that ain't working, that's the way you do it money for nothing and your chicks for free I miss my MTV.
This link is incredible. I've been going through it all week and have a playlist of 200 songs so far on Spotify from it. http://120minutes.tylerc.com/
I was an avid watcher of 120 minutes and Yo MTV Raps. I don't know which one to vote for. I guess I'll choose 120 minutes because it was on for a longer time, so I probably watched it more. I also agree with IRS the Cutting Edge. That was awesome show. One that I haven't seen mentioned was the Young Ones. That was brilliant series.
I completely forgot about this - thanks for the reminder check out my spotify playlist, you may like it - its called: Control-alt-80s
I'm actually listening to one called "120 Minutes Full Archive by Frank Spinillo" right now. Is Control-Alt better a list you put together on there? I'll change over now.
I was definitely a 120 Minutes guy. Watched it every Sunday night. Probably my first exposure to REM and RHCP, which were 2/5 of my Big 5 in high school. I still remember seeing the video below for the first time on 120 Minutes and thinking "holy ****, who ARE these guys??" <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KvR86EwYNGU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Had the same reaction seeing this video, but in a totally different way... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DJJwjE2TG6Q?list=PL7zrnXIkwlVx--aSS486sXIeVSZFFWgOa" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Definitely. I had the same reaction the first time I saw this late one night in '90 or so. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lkFMJ4-ai1I" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Random story: I played in an original band in the early 2000's and we had one of our songs played on a show called Fraternity Life or something like that. I had quit that band (and it's free gigs) to join my current band and one day I happened to be watching that show and heard the song. Very surreal. So now I can tell my kids that daddy once played on MTV and technically I won't be lying.
interesting..here it is - 363 songs https://play.spotify.com/user/troyandnetty/playlist/1rc47kxenBhqKLJMDBt53X
Are these shows that were on MTV? I don't remember any of them. In fact, the only thing I remember about MTV growing up was that in like 4th grade they played Hootie and the Blowfish every morning right before I left for school and Ace of Base, I Saw The Sign every day around 4 when I got home from school. This, of course, was back when MTV played music. Not "Teen Mom" reruns.
For those interested in the formative years of MTV, there's an oral history called "I Want My MTV." Oddly enough, I just picked it up a couple of weeks ago, and started reading it. So far, I've really enjoyed it. As you might imagine, there are lots of anecdotes about how hard the bands in those days partied, but most interesting to me has been the overarching story of how music videos were viewed over time, from being curiosities that only the most outside-the-box thinkers in the music industry valued to being a medium that could literally create stars out of thin air. Anyway, I'd highly recommend it.
It's not as old as a lot of what's talked about here. But Human Giant maybe the best show MTV has ever had.
