I don't usually blame refs but the calls against Texas in the Ok St game were called out by a lot of non-texas fans. They beat OU last year so I don't see why it's not conceivable they could win again since I think the team will be better to some extent.

I picked the win against Notre Dame because if they have a good season then it means a lot of problems were fixed from last year and that would manifest itself in a win at home in primetime.

It's easy to dismiss Texas Tech when you're looking at the whole schedule but they play really well and their fans are insane when they host UT. I don't see trap games as only happening when you are thinking about future opponents. It has to do with how much you mentally prepared and overly confidence against an opponent. You're right, there is no excuse to lose to that team if you beat OU and Notre Dame but that's football. Great teams will lose to random mediocre teams despite beating other talented teams.

I agree about Fans during Mack's time. They got spoiled and just expected 10 win seasons. I'm not saying that I would bet my money that they win 10 games. I'm saying that if they have turned it around then I think this is how it could play out.

I feel very optimistic about 2017. 2016 could be good if Gilbert's system is simple enough for Buechele to step in and throw. It has been said it is a system that he is used to so it's possible. He has never been hit by a college defensive end and he won't be hit until Notre Dame so you never know.

I will say that the part of the team that I honestly think could bring them 9-10 wins in the running game. I have never seen the kid from Katy play but Chris Warren III could be unstoppable. It'll help the passing game with it. Actually, they would need to fit the disaster that was their defense or nothing will change.

Gonna guess it's somewhere in between Swoopes and Heard in terms of strength. Swoopes missed a lot of big plays in his career just by leading the receivers too far and Heards long ball tends to wobble and get held up. With Burt and Johnsons size, I'd rather get enough air under it to allow these guys to go up and make a play.

Yea I think it's a feeling that the team can really rise to the occasion with so much goodwill and momentum at this primetime game at home but if they're alone on the road then they will come back to earth. I hope they can win them both though.

He threw some deep passes in the spring. I don't think the deep ball is as important in college though than in the pros. I would be very happy with a QB that is accurate within 30 yards. I want a guy to be able to hit a WR downfield if he is very open but I don't like the idea of putting college WRs in position to have to make a tough play when in solid coverage which would require a pinpoint throw. There are better opportunities for success in the midfield.

Lots of good stuff. Strength coach Pat Moorer ordered 335-pound Chris Daniels to run steps at Memorial stadium and ran with him. Moorer also kept Marcel Southall after practice to run the field because he's gained 40 lbs since signing day.

QUARTERBACKS

Tyrone Swoopes has always had a right-armed cannon. His problem has been accuracy and consistency, and that’s why freshman Shane Buechele has the edge right now over the senior with 14 career starts.

For example, Swoopes found Reggie Hemphill-Mapps for a beautiful sideline pass on Saturday. But on the very next play, Buechele delivered an even longer throw to a diving John Burt.

On Sunday, Buechele dialed up deep balls for Jacorey Warrick and Devin Duvernay. Swoopes found Armanti Foreman with a nice throw, but there just weren’t as many of those did-you-see-that moments like with Buechele.

Jerrod Heard is clearly No. 3 at the moment. Observers spent the weekend wondering why he’s wearing gloves on both hands more than anything else. Matthew Merrick is fourth, and Kai Locksley is fifth.

RUNNING BACKS

Arguably the deepest position on the team already has flashed depth following a hamstring injury that Chris Warren III brought with him to camp.

Through two practices, Warren has mostly watched others carry the ball, so we’ve yet to see him join forces with D’Onta Foreman for a punishing duo that combines for about 500 pounds.

In Warren’s stead, Kirk Johnson got the majority of reps with Kyle Porter and Tristian Houston battling to keep pace. Johnson looks good, showing the same explosion he exhibited before tearing his ACL last Thanksgiving against Texas Tech.

Though Charlie Strong said Warren’s injury is a minor tweak, it’ll be a concern until he is able to get onto the field and begin practicing.

Sunday’s best run came by Foreman, who continued to picked up steam during a misdirection run that went for 20-plus yards. Since players are in shorts, tackling is off limits.

WIDE RECEIVERS

There’s real temptation to label John Burt as one of the nation’s best playmakers. His acrobatics over this first weekend were dazzling. But the sophomore has only 28 catches on his résumé. That number is going up dramatically soon.

Sunday’s practice looked like a home run derby at times. Foreman went deep and beat Kris Boyd for a touchdown catch. Hemphill-Mapps got past Kevin Vaccaro. Duvernay, who slipped out of his Baylor scholarship, now will spend the fall eluding everyone else.

