The Purge - 3/5 The Purge: Anarchy - 4/5 The Purge: Election Year - 1/5 This movie sucked ass. The writing was like a Euro-made downside of his career Van Damme movie. RT had it like 63% last night (56% now) when I decided to go with a bunch of critics enjoying the social commentary....they're f'n morons. The Purge: Anarchy had a fair amount of social commentary too, but what made it great was the action, the sense of danger, and the creative ways people died and avoided death in a cat-and-mouse type movie. The Purge: Election Year was the most boring, uncreative, action-horror movie I've seen in a long time. There was no sense of danger for the main characters at all.
I am highly disappointed in this review. I didn't catch the first one until after seeing the second in the theaters. I thought the sequel was a really, really good movie. First one, eh it was ok. To hear that the third is by far the worst of the 3 is very saddening. I had planned on seeing it sometime this weekend, will take a step back and see what everyone is saying.
That's disappointing to hear, 2nd one was WAY better than the first, I wanted to punch that kid for letting the homeless man in Frank Grillo is way underrated and a badass, would have loved to see him in an expanded Crossbones role but that was too much to ask I'll probably still see it this weekend, but watching Swiss Army Man tonight
Just walked out the theatre. I spent a good 75% of the movie following the NBA free agency. The parts I did watch were really horrible. All that mess for a candy bar? Really? Writers couldn't come up with something better?
Uh, no. The first was mediocre, the second was just garbage. I'm guessing the third is probably even worse.
Disagree on the second being worse than the first. Out there on the streets with people everywhere looking to kill you was a lot more entertaining than a family in their house r****dedly allowing a homeless man inside and then not having enough security (although you'd think they'd have a ton with the auto locks, monitors ect) to keep the crazies out. I'm hearing nothing but hot garbage for the third though, will likely skip.
i enjoyed it. pretty entertaining, id give it a 6.5/10. there was two 400 lb neckbeards sitting next to me that wouldn't shut he hell up though which pissed me off
There are opportunities to be had in future films including: The Purge: Logan's Run The Purge: Soylent Green The Purge: Election Year sounds about as interesting as watching Donald "Duck" Trump's orange pubic head hair flop around in the wind while he explains how he is going to fix things without any details. You know it's bad if they have to try to capitalize on the hype of an election year. We should purge anyone associated with the making of this movie...those sons of b****es!
I thought the homeless dude is the one who saved the day (the Black guy) or maybe that wasn't until the second one.
If you thought that of the first, why on earth did you watch the second? Don't tell us you went to the third.
EXACTLY! I thought this movie was easily one of the worst I've seen in a long time. I never saw the first 2 so I had nothing really to base it on, but I'm certainly not watching them after this steaming pile of crap. Yep, let me risk my life for a candy bar after I've already been shot by the guy that knows I'm coming. Apparently when there's a purge everyone goes out thinking they're invincible...nah, you can be killed too geniuses ...just stupid. The whole movie had a really silly premise and too many situations that were created to force the plot to move along while trying to remain interesting...it failed in that respect.
Well I went and saw it early yesterday afternoon knowing I'd likely be disappointed but I love Studio Movie Grill. It wasn't as bad as I was anticipating, still think the first one is the worst of the three. Spoilers: Right on the money with the girl wanting her candy bar. I looked over to my friend when they got out of the car, you knew it was her before taking the mask off. Then, instead of having the higher ground and picking them all off with ease, they yell at them to leave. No, this is 20+ years into the yearly purge, if there is one thing you know by now is that you can be shot from anywhere at any moment. Instead of talking, you start shooting, every one of those kids should and would have been dead within seconds. Guy was willing to risk his life to save the deli, knowing they'd be back he knew he'd have to die or kill them to save it. Why wait for them to come back?! Just shoot their asses already. There was no way Joe and Marcos knew that was the senator laying on the street there, they were completely surrounded by the foreign crazies and there was a considerable distance between them. What the hell was up with the Laney character. There was no character background story other than the girls at the beginning saying she was some kind of OG. Then when she shows up and mows over the kids and shoots a couple of them she states emphatically that she's back. Who the hell is she and why does a single person give a single fukkk that she's back? I know the statement was made in a way to generate a reaction from the audience but the theater was almost 100% full and not one, single person reacted to that line at all. No one in the audience cared when Joe died, his character development and backstory was nonexistent. Even with all of that, I'd still rate the series Purge: 2/10 Purge Anarchy: 7.5/10 Purge Election Year: 4/10
The first one sucked. They took an intriguing, albeit kind of stupid, premise and turned it into a home invasion story. The second one wasn't great but at least delivered on the promise of people being stuck out on the streets during the purge. I figured that would be the high point for the series, though it's possible someone could do something really cool with the concept. So it's best was a watchable mediocre movie.
