Vogel is young JVG. However, JVG is aware of his weaknesses on offense and has said he would need to hire an offensive yin to his defensive yang. Is Vogel that open-minded, yet?

Agree, I think all assistant coaches need to go, fresh start.

I've provided various analysis of Vogel and his offensive system a couple days ago in another thread.

The irony of things making fun of the "Pace" portion... is the Pacers were 11th in pace this year. The Spurs, comparatively, were 24th... but still 4th in offensive rating.

There's lots of way to run good offense. The ultimate matchup of course is Spurs when healthy vs. Warriors when healthy. Both great offenses and defenses, but do it differently.

The problem with the Pacers offense is basically mid-range jumpers and nobody that proficient at getting to the foul line. They shot way more 2's than the Rockets and way less 3's even though they shot 3's at the same rate. They scored 3 fewer points a game from the line.

My complaint about Vogel offensively isn't that he's resistant to do some of the new modern age things... it's more that he doesn't really seem to rely on any "system" of sorts. Even considering what, 50%+ of all offense is just freestyle off of transition, broken plays, PnR, etc. you still have to have some sort of system. And fundamentally I think a legit SYSTEM, as opposed to a set of plays.

The Rockets have a set of plays. The Warriors run a system. The Spurs run a system. The Rockets of old days ran a system... even if it wasn't complicated and could grow boring... but it was a system that took advantage of Hakeem, spread the floor, etc.

Basically... I like Vogel as a hire. But they're going to need some serious lead assistants.

They were pretty bad the last few years.

I hope it at least stays the same, we were 8th in offense. Vogul's defense is elite for sure. Our offense is okay, we just suck at making shots.

I'm not a fan of him, sorry. We need a real coach who is both defensive and offensive minded and a natural leader for the players.

I'm not worried about his teams lack of offense. I trust that Harden can manufacture points when we need them. I just want his defense!

Why did Bird fire him? Seems his offense was bad - and Bird wanted more O.....and to hold players accountable....which he did not do.

If that is accurate no way in HELL do I want him here, Harden needs a boot in his ass coach....not another enabler

A team of great assistants that know their role is so underrated. Not only has our coach been mediocre the past couple of years, our assistants have proven to be mediocre as well. Whoever we get as head coach we need to hire a top notch assistant staff that all mesh well together.

I'd rather have JVG. That guy knows wtf he's doing.

What do you expect? His best offensive player was Paul George, who is useless when he can't hit a 3.

This reinforces my concern that he was let go for similar reasons that McHale was - trying to hard to be a player's coach and not really demanding a disciplined approach from his team, other than defense in Vogel's case. This may be a huge point of frustration that will only worsen the divide between the Harden clique and the non-Harden clique.

That article seemed like a hatchet job. The hope is that Morey and crew can suss out the truths on Vogel and see if he is a good fit for the Rockets and what they need. Because "accountability" and "culture" are key ingredients.

Bird fires everyone after a few years. It's his MO. He fired Carlisle, who was practically his best friend.
