I think everyone will be happy to return to the status quo... the army will say we were never a part and they have an important role. Fethullah Gulen opposed the coup. The back channels will tell Erdogan this is what happens when you act too radically and maybe he will cool it a bit. Show trials may actually yield unity... it could happen that way.

Erodogan has implemented some good reforms, and he is a key ally against the ISIS, but he also has ties to ISIS which is very odd, and his control of the media and power grabs are not very democratic.

There is a real risk he uses this coup as a pretext to consolidate more power and move even closer to dictatorial powers.

The flipside is he cracks down hard and moves further away from a secular, democratic government. Let's hope it's the former.

I think Fethullah Gulen is more dangerous than most people thoughts. It's hard to match or contest Erdogan popularity ....,maybe this will encourage him to do more of house cleaning, and I don't how radical is it to transform a state of anti religion into a true secular one where people practice freely

Nope - he has supported ISIS from the beginning. He is not a key ally against them.

how many effing times do Islamists need to take over governments for us to learn our lesson that this won't be some birth of democracy

He isn't supporting Erdogan, he's voicing support for democracy and, as geeimsobored posted, hedging his bets. The worst possible thing the President could do is openly support a coup that failed. If the coup proves successful, and that's still unknown, Obama will make "democratic noises," but change little in our relations with Turkey (while secretly breathing a sigh of relief).

Or, he could have remained silent for a few hours to insure we really know what's happening first....

He could also just say nothing, just say that he hopes for stability and no loss of life. Also, where was his support for democracy when Erdogan jailed all these journalists, took over newspapers and tv stations, just like Hitler did?

He was attempting to retain our bases in Turkey. Where has the support for democracy been in the Gulf states through the terms of several US presidents? You know better than this, ATW. Don't buy into the far-right blather that gets posted down here all the time. Obama was supposed to "take away our guns!" That was posted more times than I could count during his first election campaign, and after. Gun sales during his presidency have never been higher. Its the usual Fox News bull****, repeated by the usual knuckleheads in D&D.

Obama said what he had to. Saying nothing is not an option here. Simple as that and not hard to understand.

Anyone remember George Bush endorsing the failed coup in Venezuela?

Anyway, this coup has failed. Shame.

Erdogan managed to get his Islamist supporters out on the street.

I think lots of soldiers will be killed and Erdogan will cull the military even more.

The only way it wouldn't be over would be if they manage to shoot down his plane or kill the dictator some other way. Unlikely.
