I worked with special ed kids for a few years. You should know that they demonstrate more decency than you do. Maybe you should volunteer somewhere?

Cherry picking? I think you gave three examples and I picked your most extreme. You act like I picked 1 out of 10,000....

Science for knowledge is great. Science for power is not.

Even an umbrella, I suppose. I have no problem with wanting to stem the tide of natural selection, but MOST abortion choices have NOTHING to do with that, do they?

While ignoring the others since they went against your thinking. S'ok, it's just how you operate. Pick one or two things, ignore the rest, toss out five or six other "arguments" and hope nobody notices. It's been your MO for years.

Knowledge is power. It's disingenuous to think otherwise.

Wait, didn't you just say "You can't really stem the tide of natural selection." today at 5:37 PM? Less than an hour before making this statement? Which is it? Can you or can't you? You're all for it now? Since most abortions don't, does that mean that up to 49% do? Interesting!

Are you kidding? Here's what you wrote: "It's not a baby until it pops out. Before that it might be a viable fetus, capable of surviving on its own, or it might be a single cell. You see those as the same thing for some reason that most learned people find baffling."

I gave you credit for throwing out three options, when you only went with two and you accuse me of cherry picking? Holy ****, you have got to be kidding me!

I can appreciate that there are differences between a single cell that exists for, what, a few minutes and completely escapes our notice in the human body and a 7-month old fetus. But that is not really the issue.

The issue is about respecting the process of life. Left alone by natural selection and human intervention that single cell will grow into a stage that is scientifically recognized as a fetus and then be born into this world.

Of course it is, I should have written my thoughts more completely. Abuse of knowledge is abuse of power says it better.

I've never dithered on the power of natural selection. We can win battles but it is an ongoing war. The use of an umbrella to avoid catching a cold in the rain and succumbing to pneumonia is but a silly example of battling natural selection, but that is in fact what a choice of umbrella is.

I just refuse to categorize baser human motives as part of the natural selection process.

Natural selection works to make things better, stronger. Abortion by election, at best, contributes to that end haphazardly and so does not fit if you are honest about it...

It's the heart of the issue.

And when that happens it's a baby. Until then it's a fetus. One that can be aborted with extreme prejudice! I will grant that if it's viable and not totally parasitic then we should let it move on. Until then? Nah.

That's simply denial. Our baser human motives drive human evolution every day. Sure, we can try to overcome some of them, but they still shape who we are and who we are becoming if you are honest about it...

Eh, it's not that haphazard. Nearly 70 percent of abortions are for women who make 200 percent or less of the federal poverty line according to the Guttmacher institute. That seems like selection of a sort to me, if I'm being honest.

Which is why abortion is awesome. I mean, if you forced poor people to kill their young for the betterment of society, you would be called a monster, if you merely encourage it and make it easy for them to do so on their own you are called a women's rights activist. I'm a huge women's rights activist.

This post is dripping with irony and utterly shows the hypocrisy of liberals I am not sure if the original poster meant to do that or not. I will assume he did since he regularly owns liberals in the D & D. Bobby, you have been repped!!!!

If I introduced an abortifacient into the water supply of a city, effectively terminating the pregnancy of every pregnant woman therein, would I have committed a crime? If so, what, and why?

"Natural selection is the process by which species adapt to their environment. Natural selection leads to evolutionary change when individuals with certain characteristics have a greater survival or reproductive rate than other individuals in a population and pass on these inheritable genetic characteristics to their offspring. Simply put, natural selection is a consistent difference in survival and reproduction between different genotypes, or even different genes, in what we could call reproductive success. [A genotype is a group of organisms sharing a specific genetic makeup.]"

Not a word about income or lifestyle; it's all about the fitness of the individual who, in the case of aborted baby, is not even allowed to demonstrate her fitness.

Where did you copy-paste that from? A genotype is not a group of organisms sharing a specific genetic makeup. A genotype is a single organism's genetic makeup. Even "identical" twins/triplets/etc. have small mutations that make them non-identical and thus not sharing a genotype. You really should check your sources as it hurts your credibility. And do people not cite anymore? Shame. It's also funny that your single, un-cited source doesn't mention income or lifestyle. Nice research there, slick.

Even the natural selection definition is a bit dodgy. The whole "species adapt to their environment" bit is pretty off. Natural selection changes allele frequencies in a population due to differential survival and reproduction of individuals. The causes for that differential survival are reproduction are usually (some chance events can also happen) based on genetic factors.

You don't think income or lifestyle are at least partially genetic in nature? Interesting. A twin study with ~800 sets of twins done by Edinburgh University a few years ago focused on personality traits that contribute to the chances of success in life by influencing things like how determined we are to overcome challenges. Their study showed that genetics were influential on people's sense of self-control and also affected their social and learning abilities and their sense of purpose.

Seems like that could most certainly affect income and lifestyle. Even if the genetic component is small, it's still enough to be selected for/against.

Bobby liberal? Man you have gone off the semantic deep end. Everything you think is the right way is conservative and everything not that way is liberal. real life opinions are lot more messy and nuanced than that. If fact, conservatism should just denote the maintenance of the status quo and minimize the role of government in any action of individual choice.

Bobby is a eugenicist, it's a radical notion only institutionally imposed by ancient societies that did not have the luxury to support weakness... and Nazis. Was Sparta liberal or conservative?

As science make eugenics more attainable and humane I would be for it, and for population controls. At some point all systems reach their maximum sustainability with disastrous effects. What's the number for this planet?

There is already a 500 page thread about abortion with Giddy. Continuing that discussion here is pointless. This thread is more about the recent Supreme Court decision on LAW. Political pressures from opinions certainly have some influence on that but there is no need to re-hash the opinions. No one would condone killing babies and it all comes down to the same definition of when life begins. The hyperbole of "killing babies" is not generally accepted by medicine or law only by theology and we are not a theocracy so let's move on.

    1. Abortion does not even give the kid a chance at life not to mention surviving or reproducing. Abortion takes it of the table for that little girl.

    2. All kinds of people come from nowhere if given the chance. And anyway, its about survival not success. Is this a women's health issue or social engineering?!

    3. Are these really the kind of considerations that most people have when choosing abortion? They are not thinking about the kid but themselves because adoption is always an option-- even adoption for profit.

So, people choosing to bring a fetus to term have "no decision to make," but people who would choose abortion shouldn't make that choice.

Blame conservatives, they're the ones who have promoted selfishness as a virtue.

Legislating that a woman must bring a fetus to term and bear it isn't "better," it is dramatically worse. Government intrusion of the highest order.

It is only "someone" in your opinion.

No, "dead innocent babies" deserve a lot of empathy. Fetuses, not so much.

It isn't my fault you don't have the ability to appreciate a holistic view of God's plan.

Is it just me or does it not make a bit of difference? You have no right to legislate what a woman should or should not do with her uterus.

Yes, it is a "life," but that is merely your opinion.

You may want to reread my post. I did not say Bobby was liberal. In fact I said he usually owns them.

7 supreme court justices fast-tracked the death of more than 50,000,000 innocent children that should have been loved and protected by parents-- natural or adoptive. This is a stain on our national character.

If they had loving or protective parents, then they would be born. That's the beauty of abortion, very few kids with an actual future are aborted, the overwhelming majority are future criminals or wards of the state. It's win-win

Trying to have a "discussion" about abortion with Giddy is a complete waste of time, but have at it, people. Meanwhile, the topic can continue to go down the toilet.

Why? Because I don't cave? Why is it more difficult to have it with me than with any of these other regulars who never change their positions one iota? Quit demonizing the opponent. I expect more of an old hippie... ;)
