Was awesome to get a look and hear Bregman. This guy knows he's a stud & is doing everything he possibly to can to make it impossible for Luhnow to not call him up
At some point with prospects, it's just damn the torpedos and full speed ahead. Each additional day he spends at Triple A is diminishing value to the Astros. Either he needs to be up playing every day for the Astros or part of a package with Reed to get Tehran and Freeman.
Eh...it's more a matter of giving him reps at 3B. No need to rush that aspect of his development. He's had, what, 20 pro games at 3B? Disagree that were diminishing his value.
does the front office know he is in the astros' farm system? But as much as I want to see him up, patience is always important with the kids. Kemp was supposed to replace that bum altuve, his fans turned on him. Reed was supposed to be god sent, radio people are now dismissing him. give them all some time to find themselves.
Reed is going through the adjustment process. Bregman will likely require that as well... people are getting antsy because it doesn't seem like (so far) that at AAA will present anything new to his development. If anything, he's seeming to become very power-happy, which was not his MO when he was drafted #2 overall (not that its a bad thing... you just hope that its purely part of his improvement, and doesn't change the other quality aspects of his plate approach).
When Kemp was getting most of his draft hoopla, Altuve was rocking a very bum-like RC+ of 84. I think more credit should be placed on Altuve's dramatic improvement in the majors than discredit to Kemp.
Anyone think Jason Martin is shooting up our prospect list? Earlier in the year he was only hitting in Lancaster and seemed like another guy with inflated stats at home. He now has a .830 OPS in Away games (1.035 OPS in home games). He has 16 HR's (15 against RHP). He can only hit RHP it looks like as his splits are mind blowing against lefties. Good to see more depth from unexpected places. He is also only 20 years old. 21 in September. Will be interesting to see how he handles AA later this year and/or next year. He is listed as a CF but I am not sure if he can stick there or not?
If he is able to put up good numbers in CC he will get some attention, but the simple fact is prospects are graded on projected MLB tools much moreso than minor league results. Aside from his age, there really isn't anything noteworthy about him. .269 hitter in the minors, so not a great hit tool. He demonstrated minimal power before California, so until he does it elsewhere people aren't gonna buy it. He has solid speed, and he's a solid fielder, but again nothing eye popping. The good thing for him is that sports are the ultimate meritocracy, so he will get his chance if he keeps playing well. I just don't think he will ever get much top prospect fanfare.
He's probably going to have to hit in CC before prospect writers start to move him up. Scouts were saying he wasn't projecting as an MLB CF before the season defensively. Granted, they said that about Fisher before the season, but word is Fisher has improved a bunch there this season.
[rQUOTEr]• I asked a scout what stood out most to him at the Futures Game and he responded immediately: "(Alex) Bregman is ready." Another said: "I thought what he did on both sides of the ball showed that he won't be long." Bregman, drafted No. 2 overall by the Astros in 2015, hit a triple, double and single in his first three at-bats. He started at third base, his likely position in Houston, then moved to his natural shortstop position in the sixth inning. The surging Luis Valbuena currently is at third for the Astros but could move to first with A.J. Reed becoming the DH and Evan Gattis serving as a right-handed alternative to Reed and Jason Castro at catcher. http://tinyurl.com/zsbs5wp[/rQUOTEr]
