People with mental illness getting killed by police officers: 62% white and 16% black
People without mental illness killed by police officers: 46% white and 30% black
People without mental illness killed while unarmed and not attacking: 37% white and 35% black

To understand why blacks getting killed by cops is national news, one needs to look at the proportionality of it.

Why would it? Are Asians less likely to have an irrational fear of black people than white people?

 

You would think so, there is a history in our country of oppression of Asian immigrants, so you would think there would be natural empathy for another minority.

 

Yes I am sure the vast majority of cases are correct.

That does not mean there is not bias and that in some cases they are not correct. And there are enough incidents to say there needs to be change in the system.

 

Are you arguing that black americans proportionally to their population % commit the same amount of violent crimes as other races in America?

 

I don't think the oppression you're referring to is part of the consciousness of most Asian Americans today. East Asians have to deal with stereotypes, but not with being treated by default as a potentially violent criminal. So I don't see any reason for such empathy to be more prevalent among them.

I'm pretty sure you wrote something similar after the Walter Scott murder. In fact, my degenerate gambling side raised an eyebrow and made a mental note of it because it was along the lines of "I'll bet a million dollars that this cop will never get prosecuted." My mind is mostly mush nowadays, but I'm always ready to pull the trigger on a juicy wager when people claim outlandish things but don't back them up.

This Minnesota cop will be charged in my worthless gambler's opinion. It's almost as clear to me as Walter Scott's killer.

As for white guys, I just watched an independent lens documentary about the Utah founder of SWAT's son-in-law being killed by SWAT and it being shady and nothing came of it. In fact, in Utah, police kill more than criminals, iirc from the doc...and Utah is very white. Anyhow, great doc series in general: http://www.pbs.org/show/independent-lens/

Edit: The referenced Walter Scott statement was not wager and just an opinion about little jail time. Still a ridiculous statement imo, but we'll have to wait and see.

 

Was looking at this earlier. Very interesting statistics. Fits the narrative that cops are more jumpy around blacks than whites due to stereotyping. I also wouldn't be surprised if cops are more on guard around men than women.

And in the last asterisk we're talking about roughly 17 blacks? We're also starting to get down to statistically insignificant number. You can actually go through and read one brief details about those 17 cases (very few, if any of them are a guy just walking down the street getting shot, but there do seem to be a few accidental shootings).

If you filter by unarmed and undetermined threat level, you get 4 cases of blacks being shot by police. And of those, one was the women who's boyfriend decided to start shooting at cops with their 4 month old son in the car. Cops returned fire and the women was killed...luckily the baby was unharmed.

This case of the Minnesota man seems to be one of the worst cases, even though there still aren't many details released. I still feel like the South Carolina shooting was worse. This one seems to be the cop being overly jumpy. The South Carolina cop was not in any immediate danger (imagined or not) and shot like 8 times? I don't think its gone to court yet, but that will finally be a case where there is just very little grey area to be argued...will be interesting to see what happens.

 

RocketsLegend do you only come to ignite flames? I don't recall even one post offering condolence or prayers to victims of such crimes. The only time you come to return is to undermine this man's character or what happened.
