no, gsw's game isnt just built on the 3's. so op's premise was off.

but i agree that d'antoni hire was the worst. :)

I wonder why people are so blind to this.

OP talks about how you can't live by the 3, yet CLE basically won the title off a 1v1 Irving 3.

Sure, Curry and Thompson could have done the same thing (and didn't), but this thread wouldn't even exist if GSW had made a 3, instead of Irving.

What if CLE had lost? Would the OP create a thread titled "The Cavs loss shows why you cannot build a consistent contending team with LeBron?" I mean, idgi.

From Barkley on down, everyone pointed out that the way to beat GSW was with size. OKC actually figured out the way to implement this strategy and should have won that series but fell short in the execution when they decided to play small ball with GS. Cle used their template and sealed the deal because they used their size to its fullest advantage. They attacked the rim, used their size to challenge the GS jump shooters and clogged the paint relentlessly during the last 3 games thereby forcing GS to either match them with size (which they couldn't especially after Bogut went down) or beat them with the 3 pointer. The irony is had Curry and Thompson simply hit their shots, GS would be partying with the trophy right now so I'm not sure what point the OP is trying to make.

If the GS brain trust is paying attention (and I'm certain that they saw the same things I saw), they will acknowledge the need for more effective size at the 3, 4 & 5 spots and they should be right back in the mix in 2017. It will also help to have a healthy Curry, Bogut and Co. as well.

As far as D'Antoni, this means nothing because he will most likely implement his offense first system with its reliance on speed and the 3 point shot with James Harden playing the role of Steve Nash. I don't expect to see the Rockets under D'Antoni putting out the level of defensive effort that Cle did to win the title. That's simply not what his teams are about.

All this proves is that Lebron is really really good. And that for the next 3-4 yrs, all roads to championship still go through him.

It was even more fundamental than that. GS has two glaring weaknesses: Curry defense on the perimeter and Barnes' 3 point shooting in the playoffs. Pretty much every play in that fourth quarter had Lebron or Irving getting a pick to get Curry on them. On defense the rotation was set to force Barnes to shoot (or what really ended up happening after Barnes became guy shy, forcing a 3 under pressure). The game plan worked perfectly when it was needed. A lot of credit goes to Lebron and the coaching staff.

If GS makes a few more threes they win.

I think you're confusing bad defense with great offense.

Actually, OKC was most effective vs GS when they went small. Their best +/- for the series was by the lineup of Durant-Ibaka-Roberson-Waiters-Westbrook.

In the two blowout wins in games 3 & 4, it was that small lineup that did the damage. In game #3, that lineup was +30 (next best was +6) and in game #4 it was +26 (next best +3).

Back to back finals in the West would be consistent enough for me. But hey, guess your standards are higher.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How so? Kyrie and Lebron made the shots when they counted, sure. But the small ball that GS plays demands that they switch everything on offense. By switching and making the poorest defender handle the initial drive that freed up opportunities for Lebron and Kyrie. It was exposing a weakness, instead of playing right into the teeth of the defense like most teams do.

Curry wasn't playing bad defense. Irving was simply making difficult shots.

yup. it was obvious from game 5 on that the game plan was to get the switch for Lebron/Irving to get the matchup they want. Whether it was Curry or a Ezeli/Varejao/Speights. Then from there attack and read the defense on how they are responding. A few times, it didnt work well with missed shots and turnovers but overall it proved as an effective gameplan as it got others open shots bc of the help. Or just great plays made by Lebron/Irving individually. And no matter the runs they did a good job of sticking with this even they were down.

3 point shot has always been live/die by the sword. Frankly between their championship, the record breaking season and probably whatever they do next season the Warriors will have consistently lived pretty well.

This series (and the GSW/OKC series) showed me that you need multiple stars on a team to win, and that your 4/5's need quick feet to defend on the perimeter (Adams / Ibaka / Thompson). No slow footed 4/5s. And wingman with length and speed are crucial. Having a bench. Having a "half court offense" that is not always dependent on fast breaks to generate points.

LeBron and KD at the PF position really is an X-factor that GSW had trouble solving.

Golden State didn't have a chance to attempt those 3s. They missed a couple but were so tightly guarded which should give credit to Cleveland's defense.