But who’s going to keep the chains moving? Freshmen Collin Johnson (6-foot-6) and Lil’Jordan Humphrey (6-foot-4) can be matchup nightmares. Those two should never lose jump-ball situations.

Don’t be surprised if tight ends Caleb Bluiett and Andrew Beck get more involved with catches in traffic over the middle.

OFFENSIVE LINE

It looks like the only starting job up for grabs is right tackle, where Tristan Nickelson currently has the edge over Brandon Hodges, Patrick Hudson and Denzel Okafor.

Nickelson impressed his coaches in the summer by toning his body and now is looking to improve on his technique.

The other jobs are earmarked for Connor Williams (left tackle), Kent Perkins (left guard), Zach Shackelford (center) and Patrick Vahe (right guard), although Perkins and Vahe flip-flopped for Sunday’s practice.

It’s key for Shackelford, a freshman, to stay healthy because there’s not much behind him. Jake McMillon, who over the past few years has floated back and forth between defense and offense, is having some early issues getting snaps into the air.

Garrett Thomas and Baylor signee J.P. Urquidez are getting work behind Williams at left tackle.

DEFENSIVE LINE

A couple of those massive freshmen Charlie Strong has been raving about need to improve their conditioning.

That’s not our opinion, but the opinion of strength coach Pat Moorer, who ordered 335-pound Chris Daniels off the field to run stadium steps at the southeast end of Royal-Memorial Stadium. Moorer ran with Daniels. After practice, Moorer kept Marcel Southall and had him run 50 yards to midfield and back. Southall, who weighed 287 pounds on signing day, is now up to 327. That’s a 40-pound gain in six months.

With their peers building up their lungs, freshman tackles Jordan Elliott, D’Andre Christmas and Gerald Wilbon are taking snaps behind veterans Poona Ford, Paul Boyette and Chris Nelson.

Most concerning is what appears to be a lack of playmakers at defensive end. Someone needs to disrupt the pocket out of Bryce Cottrell, Charles Omenihu and Andrew Fitzgerald.

LINEBACKERS

Linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary was asked his thoughts about “The Shark.” That did not go over well.

“Well, first of all, we don’t call him The Shark. We call him Jeffrey McCulloch,” Jean-Mary shot back. The de-recruitment process has begun.

McCulloch, one of the nation’s top outside linebacker recruits, was on the receiving end of some serious tail-chewing at times this weekend. But he’s got tremendous talent, as evidenced by an interception of Jerrod Heard during Sunday’s practice.

If Anthony Wheeler, Tim Cole and Edwin Freeman are going to keep playing on the edges, they need to make some plays. In these controlled environments, it’s difficult to tell how they did. Linebackers aren’t allowed to take runners to the ground.

At middle linebacker, Malik Jefferson should make a ton of garden-variety tackles. If he doesn’t, this defense has huge problems.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

It’s easy to tell when defensive backs get beat. But you can also tell when they’re playing tight coverage and making life difficult for the offense.

Kris Boyd did that over the weekend. Holton Hill and Davante Davis both had highlight moments. Sheroid Evans, who simply refuses to give up despite numerous knee injuries, will be on the field in nickel situations.

At safety, Dylan Haines and Jason Hall continued to patrol the middle of the field. Haines had an interception on Saturday, and lest anyone forget, the one-time walk-on has had nine the last two seasons.

DeShon Elliott, Kevin Vaccaro, P.J. Locke III and John Bonney are also getting time at safety. Standout freshman Brandon Jones missed some practice time Sunday with an undisclosed injury, but returned.

SPECIAL TEAMS

If this new offense sputters, at least there’s a good punter to get them out of trouble. Michael Dickson has been unleashing booming shots with consistency, and at one point Sunday delivered a shot of 60-plus yards. And the hang time was good, too.

Placekicker Trent Domingue has been OK, making most of his field goal attempts but also clanking a couple off of the left upright. No matter what happens between now and the opener, the LSU transfer has the job sewn up.

Multiple players are auditioning for punt returner, but the smart money is on freshman receiver Devin Duvernay, who ran 100 meters in 10.27 seconds to win the Class 6A state title in 2015. Duvernay’s getting competition from Jacorey Warrick, Armanti Foreman, Reggie Hemphill-Mapps and Hill.

We’ve yet to see kickoffs, so there’s no telling who will be back for returns.

I agree with that. I like Burt's deep threat though. As Gucci mentioned, Heard just didn't have an arm, and that was frustrating.

