Name one of the remaining playoff teams that dont shoot midrange and rely only on layups and corner 3? Even gsw shoots mids

Harden and Beasley shot a lot of mid range shots. This narrative is untrue. The roster just didn't have too many good mid range shooters. Sadly the roster didn't have too many good shooters in general.

Found some good examples of Vogel's offensive sets.

I love what I see in this video. Shows me their lack of offensive numbers has more to do with pace/personnel. There's great body and ball movement in all these sets, and with Harden the pace should go up. I think this is would be the right hire.

Doesn't Vogel like to run two bigs out there most of the time?

    Would that work here?

The concept is to maximize shots behind the arc and at the paint. How you maximize those is up to you. GSW does score a lot of points in the paint and behind the arc but they do so in a system that focuses on ball movement and off the ball player movement. "Moreyball" doesn't dictate how you maximize shots in the paint and 3's because it's not a real "strategy". It's just a dictum to minimize inefficient midrange shots. It's not wrong. It's just not a real blueprint as to how you do that.

True. Morey already said that he's not against a good mid range shot, and the fact that he tried to sign Aldridge is a good reason to believe this.

I'm not seeing much discussion about Indy's defensive coordinator, Dan Burke. this guys is getting all the credit for the defense and it sounds like Bird wants to keep him and just add an offensive minded coach....so what are we really getting?

By % of FG by distance, Golden State was

    2nd in 3 point attempts
    11th in 2 point attempts 0-3 feet

    Meanwhile they were 29th in 3 feet - 10 feet, 24th in 10 feet - 16 feet, and 27th from 16 feet to 3 pointer.

Of course they shoot "some" mid range shots. But your quote kind of mis-characterizes it. They definitely subscribe to 3s and close to the rim philosophy. The Spurs would have been a better team to point to, as they do take their fair share of "mid-range" shots.

If I do the same analysis for Rockets, mind you, the main difference is they really didn't like shots outside of 10 feet. Where they were 30th (dead last) in both categories (10-16 feet, 16 feet - 3 point). But unlike the Warriors they took a fair amount of shots from 3-10 feet (11th in the league). Plus, the big issue with the Rockets wasn't where they shot, but how well they did. They just aren't gifted shooters, generally.

I'm not sure what Moreyball really preaches, or analytics really preaches. Obviously, the Rockets run their style. To me, and this is more eye test than data driven, its that analytics should say open shots = the best shots. I believe I've seen hidden references to stats on this before, which note how much higher the points per possession, or ts% or whatever is when the possession ends with an "open" shot. That's why the Spurs offense works.

Whomever the Rockets hire, I hope they can find some way to institute an offense that results in that. I am fine if the result is still generally 3s, layups and FTs, but if the emphasis is on open shots, even if a mid range jumper, and the %s shift a tad bit towards more of those, I think the offensive efficiency will improve to top 5.

Larry Bird fired both Rick Carlisle and Frank Vogel. Kinda glad he's not our GM.

I like Bird's anti-McHale policies though... But yeah, how do you fire a future hall of fame coach and then a coach who gets you to the playoffs 5/6 times. The whole "not playing like GS does" garbage is an artifact of Bird's construction, not Vogel's coaching.

It does make sense that you'd want something different than GSW- otherwise you'd play right into their game (like we often did). Bird just went about it all wrong.

I like picking up Vogel. It's not like there's a whole lot of great options- everyone else is either lacking experience or washed up. Although Cassell might be a good pickup.
