I disagree with that. If Melania really did a lot of this work herself, it makes more sense to me. And here I go offending some people, but, as a prof, I've worked with tons of international students from all over the world. And there are just different mindsets in various cultures about what is and is not allowed for attribution and what would amount to plagiarism. I have no idea exactly what her schooling was, when it was, and whether she ever had to compose written assignments in America, but to me, she may have a much better excuse than any American speechwriter would have. I'm kinda with Juan on this. It's such a minor deal, but just make one statement and be done with it. "We regret any similarity to the earlier speech and have taken steps to make sure that doesn't happen again." That's all. They don't even have to fully own it. The interesting part, in the speechwriter's letter, is that Melania allegedly really admires Michelle Obama. Whoops, LOL.
Right now journalists on Twitter are questioning whether Meredith McIver even exists. I mean, she could be the same person as John Barron...
You can't plagiarize the love of 6 red stripes, 7 white stripes and a whole mess of stars! It's what's in her heart that counts the most! Seriously though, it's like Trump and Clinton have a bet on who can lose the presidency faster. Trump was an inside job!
I'm not really sure if there's a big difference between this: and this: Anyway, she's apparently (somewhat) college-educated, in that I guess she went to school for architecture & design but dropped out after one year. Honestly, I truly think she just shares her husband's hubris.
To be fair, we've seen some bad PR management from Clinton and Obama as well. Clinton is always getting caught in this same BS -- lying to dodge the jackals but then getting caught in the lie. Obama's main problem seems to be speaking without full consideration of possible outcomes, like the redline in Syria, or the time he condemned the lady from the Dept of Agriculture based on a clearly partisan gotcha video. Everyone has flubs. I guess it's just Trump is flubbing on the softballs.
I know right, I mean, after all the specials and fan fare surrounding OJ Simpson as of late I wish they would acquit him all over again just out of pure sympathy. We get it, OJ was a murderer, and a bad dude, but he did light it up in the NFL and on the TV and Movies.
I agree. This is a pretty trivial matter. I laughed and found it funny for the first hour but this has nothing to do with policy.
I don't watch it but I can only imagine. The reason is that it's super easy to "report." There's no overhead or difficulty or effort needed to continue running with this story. And the viewers are already familiar with it, so you don't have to try to explain anything either. Such trash "journalism."
Yes, and now there are people putting all these famous quotes with her picture and ridiculing her. I admit, the picture above is a perfect example- it's funny at first, but it's getting to be too much. We shouldn't stoop down to that level- they made a mistake, they owned up to it today, move on. Some of us cyberbullies on the left can be just as bad as the ones on the right.
I teach a lot of international students myself Other languages have different approaches to plagiarism indeed. But that doesn't clear away everything. The Republican Party is American, Dude! This is the same old "blame the foreigner" argument that is Trump's bread and butter. No . . . the RNC served up plagiarism to the American people in the biggest speech of the first night of its convention. Maybe Republicans are OK with this, but I don't want this type of crap representing me as an American on the world stage. This is crap quality control by the Republican Party, plain and simple. Trump's people set up Trump's wife to take a fall, unintentionally or not. Trump's people set up people in this thread to take a fall! People like BigDog63 were valiantly denying plagiarism, only to be shown up by the very people they were defending! Trump made his own defenders look bad. Melania is a victim in this. So is everyone except the Trump machine.

That's the thing. Every administration makes mistakes and sometimes administrations face situations where there are no good options. This is a 70 mph batting practice fastball. If you can't even handle this, it doesn't look good for you facing live game pitching.
If it's not your native language, it really may be hard to pick up on those nuances. Plus, she may have just trusted McIver to have made judgement calls on the matter. Anyway, as another poster already said, it’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up. If I saw a small local CEO or politician handing their business this way, I'd think it shady. But a US presidential candidate... it's astonishing.
Michelle Obama Sings Stevie, Raps With Missy, On 'Carpool Karaoke; next on Melania's plagiarism to-do list
I disagree. Trump brings this on himself. They don't own up to mistakes, even when they're proven. They still haven't owned up to it. They made some tacit admission of guilt, but even that admission soft pedaled the plagiarism as an accident. I'd have dropped this story 2 days ago if they'd have just said sorry. The Trump campaign draws it out by making excuses. It's finally going away now, but Melania will never live it down because they fielded it so badly. While I'm complaining: "work hard for what you want in life"? She dropped out of college, had a short career as a model, and married an elderly billionaire. When did she work hard again? Okay, I think it's all out of my system now.
I hope we really don't have to explain this to you. I for one would have worked in a Siberian mine for a few years before seeing the Donald naked even one time. Never mind anything else beyond that... She has worked hard for what she wants in life. Hat tip. Or something tip. EDIT: I see I am too late.
