Hoping they can get one of those for a Tucker, Paulino, Musgrove type package. Getting an ace and keeping Reed, Bregman and Martes would be huge.
how about D'back Grienke/Goldschmidt...haven't done much last yr or this...not saying both but one or the other ? Archer, Eovaldi, Cashner, Gray...team has pieces to make it happen. I think we are need of a SP IMO
Theyd have to empty the farm including Bregman for Grienke or Goldschmidt. None of the other SP's being discussed in trades are that impressive. I'd rather give a few shots to guys in the farm and see if one is ready to stick. Keuchel's last 5 starts have been in cy Young form, Fister is the constant, McCullers keeps improving, McHugh and Fiers aren't always consistent but have been dominant at times. Feliz, Rodgers, Musgrove, Martes, Paulino. They have some guys who are close
Would guess he means Dbacks haven't done much In any case, that team has money and can't imagine they would see themselves as sellers even if this year is gone for them
I may be alone on this one. I know we need SPs. But given the market right now, there's no one I absolutely love given the purportedly ridiculous asking prices on these guys. I'd rather just ride it out with what we have. I don't want to gut the farm after what we went through (2006-2013) just for a middle of the line, even a #2 guy. The 15th best overall prospect just went for Drew Pomeranz. Drew Pomeranz! He's having a strong season, no doubt, but just looking at his track record, he's not the type of pitcher I swap Reed for. I like Archer, but let's not act like he's having an ace season. He's not. He has a 4.6 ERA. Not worth nearly the haul TAM is asking for (some execs are calling the asking price "laughable").
I hear what you are saying, and don't totally disagree But I wouldn't worry as much about the farm by comparing to the 06 years. Drayton totally ignored the farm, that's why we got so bare much more than trades... And while Archer has struggled this year, he is 27 and has three previous years saying he is front of rotation quality. And even this year his K rate is elite I would put Reed in a deal for Archer, but that would probably not even get a conversation started and I wouldn't add many more top prospects to him
DBacks only could afford Greinke with backloading his contract. I don't see them selling those two, but they don't have any money to spare. They likely sell other players.
They don't have other big money players though, not in today's workd I think they hold everyone, hope that Gold gets off to a better start next year, Pollock comes back healthy, Bradley is improved and Shipley ready. Just don't see them selling off the year that they signed Greinke long term and had a lot of injury issues
One consideration is roster and playing time limits. Keuchel, McCullers, Fiers, and McHugh are going to be around for awhile. Where are Musgrove, Rodgers, Paulino, Martes, etc going to play? And it's not like there will be a ton of open spots in the bullpen. They're already having trouble finding enough plate appearances for their top position player prospect, and there are quite a few quality prospects in AAA (Singleton, White, Moran, Tucker, Teoscar, etc.) that have no place to graduate to in Houston. I don't want to gut the farm, but marginal improvements don't seem worthwhile and to acquire the players who will move the needle is going to be painful. I want Houston to win the World Series; as a fan that's really all I care about. And I personally feel that their best chance to win is in the next 3-5 years. So I'm on board with any trade that makes them significantly better in the short to medium term.
Agree in general I think Keuchel and McCullers are the only two starters we have with any kind of guarantee to be around a while though. I could see McHugh and Fiers here, but could easily see them moved in a deal for another top of rotation controlled type One of them plus prospects for a better starter is what I would most expect
[rquoter]Aroldis Chapman, LHP, Yankees — The player acquisition cost is going to be high, but teams such as Washington, Texas, Houston, and the Cubs may pay it. The Yankees are looking to get a good haul if they trade him and looking to perhaps re-sign him in the offseason. He’s already a must-see event for Yankees fans. The price tag in free agency? Anywhere between $11 million and $15 million per year. https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/...l-rest-east/mSbpQPgnkRWQ1J5UjL7WfM/story.html[/rquoter]
I might be willing to make a move for Archer, as I would hope it's a buy low situation. He provides depth in the event Fister regresses, and a Dallas - Lance - Fister - Archer - McHugh rotation is solid. However, with Dallas having 6 or so solid to great starts, Lance & Fister remaining pretty damn good, and Fiers/McHugh providing quality starts, I find it hard to imagine a major SP acquisition. I think in the Playoffs the lack of real depth may hurt, but the top of the rotation is really rounding into form.
I still think Devenski will be in the rotation by September. Maybe a couple bad starts by Fiers over the next couple of weeks does it. Maybe he's part of a trade we make. In either case, I think CD is a full time starter soon.
Not a chance of that, despite his meh season so far, given his age, prior performance and his undermarket contract (5 more years for ~$39M)
It truly is amazing. I'm sure they get it a lot, but I made sure express my gratitude to Elias for the work the front office has done when I saw him walking around MMP. Hope they can keep the core group (on the field AND upstairs) together for an extended run. Fun times at the Juice Box!! Can't wait to see if they've got another move or two for the team heading into August.... Go 'stros!!
Agreed, love the job they've done. Always agreed with the strategy. Didn't think it would take as long as it did, but we were void of talent. Dragon really hurt the minors late in his tenure. I like the model we have now. It's has sustainability!
