Castro is currently 25th in fWAR among catchers. He may be an elite framer (not so sure), but no way that skill pushes him into the top 10 catchers in baseball. He's an average starting catcher who has put up 1 excellent season and has an injury history. I wouldn't be concerned if he resigned, but Lucroy represents a significant upgrade.
since it's all hypothetical, how about cameron rupp + odubel hererra for 2nd tier prospects+ devenski. why the phillies do it? they owe us! plus, i think one of their beat writers wrote we don't know how to value our own prospects. I like the Castro and gattis tandem though.
fWAR doesn't take into account framing. So we need to find a framing stat to add that to fWAR. Look at Baseball Prospectus's catcher stats to find them quantify framing stats. Divide each catcher's catcher framing runs by 10 to convert to wins. Add to fWAR. He passess everyone except the the top 5, McCann, and Gandal. That would put him as the 8th best catcher from a purely statistical argument. 3 extra strikes a game above average is huge.
Since May 25, Keuchel has a 3.39 ERA, McHugh has a 3.38 ERA, McCullers has a 2.74 ERA and Fister has a 3.42 ERA. The pitching has been awesome, and is the primary reason for the great play. Keuchel and McCullers are the big ones. Keuchel is getting Dallas Keuchel results now, and is pitching like a frontend guy. McCullers has almost exactly a full year worth of starts. 35 Starts 202 Innings 3.21 ERA 10.2 K/9 3.9 K/9 The walks have started to bite him a little this year. It hasn't hurt his results, but it has led to shorter than ideal outings, so he still has room for growth. Even if he doesn't improve, he's already awesome and could easily grow into a true ace. Him and Keuchel could give us a top notch 1-2 punch without a trade.
Given what the Rangers just gave up to get two pitchers formerly on the scrap heap, not sure there's going to be a workable deal for pitching to be had unless it's part of a larger trade to also net a hitter. I kind of wish Luhnow had said we will not entertain trading Bregman versus saying we're not going to entertain it at this time. Let the kid get acclimated to the bigs without thinking he might get dealt if the right deal popped up before Monday.
He said yesterday that they wouldn't be trading him... but his name has come up in every deal they've discussed so far for major players with team control left, so its unlikely a deal will be done of that nature.
Very true, beware of GMs from Atlanta offering major league pitching. In general, the prices are still inflated this year which is great for the Braves and others.
Giants got Nunez, a good fit for them. Cost them a top 100 prospect even if Meija wasn't considered high end, still a good get for Minny given their investment in Nunez.
The sound bite they used of Luhnow on 790 this morning didn't state they wouldn't be just not being considered at this time. It's a difference of interpretation but maybe the Astros are still batting around the idea of making a Sale like splash.
Eh... that's really splitting hairs. He literally said that "they would have a hard time considering Bregman in any trade scenario at this time." Sure, maybe in the off-season they consider it... or maybe 5 years prior to him being a free agent... but listening to the interview in its entirety, you could infer that they're not looking to actively trade Bregman (at this time). Now, that doesn't exclude the possibility that they tried to work on a Sale trade last week (prior to Bregman's promotion) and were rejected. There was a report that a team offered the White Sox a sizable package that was turned down. We all felt Bregman would be called up for the Angels series... instead he had to wait 3 more days (which merely led to him having to fly from Fresno to Houston, instead of Austin to Houston).... so something could have definitely been in the works.
I wonder if Bregman has been hurting Astros trade negotiations. Astros: We'll give you 5 top 100 Prospects White Sox: We want Bregman Astros: How about 7? White Sox: We want Bregman
Prices so far have been pretty ridiculous. Fringy rental BoR with a little upside are being traded for Top 100 prospects. A rental closer pulled in 2 really good prospects plus a lotto and a major league pitcher. If that's what it'll take to add, I assume Houstkn will just stand pat.
Perhaps. He is just that much better and more advanced (ready to contribute) than any other hitting prospect they have right now. Most of the teams selling aren't desperate from a financial or fan-base standpoint, and like Luhnow said, these are club-controlled guys so they can afford to wait for an offer that completely blows them away. Hell, there's a chance an offer that even had him included was rejected...
In this market going after a starting pitcher is not worth it. Trade Feldman, try and trade for a LOOGY. And then I would try and find a rental bat. Someone that can hit LHPs like Steve Pearce would be a good option.
The teams that could use Feldman the most also happen to be some in direct competition with the Astros...
the more i think about it the more i'm content with staying pat - a TOR pitcher will simply cost too much. i'd love (puke) to see beltran here batting DH but i'm not sure how feasible that is.
He's my top target because of what he can produce for us...and because his cost is probably the lowest among anyone comparable, given his age and his free agency at the end of the year. Not so sure the Yankees are sellers anymore, but would love to have him be our full time DH.
Trading Feldman would probably net a good prospect but he's been so good out of the pen and in spot starts. I'd hate losing him.
Pretty sure this is what it woukd take to get Sale: 1 of McCullers or Bregman 1 of Reed, Martes, or K Tucker 3 of Fisher, Paulino, Musgrove, Abreu, or Cameron As much as I will hate seeing Sale go to the Rangers for a similar package, I would not want Houston to make that trade.
