http://www.milb.com/news/article.js...d=184331464&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb I am starting to get excited about Teoscar Hernandez again. I feel like Luhnow gives up too easily on players with raw tools like Villar and Santana. Not saying those guy will be or are studs but Villar is showing some worth now and is still fairly young at 25. I think you have to wait till some of these guys are 25 or so before they are close to a finish product. Taking into account all of the stuff they have improved on over the years should come into play. Being able to transform as a player in only one season like Teoscar has is very impressive. His coaches in AA are super impressed and believe he is a big leaguer. He may need another year or two to work out some more raw abilities but he has shown he can do that if given the time. Hopefully this regime will hold on to him to see what we have in the next couple of years. Guys with his potential power and speed on the bases don't grow on trees. "The first one was to straight center field," Hooks manager Rodney Linares said. "The second one, he laid off a couple of breaking balls and he got one up and he absolutely crushed it. It was a line drive, it was gone as soon as he made contact. We all know he has that in him and I'm happy for his success. They pitched him tough, knowing that he's a league leader in a lot of categories, but he's really maturing as a player. "He's been working extremely hard at not chasing pitches. We all know that Teo has big league ability. As long as he swings at strikes, he's gonna be fine. I've been happy with what I've seen from him all year." After compiling an .840 OPS in May, Hernandez has been even better this month, with a .383/.448/.600 slash line in 14 games. Three of the midseason All-Star's six homers this season have come in June, a month in which he's scored 14 runs and driven in eight. The 23-year-old outfielder is 14-for-31 (.452) in his last seven games. "He's been steady," Linares said. "Everybody was scuffling, and him and [Alex] Bregman kept us afloat. Having him leading off and that speed and also that he can hit a ball out of the park at any time, it's comforting for a manger to have that at the top of the lineup." A season after hitting .219 in 121 games for the Hooks, Hernandez leads the league with a .312 batting average and is second behind Bregman with 46 runs scored. The native of the Dominican Republic also tops the circuit with 23 stolen bases. "I think it's more of a consistency thing with recognizing spin on breaking balls," Linares said. "I think he's a big league player. Last year, it was a struggle from the beginning; he'd get himself out so many times. One thing that people don't give him credit for, being his first full year in Double-A, he also hit 17 home runs and stole more than 30 bags. "The problem with him was chasing the off-speed, and expanding the zone with two strikes was the biggest issue. He's done a great job with that [this year] and if he continues to do that, he'll not only play in the big leagues, he'll be a productive player." Considering his gaudy numbers, it's only natural to wonder what might be next for Hernandez. "For me, it's just a matter of time," Linares said. "He's well on his way for a promotion in the next couple of weeks. We have a lot of guys that are deserving. There are guys ahead of them and it's all about getting the [opportunity] to play every day. It's not only the success part but also where are they going to be better suited for playing time. I'm pretty sure it's in the brass' mind." Astros No. 11 prospect J.D. Davis homered and doubled, while Alejandro Garcia scored twice for the Hooks. Francis Martes, Houston's third-ranked prospect, improved to 4-2 after allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while fanning three over 6 1/3 innings.
Jake, last year Villar hit .284 with us with a .752 OPS, he showed what he was capable of. Now, our problem was that our "best" player plays 2b, and Correa SS, so Villar did not had a free spot, with Marwin as a very good utility. The problem i have is that we gave Villar away, instead i would had used Villar over Duffy and try to get a better player in return. The guy we got in return has allowed more hits than innings for the year, and career.
You sure use odd stats. Using your logic, last year, his first full year in the minors and the season after which they made the trade, he allowed less hits than innings pitched, so does that change any thing? It's fine that you don't like a trade, but why use such an obscure stat? In addition, over his minor league career, he has given up a whooping 4 more hits than innings pitched. He also has a 3-1 K/BB ration this season. It was obvious that the thrust of this trade was to clear roster space and with Altuve, Correa, Gonzalez and Bregman, Villar's middle infield path was clearly blocked for the foreseeable future. For all we know Sneed may become the next Dan Straily. After all, Straily gave up more hits than innings pitched in his first minor league season.
Why did you put quotes around 'best?' Are you implying altuve isn't our best player right now? Or do you just not understand the meaning of the punctuation marks?
Because, in actuality, he thinks the Astros' best players are Straily and Villar, but they are no longer on the team.
Yeah, I figured this would get derailed when I brought up Villar, my bad. It is done and at least we have something to show for it no matter how much you don't like Sneed he is not a complete waste of a prospect at this point. Anyways, my point is that we can be and should be more patient in the future to allow these raw players a little more time to see what they can do. I would also not be opposed to flipping Teoscar while his value is high (assuming someone believes in his tools). I think Luhnow is more prone to give up on tools as the numbers say a raw player with tools will never amount to anything in the majors but in the off chance that player is successful you will wish you could have kept them. Seeing a raw player continually improving on their biggest weaknesses is a good sign that the player will one day put it all together and at least contribute in the majors.
careful man, i said something very similar to that and was called a racist because of it castrated-jero is a troll anyway, not a fan
Sometimes, I just patrol threads to make sure Delgado is brought up. My faith grows stronger in this board daily. Carry on.
Good point but the reason is because I think right now he is our best player but correa has a chance of overtaking that spot Still, I think both are great and could become biggie and Bagwell, with springer becoming a lance Berkman kind of talent
Guys with his skill set, I'm not sure it matters. Within the next 2 weeks he should be on the big league roster.
