Obviously we don't know exactly what is going on in Turkey but if I had the chance to go I would go back. Istanbul is an amazing city and Turkey is an amazing country. The history and geography was incredible and it was very modern. The people are friendly and the only trouble I had was from aggressive rug sellers in Istanbul.

One of the best travel experiences I had was the first full day I was there was going to the Blue Mosque at dawn.

Mathloom, you are really comparing the French revolution of hundreds of years ago and saying that is somehow equivalent to beheadings in 2016? Interesting take.

Even then, the guillotine was merciful compared to what these barbarians are doing to people.

Nice example, thanks for proving that Islam and the mentality of most of its followers hasn't progressed for centuries and has to be compared to medieval Europe.

Not at all. I've said repeatedly I hate Erdogan and very thankful for the French aristocracy's stupidity centuries ago.

I'm mocking the framing in ATW's article. The article and ATW are clearly insinuating that this behavior is specific to Muslims rather than specific to internal violent strife in any country in any decade in the whole world. Ten years ago, this behavior would have been as unlikely in Turkey as it would be in Germany. 99% of Turkish Muslims are in horror of this outcome, as we all are. It has nothing to do with Islam.

However I will say, I don't differentiate between a beheading and a lethal injection when it comes to WAR. I'm a pacifist, to me these are both murder. I don't believe that if you incinerate someone with a drone it is more humane than physically removing their head. It's the actual murder that's brutal to me, the method a mad man takes based on his or her resources doesn't surprise me anymore. Those people on the bridge wouldn't have beheaded him if they were armed. They would have shot him for shooting at people earlier.

And the crusades yeah because I've brought that up literally literally 2 times in almost 10 years of posting, and half of those were in a thread about the crusades.

But if it makes you happy, Christians and Muslims have a brutal history of mass murdering people for religion and in Christians' case it's the crusades that was the big show.

    It is.

Yes, that was before Islamist Erdogan took Turkey back to the dark ages. More Islam = more beheadings.

No, they are not. The majority of Turkish Muslims supports Erdogan. And Erdogan is talking about retroactively introducing the death penalty again, which in itself says everything about how little this guy knows or cares about rule of law.

LOL. Nothing ever has to do with Islam. Murderers can scream Allahu akbar while they are bombing, shooting, beheading people, and you and people like you will just keep saying "oh they are not Muslims, it has nothing to do with Islam". Of course it has to do with Islam.

    The truth.

The French Revolution was at the cusp of French industrialization, and way past the medieval period, though. Plus the actions of ISIS, the French Revolution, and this farce in Turkey are not even comparable beyond the common trait of people dying.

Call me when someone shouts "Liberty, Fraternity, and Equality" before commencing a suicide bombing.

Is Erdogan in it for the power or is he a true believer?

He's not a cleric nor does he want to be. He's just an authoritarian politician who uses religion as his tool to rally more sheep. The only difference between him and George Bush, for example, is that Bush's faction couldn't formally expand their power because American institutions are more independent.

You put George Bush in Turkey, and Cheney seizes the military and judiciary in two seconds.

This is such bullcrap. George Bush was a man with good intentions. Erdogan is a corrupt, ruthless dictator blinded by greed and his fanatical ideology. To even mention the two in the same sentence is an insult to Bush.

Turkey is making stronger suggestions that the US was behind the coup attempt.

[rQUOTEr]Turkey widens crackdown on military, judiciary after failed coup BTW, Incirlik is where the US keeps its anti-Russian nukes.

    ...

On Saturday, Labour Minister Suleyman Soylu told broadcaster Haberturk he believed Washington was behind the coup attempt. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry described public suggestions of a U.S. role as "utterly false", and said on Sunday Washington had had no advance intelligence of the coup.

The Pentagon also announced on Sunday that operations from Turkey by the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State had resumed after Ankara reopened its air space, which had been closed during the coup attempt.

However, U.S. facilities were still operating on internal power sources after Turkey cut off the mains supply to the base. Kerry said the difficulty for U.S. planes using Incirlik may have been a result of Turkish aircraft flown in support of the coup using the base to refuel.

If we were behind that "coup", which I doubt very much, it was our worst such maneuver since the Bay of Pigs.

What does Erdogan gain by all this finger pointing at US? Is he trying to get out of NATO, or get our military out of Turkey anyway?
