The only way they would trade is to a team also in contention with a surplus of pitching but needing a 3rd baseman (maybe the Mets). The only other scenarios would be a collapse between now and August or they could be concerned he'd take the QO like Rasmus and negate the draft pick return they'd get.
Ok, let us tell the holes on the team to our GM: DH, 1B, one more left handed reliever (loogy) I like Marwin, but as a utility, not as my starting first basemen. I also like Valbuena, but for 450-500 at bats, not 650-700 We can fix our DH/1b with one player, Reed.
Not that it's not a positive thing that Wrenn and Dawson are doing well in A-short season but it's pretty expected. Successful high-level college players shouldn't really be tested until high-A/AA. Wrenn in particular came from UGA; high-level SEC baseball is probably equivalent to high-A. Teams like Vandy have way more high-level prospects than most single A teams.
I don't really take into account the results too much until they get to the upper levels. More talking about their tools in general.
We may be talking about 2 slightly different things, but the best college team in the country would get their ass kicked by a good high-A team. Also Wrenn in particular had a down year because he broke his face right before the season started, that's why he slipped to the 6th.
Probably. That's mostly due to the 6th-25th men on a high A team are far superior talent and experience wise to those same guys on the college team. Flip side, the top 5 five guys on a strong college team might be as good as the top 5 guys on a single A team. For example, Vandy had 3 guys go in the top 60 picks this year. The Astros Quad Cities affiliate definitely can't match that level of top talent.
I'm pretty sure the mlb list is the same as it was in the preseason except they get rid of people that lose eligibility and then add guys that barely missed the Top 100 to the end of the list to keep it at 100. Paulino and Musgrove must have just both missed the Top 100 preseason as they've both been added recently.
yep. that's basically it. They will do their updated one midseason so we will see who makes the list.
Funny thing about college teams...you don't get to set up your rotation for every weekend in the pros.

Juan Minaya was claimed off waivers by the White Sox. What the hell?! I figured that the Astros could at least get SOMETHING for him. Some lottery ticket low-A prospect. Maybe just cash. But something. I get that teams with good, deep farm systems will lose decent prospects from time to time. But to lose a top-30 prospect for nothing when we still have one of the better farm systems in baseball? I'm mildly disappointed by this.
Agree, and Fontana is another one that should not be in 40 men roster. Singleton, what are we going to do with him? He is hitting .203 with 5 doubles!!!!!! He is getting walks and 14 homers!!!!!!!!!
This is where i am in disagreement with Luthnow. He does not have a problem with the lineup right now, and i say, we need ONE more bat. We need a DH against right handed pitchers. You know what? I think we have that with Kemp, but Hinch does not use him. Like last year when he used Gattis so much even tough he was below average DH, he continues to do the same this year. Gattis is hitting very good against lefties, but struggling big time vs righties. (.183 with .620 OPS). So Gattis will help this team a lot as a backup catcher against left handed pitcher and a very good pinch hitter vs lefties at the end of games. So what should we do with our DH spot? Two things, or bring Reed to the majors OR use Kemp and hit him 9th vs right handed pitchers. Kemp is hitting .270 with .349 OBP and .745 OPS vs righties. Hinch, you have the horses, DH with Kemp or bring Reed to the majors, and use Gattis as backup catcher and pinch hitter deluxe at the end of games vs lefties.
He was basically a fringe Top 30 prospect that wasn't good enough for the majors, but needed to be on a 40-man if traded. If he didn't need to be on 40-man, he might have been able to be traded, but he's just not worth it for a team to cut a guy on the 40-man plus whatever is required in the trade.
