[rQUOTEr]Turkish prime minister says attempted coup underway, calls for calm

A group within Turkey's military has attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary", Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Friday.

"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said in comments broadcast by private channel NTV.

"The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."[/rQUOTEr]

Well, the military has tanks and you don't...so there's that.

Can't say I have much sympathy for Erdogan, but this will probably not end well.

I thought Turkey was past this. I guess old habits are hard to break. This is bad news for the Turkish economy. Even if you don't like Erdogan, this will be a problem for the country.

If the army is involved...they probably will succeed.

The question now is...Who's leading the coup and are they friendly to the United States and NATO or not?

Yikes. I hope this ends well but the military is absolutely going to take control.

They're a military overthrowing a government that Europe and the US don't like so they'll happily say nice things to us in exchange for money and weapons. They saw how the Egyptian military could walk over the country while the US and Europe didn't flinch. We're still celebrating the Egyptian military even though the current military government has arguably been Egypt's most incompetent government in decades.

This is potentially a return to pre-AKP Turkey. Turkey has a long history of coups. Coups were practically written into the constitution for a long time as the military is supposed to be the defender of Turkey's secular constitution. While you'll probably get a more secular government, you'll also get a lot more corruption (although the AKP was starting to get pretty bad) and economic mismanagement. For all the AKP's faults (and there are many), they were firmly pro free market and were committed to reducing state management of the economy.

I am not surprised, the military ties with NATO don't get supported with an Islamic State.

Well, it's hard to know if this is a united military, a large segment, a confused segment, or just a small group who thought they had a great plan.

The Army has the power if they stand united.... but down in the ranks there may be a lot of Islamic fervor.

Why now? It was never a problem in the past for Turkey. This isn't the first time.

Maybe they just pushed the military too far with the Islamic nonsense. It was only a matter of time before they'd push back.

I don't know what the catalysts for this are but it was really strange that in the past week Turkey announced revived relations with Israel and Syria... it made no sense.

And the US funded some Peshmerga, though I learned on Reddit from a Turkish guy it was a group not associated with the PKK.

I absolutely hope this coup succeeds. Erdogan has been one of the sponsors of terrorism and fanatism.

    Told you.

    Bye Felicia!

But before you celebrate, this is going to end badly anyway. And yes of course your government is involved.
