Before I make this pick, one question: are we only evaluating players based on how they did in the NBA or just their pure basketball ability wherever they might have played in that time period? I think some of you might know where I'm going with this.
Another question--let's say I pick someone like Rick Barry. He played in the 79-80 season for Houston, but he was not all that great. But he had a hall of fame career. Would I get the prime Rick Barry or the Rocket Rick Barry?
NBA play, hard to judge especially due to competition level, etc. Although voters have their own opinions which wouldn't matter what we set the rule to. If you want him go for him, Somebody else will pick him up I promise you that. Rick Barry would not be eligible as he did not play in the 1980-81 season which is our starting point. Also, assuming that somehow you could pick Rick Barry, you would get that season of Rick Barry, not prime Rick Barry. Players Prime in the time frame must match. Can't pick a player in the 80s when their prime was in the 70s and assume you'll get the 70s version. You will get the 80s version.
All right, I'm still going to go with him then, because even at age 31 and on, he was top NBA player and was a tremendous impact on both ends of the court. Top ten in win shares in the NBA for five straight years from age 31 and on. Incredible.
