Not sure Onuaku is worth signing to a 10 day at this point. He game needs much more seasoning.

Yeah he dodged several bullets. Hopefully he can trade Brewer some time soon.

Well, in that case, just don't sign him. We retain his draft rights for at least two years (since he was a sophmore), or for however long (plus 1yr) he plays pro outside the NBA (including DLeague, I believe).

In other words, Morey can play hardball with him, and force him to play somewhere else, if he refuses to sign a favorable contract. But I believe Onuaku can threaten to return to Louisville, and that would end our drafts rights.

and you could kiss our relationship with young drafted players goodbye along with pissing off the NBA players union.

Correction. I think the NCAA has a rule that if you are drafted, whether you sign or not, you lose all amateur status and eligibility.

Yup once you declare for the draft you can't go back and play college ball. Otherwise students you misjudged their draft status can just come back when they get drafted too low.

I'm surprised no other team has made DMO an offer and that we would have to match.

Could we be looking at a mini Tristan Thompson scenario here? Where we don't sign DMo until the regular season has started?

    Sigh.

I know it's only July, but it feels like October. The off season sucks like that.

I think in the end D.Mo will be forced to sign what the Rockets are offering to him, assuming it's at least a decent contract so more than a MLE amount. I don't see a player with back problems bet on a one year deal and pass a 15/25 million contract (in 2 or 3 years).

If you declare for the draft, up till 10 days before the draft, you can undeclare & still retain your college eligibility. If you hire an agent, you loose your eligibility period.

Didn't CJ Miles leave himself eligible for the draft but said he would go to UT if he didn't like where he was drafted? That's how I thought it went down. Maybe the rules have changed.

    ::EDIT::

Nvm, just realized my scenario is different because it dealt with a high schooler.

Why would that surprise you given the failed Detroit trade with his back issue concerns and him averaging 6 pts and 3 boards last season. It may come down to him having to sign a very short term contract and prove that his back is healthy while showing the similar production like his 14-15 season. The Detroit Pistons and SVG did DMO no favors in screwing him over when turning down the trade after the trade deadline.

Like others have said he is going to have to sign a 1+1 prove it contract of just sign the qualifying offer (which is 5 mil by the way) ala Greg Monroe and become a unrestricted free agent next year.

That or go back to Europe.

He can only sign a 1+1 with us. So you're essentially saying he will not sign with any other NBA team. Not sure why that would be the case.

it isn't only DMO. There are other good RFA who seem to not have gotten any interest.
Mo Harkless. Miles Plumlee. Tyler Zeller. (I'm not including Dion Waiters lol).
So I wouldn't say that DMO for sure will accept crumbs and no team is interested in him. Maybe those teams have made it known they will match up to an amount which is fair for each player and that's why noone has signed any offer sheet.
