My friend, please post your opinion of this subject in a more appropriate thread ... The Astros "What Needs to be Done" Thread
But those guys are the required depth/filler in an emergency situation of multiple excessive injuries at the big league level.
Jake Rogers is at Tri Cities, and he's gonna be an interesting one to follow. While awesome defensive catcher isn't a sexy scouting report, if he shows any offensive competency whatsoever I think there's a good chance he could be fast tracked. His defense means he likely has high floor, and the organizational depth chart isn't great to say the least. He walked quite a bit this year, and he's already walked 5 times in 4 games, so I think he may be able to Nolan Fontana his way through the low minors. I think they are gonna want him in AA sooner rather than later.
I'd figure the other way around. He needs to prove his bat at every level. He could use the additional instructions the lower levels provide. No one is questioning his defense right now.
Offense is a quicker learn, but there is definitely no reason to promote him if he is being overmatched. We have Pena and Gonzalez doing that already.
Rogers could be in for a huge breakout next year if he is placed in Lancaster. With his defensive reputation, a couple of 800 OpS months in the Cali league and he will be touted as one of the best catching prospects in the game. I think no matter what he shouldn't be rushed to AA next season at all. Let him experience some success.
If we are ever using Peacock at the Major league level not only did something go terribly wrong, Luhnow also would have done a horrible job of not finding someone in a trade Sorry man, Peacock serves no purpose at this point
There are pitchers that have had to start games for contenders with 6.00+ ERAs this season. There is one team with a healthy bank account and prospects that has 27 starts, 135 innings from its 4th-9th SPs that has a combined ERA well over 6.00 with only one having an ERA under 6 (5.11 in 12 innings). Peacock at his worse has a 5.40 ERA. This team also has more wins than the Astros...if this team can't even get Peacock level production from its 4th starter...I would say your bar of what to expect from the Astros 10+ starter may be a little unreasonable.
yes, but here is about minor leagues, and i say we need to bring Reed to the majors, a guy that is hitting at Triple A, if not, use Kemp. If we are not going to use Kemp, then send him to "the minors"
My expectations of a 10th or 11th starter....are that if we lost our entire rotation, giving starts to Peacock isn't going to magically get us into the playoffs. You really think we could be ok if we lost our entire rotation ?
In his first at-bat of the season, Miguelangel Sierra tripled, and he scored Greeneville's first run of the season on a sac fly from Luis Payano.
Strawman argument. It does not take entire rotation to get injured to get to 10th starter. Peacock was 13th in starts for the Astros last season and it didn't stop the Astros from making the playoffs. A lot of teams use 10 starters in a season and make the playoffs. Without checking, I'd say about half of the playoff teams lately use 10 or more starters.
Have to agree to disagree I suppose. It actually would take them all getting hurt, or a few of them and a few guys in line behind them at the same time Keuchel, McHugh, McCullers, Fister, Fiers, Feldman, Devenski, Musgrove, Rodgers all guys I would rather have start before Peacock I get the whole idea of keeping guys around "just in case". Every organization does it, I just don't see Peacock as a guy worth keeping around for that, we just disagree on his value I suppose
