The movie is pretty much the 2016 Rockets season; something isn't quite right at the start, though you can't quite place a finger on what's wrong, and there's a constant feeling that what you're watching should be so much better than it is. I enjoyed it for what it was, and the fact that I'm thinking about how it could have been better is perhaps a statement in itself; it's such a novel concept, and feels like it had potential to stand out in an ongoing tidal wave of superhero movies, but over and over again it plays it safe. This should have been a trope breaker, and instead it's formulaic. One thing that struck me is that for all the bluster of being "bad guys", none of the squad seemingly does anything in the movie to deserve the label; Tony Stark does way more selfish and destructive acts in the Iron Man/Avengers movies, and there's little motivation for the team to suddenly come together. For a team made up of a bunch of chaotic evil/neutral evil alignments who should be selfish, distrusting of each other, and work together poorly, the team for the most part functions well from the start, and it never once feels like they're in the slightest bit of danger, or that the dozens of faceless mooks they mow down pose any challenge at all. Never once do you get one of those epic "back to back", circle the wagons, fight alongside your brothers and sisters moments like in the Avengers or Civil War. Suicide Squad feels like a bunch of individuals constantly taking turns doing their own cool stuff, and the whole is less than the sum of their parts. I thought that Leto's Joker was kind of uneven, with some really high highs, and some very low lows. Very disappointed that Waller and he never got a scene together; I feel like this emphasizes how important Batman and the Joker are to each other, having only one part diminishes the other. You look at how good Ledger was, and I think about how Nolan did an amazing job of constantly finding time for long monologues, directly opposite characters with sticks firmly shoved up their asses, from Batman to Harvey Dent. In Suicide Squad, Joker never quite has enough time to build up to full steam in any scene, and lacks that contrasting straight man to make his brand of insantiy stand out. If you have a chance to track down the Justice League Unlimited Episode "Task Force X", Season 4, episode 4, I highly recommend it. In just 22 minutes, they do a far better job of actually telling a complete story of development, growth and clearly communicating that these guys are evil. It's a damn shame that DC has this outstanding animation series with shockingly tight continuity to pull ideas from, while Marvel is stuck with campy, poorly animated Saturday morning cartoons from the 90s, yet when it comes to movies, the two companies seem to completely switch their quality and storytelling philosophies.
Ending up like Denzel is not a bad thing Equalizer was a GREAT movie. (Wow! They going to do a Part II!! YES!! ) As for this movie. I think people need to set their expectations. I think people going to watch it with a 27% Rotten Tomatos ratings expectations will enjoy it more than the initial people. Lowered Expectations et al Rocket River
I was entertained. My screening seemed to have had a blast with this. Didn't really like Cara and the re-shoots were apparent.
Absolutely. Although I'd say that the movie wasn't a 27% RT disaster, it was still horribly written with characters that just seemed thrown in. Will Smith wasn't all too bad, but everything else was so lazy and cliche. Best part of the movie was the first 15 minutes where they're introducing all the "bad guys".
I saw this last night and wanted to sleep on it before I posted a review. After seeing the rotten tomatoes review, I went in with lowered expectations. I came out underwhelmed and just asking myself, where did it go wrong. There were so many missed opportunities with this film. There is a good movie in there, but I don't know if its too many chefs in kitchen or what. I give it a 5.5/10 with lowered expectation and a 4/10 with higher expectations. The biggest issue for me was the plot and the portrayal of Jared Leto's Joker. The Joker made me cringe. Spoiler tags for more on feelings towards the movie with spoiler potental. Spoiler Pros: The cast overall was very stronger making it more surprising how it didn't come together. The strongest performance to me are; Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, she completely nails the role. Will Smith surprised me as Deadshot. Viola Davis as Amanda Walker is dead on. I enjoyed the portrayal of Diablo, especially in the final act. Cons: The story is weakest point. There wasn't much plot and really didn't explain what the hell was going on with the antagonist. The entire movie i felt like so whats going on and what is Enchantress doing. They would cut back to her randomly to go, don't forget this is going on. Weakest Joker I have seen. I wasn't sure what he was going for and he failed at it. Missed opportunities on the action. There were some good moments but this should had more. Back to the story, Hey that's Katana her sword sucks your soul..... I think they realized last minute they forgot to write her in. I'm just frustrated with the overall experience, it had a lot going for it and it didn't deliver.
The more I read the more I feel like not going until it's out on digital. Every time I go see one of these **** movies the day it comes out, I'm just telling Warner Brothers: "Yes, I'm a huge idiot and I will pay to digest any garbage you offer". I'm getting tired of being a sucker.
Just saw it. Really liked it. Did not care for the joker at all. There should've been way more katana, she was dope. I had super low expectations after hearing that WB stepped in again but I really don't get all the hate. Being in this thread and liking this movie...I know how rocketslegend feels in the trump thread lol the boomerang cameo was nice.
WB should have stepped in earlier. They added scenes such as the Bar scene (needed more of that.). The Enchantress plot was the worst part of the movie. Smith and Robbie are great in their roles. Leto's Joker is a combination of the animated series joker, Ledger and Jack.....but it is different and somewhat lacking. Maybe in the stand alone Batman movie they flesh the character out. Davis' Waller is spot on. I give it a 6. There is a good movie in there. A better director and writer would have done wonders. Maybe in the sequel. With that said.....WB/DC stepping in after BvS actually gives me hope. I think WB/DC knew BvS couldn't be saved in a theater cut....that's why the ultimate cut was release with makes it a MUCH better movie. They did what they could with Suicide Squad...and it probably helped. Now...the changes they made BEFORE Justice League started shooting probably saved that movie from the fate of the first 2. Wonder Woman was a different creative team, less tied to the other movies......so it should be much better. WB/DC I think realize you need to have more a guiding principle when tying a Universe together, hence they brought in the WB/DC people to oversee everything now.
This isn't a movie. It doesn't operate like a movie. If the bar scene is a reshoot that was added (according to others in the thread) I want to know what was there before. Movie outline (no spoilers) Part 1. Long series of disjointed, unrelated short videos set to pop music. One after another. Part 2. Action scene Part 3. Sit in a circle and give exposition Part 4. Big Battle at the End™ Someone has already spoiled the big payoff for Deadeye's character. I WTFed in the theater because I have no idea what it meant and I am 55% sure val_modus has it wrong. I can see why people think it was editing or a hatchet job but after watching the end I am convinced this is the "movie" they wanted. Actors and special effects were all great. I feel really bad it all went to waste in this pile of crap. I'm done with DC until Zack Snyder is fired.
Spoiler Cast was great. Anyone complaining about the actors is missing the forest for the trees. Enchantress didn't do anything except a weird belly dance. What happened to that machine? The boss fight was just her brother. WTF happened to the Joker? They must have cut all of his scenes. Why did Harley jump in the vat of unknown whatever. It seems like that scene should have been way longer. Plot was "get out of jail, kill monsters, go back to jail".
It's been noted that WB came in and pretty much scrapped Ayer's original version and did a lot of post edits. So you have Ayer's version out there somewhere and WBs version (what we saw in theatres). And yes they did cut out several Joker scenes. Leto I believe has confirmed this.
Huh??? Not sure what you're reffering to at all. Btw, what did Zach Snyder have to do with this movie?