Me too. Duvernay is going to be more of the same too. He has already become the fastest guy on the field. You want to trust your QB to overthrow it to them and let them get it instead of trying to pinpoint and getting the INT. If you have fast guys then put the ball in a place where only they can get to it.

-- The biggest thing to come out of the workout is we were told sophomore quarterback Jerrod Heard worked at wide receiver for the first time this preseason. As we reported all summer, Heard worked out at wide receiver during the team’s voluntary throwing sessions and has been prepared to make a position change if the coaches were to ask him to do so. A source close to Heard told us on more than one occasion that Heard likes being a Longhorn and is willing to do whatever it takes to help Texas win games, even if it means playing at a position other than quarterback.

-- Shane Buechele is still expected to emerge as the team’s starting quarterback when all's said and done. What a source recently told me about Buechele that should give the burnt orange faithful positive feelings about him running the team had to do with how he took on the role of being the lead dog throughout the summer. “He’s the guy always carrying around the bag of footballs and organizing the workouts,” the source said. “He’s got that ‘it’ factor about him. The coaches are trying to contain themselves and not get too excited but it’s hard not to when you see a guy attack it the way (Buechele) has.”

-- Sophomore running back Chris Warren was back on the practice field. The word on the hamstring tweak that kept Warren on the sideline for large chunks of the first two practices is something that’s been bothering him for the last couple of weeks, according to one team source. It’s not believed to be a serious issue, but the staff is definitely proceeding with caution.

-- True freshman defensive tackle Chris Daniels has been dealing with a sore foot, which is why he’s been out of action. The source who told me about Daniels’ foot injury said the 6-foot-2, 335-pound Euless Trinity product shouldn’t be on the shelf too terribly long.

-- The player who appears to have benefited the most from Daniels’ absence is fellow true freshman defensive tackle Gerald Wilbon. Wilbon has mixed in some with the second line, as have D’Andre Christmas and Jordan Elliott. The Louisiana native has become an early favorite of the staff due to what he’s put in since he’s been on campus. “He works his [expletive] off,” one source said. “These freshmen are hard workers but he’s the hardest worker of them all.”

-- Junior defensive end Naashon Hughes appeared to roll an ankle during a team period late in Sunday’s practice. It must not have been serious because the 6-foot-4, 237-pound Hughes was back on the practice field on Monday.

-- The folks we’ve talked to inside the program have been impressed with the true freshmen along the offensive line to this point. It shouldn’t be too much longer before Jean Delance, Patrick Hudson and Denzel Okafor begin mixing in more with the No. 2 offense on a regular basis. It sounds like the plan was to bring the linemen along slowly through the first couple of practices before turning them loose and seeing what they can do. Matt Mattox has already told the veterans that they’ve only got a certain number of practices to prove themselves because, at some point, he’s going to have to see what the freshmen do with a high volume of reps in practice. One thing that has impressed our sources with the youngsters has been their fundamentals. The presence they’ve provided and how far along they are already from a fundamental standpoint has greatly improved how the offensive line looks. The fundamentals are also a big reason why it appears to be only a matter of time before they make big moves up the depth chart and start knocking veterans out of the mix.

-- One of the more disappointing aspects of the early stages of camp, according to our sources, has been safety play. Even when things went behind closed doors on Monday the folks we talked to remained underwhelmed with the duo of Dylan Haines and Jason Hall. “They’ve got to get more speed on the field,” one source said. “I’m not sure how long they can go on as is.” (Howe)

Sounds like it was a bad sprain. Strong said he'll be back for ND but kinda doubt that. Big blow to the OL.

I never understood why Heard was a 4 star QB recruit. He couldn't throw. Throwing is a very underrated aspect of the QB position apparently. A lot of time and effort was wasted on him becoming our QB solution when it should have been obvious from the start that wasn't in the cards for him. We went a season with a kick returner at QB

I would assume there are some QB's that had skills in the past, but lacked a good arm. Then at some point became a good QB.

Being a 2 time state champion might inflate it a bit. VY wasn't that much more accurate in his first 2 years and not super accurate in his third. Heard just wasn't anywhere as good as VY on the zone read.

Also, Erick Fowler has submitted his scores and transcript to Clearinghouse and they'll determine if he is eligible to join the team.

There are a lot of college QB superstars that couldn't really throw all that well. VY and Tim Tebow come to mind. If you have legs and can create wide open receivers by getting on the move, you don't have to throw all that well in college to be successful. I assume they hoped Heard would be a poor-man's VY which is far superior to Swoopes or anything else they've on the roster for the past several years.
