Great pitching tonight. Great win on a night when teams we are chasing lost. Still, gotta get the bats going.

Post his numbers in "close situations"..... 9th inning (or later), <3 runs

There's still hope, but he seems inept as an Astro in that regard.

That is incredibly silly. NASCAR-level silly.

So a 1-run game in the 8th inning is not a "close situation"?

    Blame Giles for that "silliness".

He did it, not me. I'm just reporting

    In Giles case.... NO

Dude had been on a hot streak (non-9th inning) then pitches the 9th (or later, I don't recall specifically) and gives up a run. Why did that have to happen at that particular instance?

He has talent, but with HOU, he just seems mental in specific close situations.

Trust me, I'll gladly eat crow if he executes what he was traded for.

should have taken game 1 easily but it is what it was. 4-2 home stretch is quite dandy. These next two opponents are intriguing match ups, detroit is just like us but with pitching woes. Toronto, we evenly match up with. 4-3 road trip would be magnificent.

The vast majority of Giles appearances have been in close situations. He's had only two ninth inning save opportunities, and yes he blew one (which doesn't make him that much worse than the other guys who have handled the 9th this year).

As usual, you're getting owned with people thwarting your opinions with stats and facts, while you state things like "I don't recall specifically..."

    It's only a 3 game road trip.

They come back home to play Toronto and Texas.

Should know a lot more about what they need to do from here on out to secure a playoff spot after those two series... In addition to the fact that the trade deadline would have come and gone by then.

So the facts say Giles blew a 9th inning save? That was exactly my point.

We all know save opportunities can exist before the 9th, but my point was specifically that inning.

    - If you think the 7th and 8th feature as much pressure as the 9th, there's no point discussing further.
    - if you think a hot 7th-8th inning pitcher who all of a sudden f**** up the 9th, doesn't have potential issues as a closer, there's no point discussing further.

We all know why Giles was brought here.... and he still hasn't done what was expected of him.

He's had 2 chances... TWO. If you're literally going apoplectic about the blown one, why not do the same with the converted one?

He had a terrible start... and has been lights out since he got things right. You literally cannot argue with his performance over the last 30 appearances. And during that time, both Harris AND Gregerson have had more blown 9th inning saves than he has. Giles also has a 2 year track record prior to this one.

In the end, I applaud the front office and Giles for righting the ship. Fact remains, things are pretty stable as is right now... I don't see them changing anything as long as Harris doesn't have any consecutive meltdowns... and Giles will still be the likely closer of the future.

I suggest you go back to discussing Nascar.... you're way out of your league here.

Giles reminds so much of Lidge. Gas on the fastball, vicious slider. He looked dominant last night, hopefully a confidence builder. He/Gregerson/Harris are a decent end game combo. McCullers was straight nasty last night, he's going to be our Ace before long...what is he, 22? 23 maybe? Nice. That knuckle-curve!

8 relievers, short bench...trade deadline looming...what's it going to be? Couple of em for a lefty arm? Outfielder?

Was at the game last night. Nobody on our team has what Lance has. Keuchel will continue to be a great Astros pitcher for us.
Lance is a strikeout pitcher. When this dude gets ahead in the count (like he obviously tries to), he's very nasty.

Lance is maturing before our eyes. I was a little worried at first. I was hoping his roof wasn't Bud Norris. It's not, and it won't be.

Fister is about to go on paternity leave so they will probably put him on the list a day or two early so they can call up another bat (thinking Kemp because of the versatility).

First off...... Giles has had waaay more than 2 chances. HE HAD THE ENTIRE SPRING TRAINING. Did you forget?

Secondly.... In his one "save" this season, he gave up an ER. Did you even know that before you posted your Charmin-strong rebuttal?

Like I already said earlier on this same page, "THERE'S STILL HOPE", I'm not damning Giles' close-ability forever. I'm simply saying, thus far, he's been a f*** up in that particular 9th inning situation as an Astro.

There's really no refuting that statement, but you'll find a way.... and it will be Charmin-strong.

We talking about spring training? Not a game...but practice? What are we talking about.

Yeah, he had zero save opportunities in spring training. That being said, its already well documented that he had a rough start to the season. You're the one that's brought up his performance simply in 9th inning save opportunities only.

And he's got a 1.93 ERA over his last 30 appearances. This coincides with the sub 2 ERA from last year when he was a full-time closer. For the season (bad start included), his ERA is now respectable... and he's still featuring stellar K/9 inning peripherals in universally high-leverage situations.

He's had all of 2 games. You calling him a **** up for only that would definitively have you now approaching cangre levels.

xFIP wise, Giles has actually been better this year. Basically telling us that he has gotten extremely unlucky with the HR/FB rate.

The expectation is 700 baseball LOL.

    Come on now.

This team has been dominating. I am a bit sour about the Yankee game.

The Yankees vets really stepped it up in this series.

Hopefully G-Money will do what he was brought here to do.
