I'm going to be working for a hedge fund that specializes in power trading. My background is in electrical transmission.

He's notoriously a bad communicator and did not really give people a way to reach him by phone. I don't think I've ever seen him use Skype.

I think I'm going to email him, then meet with the CEO (his boss) and the HR Director. Thanks for the advice brehs! I'll let you know how it goes.

    Email is 100% fine.

Explain that you would have preferred to speak in person, but that it's an urgent matter and you wanted him to know as soon as possible.

There is nothing wrong with emails. Nobody is "owed" a phone conversation, as if that's really any better. At the end of the day, you are better off and the company is better off by knowing about the situation sooner than later.

Update: I told my boss over email. He wasn't exactly happy but was understanding. He said something like "I almost lost my home country and now I'm losing you". Everything is arranged with HR and my end date and start date is now set. I'm beyond excited for the transition. Thanks for the advice brehs!!

    You did the right thing.

I'm in accounting and I quit during year end because my new company wanted me. Wasn't much I could do. Also, when I quit, they had two business unit controllers quit, a manager from a business unit, and someone else. So it wasn't basically the best time.

But, before that they were laying off plenty of people, and didn't give them any notice. I learned early on, you have to look out for number one. They'll lay you off to save a dime if they need to, so you can't be afraid to do what's best for you too.

Congratulations! I feel bad for your boss that he's having to deal with all of this at a tough time for him personally, but he'll survive as will the company. You handled it about as well as you could have given the circumstances.

This sounds like the start of a romantic soap opera.

Your dream job is being an employee of a hedge fund?

Wouldn't your dream job be to actually own the hedge fund?

Regarding the question, a skype call will show you cared enough to go out of your way to let him prepare, to see your face and hear your tone, and that you did it while he was away only because you didn't want to put him in a position of chaos down the line.

Congrats breh! Not many can say they are working their dream job. Hell I certainly am not.

To celebrate, you should trade me Chris Bosh for Zach Randolph.

You did the right thing for yourself and your family. It is unfortunate timing though for your boss. I would suggest perhaps sending a good bottle of wine to your boss afterwards. Won't cost you too much and it will be a good gesture

That's an odd thing to say. Actually my real dream job would be to get paid to sit at home and watch sports, but that's not really a thing just like owning a hedge fund at this point in my life. I guess it's a "dream job" in terms of realistically attainable positions at this point in my career. Gotta start somewhere.

Thanks, breh. No to the trade though, I need Bosh for the defense to work.

Just email and explain. They may ask you to email it anyways so they can have it on file.
