Randy Johnson isn't one, neither is Beltran, nor Pettitte nor Kemp. You could go back to the idiotic Padres trade I guess, but they weren't FAs, they were just future FAs.
If I recall correctly, there was info that said the Astros were willing to go much higher. Off the top of my head, I remember something like $104M? But whatever the # was, it was still 10-15% lower than the Mets' offer, so they never actually made the offer. Am I misremembering any of that?
Rumors of that, rumors of a no trade clause being an issue. Bottom line is that if he really wanted to stay here, they'd have found a way to make it work. I'm guessing the Astros felt they were being used as leverage (which they were), and unless they were going to significantly overpay and come with the highest overall offer, it wasn't going to happen.
Yep...was just looking at his stats in awe. MLB leader in average, OBP, and runs created. Third in OPS. Clearly the Astros best position player season (thus far) since Berkman. Will be the front runner for MVP at the all-star break.
And to back up that glorious OPS. His outside the zone swing% is down 8% from his recent seasons, and his strike swing% is basically the same. He's not taking more strikes, he's just swinging at less balls. So in turn his LD%, and hard hit% are easily the highest of his career, and his soft contact rate is at his lowest. And to top that off, he is walking more than he is striking out. He has one significant issue as a hitter, he often gave away at bats by swinging at poor pitches, and he's not doing that very often now. If he maintains this approach he's gonna be a super elite player moving forward, because his natural bat to ball talent is off the charts.
If he continuous his pace he will probably have the greatest season for a 2B not named Roger Hornsby,
IDK, Mike Trout and Many Machado will be popular choices. Poor Mike Trout will probably lead the AL in WAR once again, and lose the MVP because his team sucks.
If you're going to win it on a losing team in baseball... you have to have a season so far and away greater than the rest of the field for it to happen. Trout is the AL leader in WAR... Altuve 2nd. As of now, he's got a slight edge on Machado in all major metrics...except for team wins (something that is trending in the right direction).
Yeah, it's no fluke. This guy is turning into one of the top two or three players in franchise history right before our eyes.
It's got to be a foregone conclusion that he is the June Player of the Month - right? .420 average, 42 hits, 6 doubles, a triple and 4 HRs. .420/.492/.620/1.112, 19 R, 15 RBI and 6 SB. 13 walks, only 10 Ks.
