911 call that a man in red shirt, selling CDs, pointed a gun at someone and now has it in his back pocket. The 911 operators direct quote: "He pulled the gun on the complainant and told him he couldn’t be around there."
They were called out there because someone called saying he was pointing his gun at them. They would have arrested him anyway because he had a warrant out for his arrest for failure to register as a sex offender and as a felon it was illegal for him to carry a handgun. He was looking at 10-20 years hard labor once convicted. LOL sure thing. Fight the power, the man is holding your down and all that nonsense.
Can understand playing devil's advocate but of the battles to pick for cops being good guys most of the time, this isn't one of the cases.
I just watched the video. First off, in cases like this, we need to collect all the facts. What we saw was a partial video and we don't have all the important context. Period. What was clear was that the guy in the red shirt was resisting. You never should resist the police. What good can possibly come of that? What we don't know was whether the policemens' lives were in danger - the angle wasn't conclusive, and we don't have the important context leading up to this.
I agree with what all you said. Except, how is it clear that he was resisting? He looked to be standing still, they tackled him to the ground, I didn't see him moving at all, and then I hear the shots. What details from the video am I missing?
It's justified in their minds.. cops were smart, they knew Blacks run fast to escape...,so kill them first is a preventive condition
I'll want to see the surveillance video to see the whole incident but what you see in the videos happens AFTER the cops use their taser on him and it's ineffective. Someone who has been in jail and prison as much as this guy has knows the routine, you give the cops control of your hands and let them cuff you, he was fighting them......most likely because he knew how long he was about to go to prison after getting caught with that weapon.
The guy in the red shirt had to be tased and then police had to tackle him to get him down. It's clear he was resisting. Check the video on cnn.com now - I believe it's newly released.
I didn't find any video on cnn.com showing him resisting. And you seem to be assuming that him being tased and tackled to the ground must have been justified on the police's part. I'll wait for more evidence to surface before coming to that conclusion.
The guy has been arrested numerous times in the past and spent 5 years in prison.....he knows what the cops want from you when you are being arrested and he wasn't doing those things even after being hit with the taser. He really was resisting arrest, likely because of how long he knew he was going down for.
Can you point me to some article explaining his past crimes? What I found (from a CNN article) was this: http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/06/us/baton-rouge-shooting-alton-sterling/index.html [rquoter]In 2009, he was charged with carrying a weapon (a firearm) while in possession of a controlled substance (mar1juana). He pleaded guilty two years later and was sentenced to five years in prison, with credit for time served and a recommendation of work release and drug treatment. Sterling had pleaded guilty to other charges in the past. There's no evidence that officers who responded to the convenience store early Tuesday were aware of his criminal history. [/rquoter] 5 year prison sentence for possession of mar1juana and a gun. Hmmm. And, it says that he was respected in the local community, obviously had a good relationship with the store owner. So, from that, I don't get the impression that this is a particularly dangerous individual.
Honest question if the cops knew he had a gun on him shouldn't that be the first thing they take off him when trying to arrest him? Also if someone is being difficult isn't it easier for a trained professional to take out his legs if you are gonna shoot instead of just going for the kill shot?
Not ready to jump on the "but cops are all cold blooded killers" wagon. For once I agree with texxx, lets wait for more evidence.
What I don't get is if he had a gun and they yelled he had a gun - how did they know that if it was in his pocket. And if he took it out so they could yell "he has a gun" how did it get back into his pocket before they shot him?
I've read it in several places but I did a quick google search for you and here's the first thing it came back with http://heavy.com/news/2016/07/alton...ke-shot-charges-video-youtube-facebook-watch/ He had been arrested and imprisoned multiple times for all sorts of different reasons.
The most interesting thing in there is that the first time he got arrested while carrying a gun he made the cops wrestle with him so resisting arrest when he's about to get serious time is something that he just does I guess.
