You thought Toothless and the black kid were poor actors? I thought they were two of the better actors in the whole show.
All the kids were great. If anyone on the show could use some brushing up on their acting, it's Winona.
Lucas was the weakest of the kids, but I think it's because he was written as the straight man whereas the others were allowed to be kids and behave more naturally. I don't get why everyone harps on Winona, either. She was supposed to be a frazzled mom. Losing her kid takes it up a notch. I didn't have a problem with the acting other than how emotionless Dr. Brenner was. They could have had anyone with a frowny Jack-in-the-box face play him.
Under the definition of "histrionic" in the dictionary is a youtube video of Winona playing this character. The three boys were outstanding. Without that high quality, this is a meh show.
That Lucas kid was the weakest link among the kids though, always impulsive and scared. But someone had to play the jealous one. Frogface and Will were ok.
Lucas aint never scared! You're right about impulsive though, but never scared Spoiler If Lucas didn't go to the Gate alone in his Rambo gear to find Will, the group wouldn't have known the energy company was coming after Eleven. everyone is on equal footing; no weak links.
It is nitpicking at the end, the other boys were pretty convincing, he was a tad below them. Alright, he looks frightened but has balls for sure. I also do not like Jonathan's friend, Nance. It is all good in 80s Indiana.
it was a re-animator/from beyond reference away from being complete. well, maybe from some allusions to obscure 80s movies in there too. i hated the teen romance. most boring part of the show. atmosphere by joy division on the soundtrack was a pleasant surprise.
One of the chapters was titled The Body. The same title to the Stephen King story which Stand By Me was based on. The kids set out on a journey following train tracks too. I couldn't work out who 11 reminded me of when watching the shown but then it dawned on me. She looks like a younger River Phoenix when he was in SBM. It didn't register at first because the older brother looked like River too.
I thought all kids were great with Mike being the weakest and all the others on par. Winona was good with some over the top moments. I just loved the 80s feel. After 8 episodes I felt like it was short.
I'm about to start episode 7 and im loving this show so much. Also really love the sheriff's character, I feel like I can totally relate to him. All actors are brilliant though Not looking forward to finishing with only 8 episodes in season 1. Really wish there was more
It is an unwritten rule, in the " how to be a jerk" book. Common decency and respect for some one checking in to learn how well received a show is should prevail over your made up rules. That being said. Great show. Quickly become one of my top show seasons of all time. I'm not quite understanding the kid hate. They were cute, likable and made you care about them.
Wow what an incredible show. Every last square inch of the frame and music note was an unfettered love letter to classic 80's cinema. I was completely sucked into every single scene and every bit of dialogue. Strong acting all around. And I disagree about Winona and Modine. She was absolutely believable as an increasingly unhinged mother who's desperately searching for a lost child. Think Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters. As for Modine, he followed the less is more template. He was quite effective in conveying his sadistic nature in the limited interactions we had with him. Definitely want to see more of this world but I wonder if they can possibly match the quality of this first season. Best show on tv though. At least for me and the wife.
The only thing that bugged me about the show was Spoiler why they let the Sheriff live? They drug him and send him home? Was it because he was better use to them if they just track him? Otherwise, the show was great. Good use of music and GREAT child actors.
Spoiler I thought they let him live because he was just too big a target to take out. If he talked to anyone about what he saw (he only talked to Winona) they would just say he was on Drugs. The Energy Company was trying to not to raise suspensions while trying to get Eleven back. Look how much trouble they went through to cover up Will's disappearance. The guy at the dinner was just a random member of the community so he was expendable. that's my guess
I had the same thoughts about Hopper too. Spoiler That they didn't kill him was probably because it would draw too much attention to themselves and could possibly bring in state and federal authorities that don't know about the existence of that lab. But then it just makes it odd that they killed the diner owner in the first place. The lady could have easily found out if he had seen her do anything funny. And because he's assuming she's a social worker, he'd probably forget about 11 after they take her away. In fact they set a precedent by killing him, so I almost expected Mike's parents, the science teacher and Hopper to all meet the same fate when those goons came calling. But I guess at that point, when they had to investigate the school and teacher and talk to Mike's parents, it was becoming too big to contain by simply killing off people.
