are nice players & we'll get a couple good players out of them, we don't know how long it'll take but we have to be patient with them. Hopefully Valbuena & Rasmus come back & pick us up again.

    Valbuena?

We're optimistic. He won't come back right when he's eligible. If he's back & healthy for the full month of September, we're in good shape.

    McCullers?

We talked about the 2-week mark doing some diagnostics with the doctor. We'll come up on that in a little bit. That's the next check point. Not a lot of information. ... He's a guy you can imagine him starting game one of a playoff series. That's the trajectory. Hopefully we'll have that chance. Him, Keuchel & maybe Musgrove, we have enough guys to piece together a playoff rotation.

    Gurriel?

3B tonight. Matter of defensively him getting his legs under him to play every day. We expect him to play 4-5 days in a row when he's up. With the bat, all about timing. We'll watch him over the next couple days.

Bregman is pretty good at 3B.

Part of it depends on when Valbuena comes back. Yuli has played 3B for 15 years. It's a little unfair to ask a veteran like that to move to a new position while getting used to playing in the big leagues & the whole culture in the US. Not sure it's the right thing to do. Alex has done tremendous job. Yuli will be a good 3B. We'll see this year & take the offseason to reflect what our roster looks like.

You've been very patient with Carlos. We want to see Kemp & Marisnick.

AJ has been waiting all year for Jake to heat up to give him more playing time. Hard to bench a guy when the guy behind him isn't doing anything but that's changed. I expect Jake to continue to get a lot of playing time. That'll affect other outfielders. Rasmus is out right now & Gomez will probably be affected by that.

It was a tough read. White hit a ball that looked like a hit and Gomez was hauling butt from second. The RF dove and Gomez was gone.

I'm actually wary of Gurriel coming up now. Bregman seems to be coming around and his glove work at 3B has been nothing short of spectacular. If Gurriel is really so tender and locked in as a 3B I think their best bet is having him as DH, leaving Bregman be and inserting Valbuena back in at 1st when the time comes. Seems almost counter-intuitive to think YG is the bat to help the lineup, Bregman is going to contribute at 3rd but what we're working on is YG coming up to play 3rd and moving Bregman because he hasn't played 3B as long. Bregman has played more MLB games than Gurriel.....

Idk, I don't mean to be that guy but seems like if you were ready to sign a contract mid-season your "legs" wouldn't be an issue.

YG come on down. Just swing baby.

Yuli should become the everyday DH really. The lineup in 2 weeks should be:

    Springer (RF)
    Bregman (3b)
    Altuve (2b)
    Correa (SS)
    Yuli (DH)
    Valbuena (1B)
    Gattis (C)
    Marisnik (CF)
    Kemp (LF)

They can plug in Rasmus over Kemp when Castro plays catcher; And Gonzales can be the super utility guy at multiple positions. But Gattis should be replaced by Yuli at DH permanently.

The announcers crucified Gomez, but it was tough to know for sure if he was really at fault. It was a sinking liner that the outfielder made a full-speed extended dive to catch. You'd like to think that Gomez would have hung close to the bag, thinking he could score on anything that went past the outfielder, so it seems like he made a blunder.

If it weren't for a series of bad plays all season, it probably been shrugged off for being overly aggressive. But in the context of all the other bad plays, Gomez is going to get crushed for most anything he does.

btw, he was on second after aggressively stealing second. And if he had been thrown out, you can be sure he would have been raked over the coals too.
