Just left CDG an hour or so ago. Security didn't seem any tighter than usual.

I read on khou that the plane made abrupt turns and immediately started descending right before disappearing.

Unfortunately, it has reached the point where you expect this to happen annually.

Just have an annual day to commiserate all the losses.

Hopefully they find the plane and there are no casualties.

Don't you think at this point if the plane was ok that people on the flight would be calling loved ones to let them know they're ok?

Its statistically the safest form of travel. That is why when one goes down it makes the news.

It crashed into the sea from 37,000 feet, per Greek authorities.

It's likely going to end up terrorism. Seems like maybe a hijacker took the plane and crashed it? Erratic flying before plunging straight down.

Aside from the UK, France had the most security I've seen in Europe. Still nowhere close to the US though.

If security was compromised at CDG, post-November and pre-Euro, this will be an insanely huge deal.

How so? To me it was a typical trip through baggage drop off, passport control and security. Security lines were relatively short. No military presence. Passport control was a bit longer than usual, but that was due to lack of workers more so than extra long checking. If more than 3 passport control windows were open, we'd have been through everything in less than 15 minutes.

Yeah that's my experience in CDG every time. They never staff enough people so lines get long but its not actually a product of some strict security. I havent been through Heathrow in about 5 years but that was no different in my experience. And they used to have much better staffing. I used to go in and out of passport control if my layover was 5+ hours. Used to be able to get in and out of the airport (including passport control) in less than 30 minutes.

Ultimately I'm not sure how much more security you can effectively add. The US has what looks like the longest security process that I've been through but the TSA is such a disaster at the moment in terms of its operations that I'm not sure its any safer than any other airport.

Even in places like Tel Aviv or Southeast Asia, I've seen plenty of people with assault rifles but the actual security experience wasn't anything unusual aside from getting my fair share of racial profiling but I've had that happen in the US as well.

I went through CDG 3 days after the Belgium attacks and the security was really tight. They had guys with machine guns waiting at the entrance to the airport from the jet bridge and checking passports before you could even get into the actual airport.

They were clearly racial profiling too. Every person of dark skin was told to go stand against the wall while every white person could show their passport and continue to passport control. And they only had 2 people working there lol. The line was about 45 min because they don't staff enough people.

This is sad news all around and from what I have read, they are thinking terrorism is at play. Makes me sick to think that is the case.

That being said, there was a big military presence (soldiers with automatic weapons) in Rome, Florence and Paris. Obviously around the landmarks, but roaming the cities as well.

So, I have a trip to Paris booked in October, landing at CDG. This stuff is making me extremely anxiety ridden.

I'm going in a few weeks. It's anxiety-inducing, but I hope that security during the Euro will be unprecedented.

I'm sure they will figure this one out once the recorders are found. I would doubt they figure it out before then. If it was terrorist in nature, then surely something will be on the cockpit voice recorder. If this is another one of those pilots who can't fly a plane in manual mode with the autopilot disengaged, then that is just f-ed in the a.
