McHale for Vogel is like Larry Andersen for Jeff Bagwell.

Sounds like he would philosophically clash with Moreyball.

Maybe Mchale becomes new coach under his best buddy Larry Bird.

If we don't get JVG, Frank Vogel is a great 2nd choice. Dude knows his X and Os and is defensive minded, exactly what Harden and the team needs. He's also ok with analytics so it should be no problem creating synergy with Morey.

It's time for a new voice around here.

It's necessary for these guys to hear a new voice. It's tough. Frank's not getting fired. His contract is up. I've decided not to renew it. There will be interest out there. He'll be fine. I wish him the best.

I brought Frank in with no HC experience. I expect guys to be professional, out in the community, hold them accountable, play hard, play together, respect one another. Coach we bring in will have all the qualities to be a good leader.

    Team tune out Frank?

I don't know about losing the locker room. I wouldn't go that far. My experience has been good coaches leave after 3 years. ... Look around the league. Guys are being dismissed and you wonder why. Frank never lost the locker room. At times, players don't listen. You gotta keep them focused. If you have a new voice, you hold their attention longer.

If someone calls on Frank, what will you say?

He's the best. He's been in our community. Great man, great leader. He will do fine. He's looking forward to the next opportunity.

    New coach?

I'd like to score more points. Hopefully we can do that. Our D has been great with Dan Burke. It's all about scoring points. You'd like to score as many as you can.

    Nate McMillan?

I have a list of guys. This decision just came down. All-Star break I started thinking about it. It's a tough deal. Next coach comes in, I'll take my time and get the guy we think can lead them and push them to higher levels. We're excited about it. Happy for Paul coming back after his injury. With Myles & his work ethic & ability, he'll improve a lot. Then the other pieces.

Simple as just needing a new voice or ...?

He did fine. It's all about motivating the players to play at a higher level. If you have their ear, it works. It goes back a long time. At some point, it's time to make a move. It won't be 100% popular but it's what's best for the franchise and I think this is.

    HC experience important?

Not important. Seen it happen too many times. It's how they motivate, lead, strategy & get respect of the players. Not important if they played in the league either. Who think Frank would have had the success he had?

    Player feedback?

I don't let my players come in and talk about the coach. That can get out of control. I talk about what to expect in the summer & injuries. The things I saw, good or bad, I bring it up.

You said All-Star break, did you think of making a move in season?

No. Frank deserved the full year. I don't like to make moves in the middle of the season. He deserved to finish it out.

    Conversations with Frank like?

We didn't meet.We talked half an hour this morning, he tried to talk me out of this decision. He loves it here. He kept bringing it up to delay the news conference and start all over again. He'll be missed. He was good for our community.

    Continuity?

It comes down to what you're looking for going forward. We got some good players & 2 guys who are really good players. How can we get the other guys to raise their game? I expect if you win 45 games, I expect more. I expect to be in the playoffs and through a few rounds. First round is always nice but don't get in the playoffs until you get until the ECF & Finals.

All-Star break, anything happen that made you think?

Our season was so up and down. Was is the players? Was it because Paul was hitting a wall? We played small early & had some success. The whole year I was waiting on Myles Turner. The voice. It really is. Everyday the same voice, guys tune it out. It happens. It's unfortunate. Frank was here 5 1/2 years, that's a long time for me.

    McHale on the list?

I would not do that to Kevin. I respect him too much. We've been through too many battles to bring him in here. It won't happen because of our relationship.

Would he be back with a year left on his deal?

He doesn't have a year left so we don't have to worry.

    Time table?

There's a lot of people gonna be calling for this job. We'll take our time. Hard to say. There's not a problem getting a HC to come here. We have some talent.

    Ever reconsider?

I'd rather not talk about that.

I won't start calling people today.

    Number of candidates?

Once I get my list, I'll go after it. Interviews are hard. They'll all say the right things. You have to pick their brains.

Disconnect with Vogel & you wanting to play small?

What we do, we sit down every summer and strategize how we want to play. We wanted to play small. When the season starts, it's his team. He has to decide how to win, big or small. He said I feel more comfortable playing two bigs than small. I really felt with Paul coming back, the four position would be easier. He said the banging would take a lot out of him. I like the small ball. Some nights we make a lot of threes. Other nights we miss shots and get beat. Over time, I think small ball would have worked, shooting a lot of threes.

Through the grapevine, we know players would like to come here & play. We'll see what happens. Our job is to make the team as strong as we can. New coach may have ideas & players he likes. We'll see what's available coming July.

    Cost of HC.

We'll do what's necessary to get the right guy.

    Any reboot of expectations?

I expect us to be better. We will be. Paul & Myles, instantly you should be better. But what will you add to that? Franchise is in a good place with some of the guys we have. I always expect greatness and team that's competitive every night.

    Solomon Hill?

Best thing to happen to him was putting a boot in his butt. He wasn't getting the job done. He was laid back. Coming off SL, he didn't play well. He didn't look like a NBA player. He was out of shape, didn't play well. He was upset and pouting. Pritchard went down to talk to him. It fired him up. I'm happy for him. Solomon plays hard. That's a talent. Once he got it, he started playing hard & got minutes. He realized who he was as a basketball player. Not 35-40 minute guy but is on a team now. Played well down the stretch. We might bring him back. Now he knows who he is as a player. That's a plus.

Talk to George & players about coaches?

No. I text Paul every once in awhile. I don't like to bother my players. I didn't want the front office bothering me when I was a player. I don't let players influence me on my decisions. It's important to get someone they all respect.

Ever meet with Frank face to face?

It's been on the phone. We had our exit interviews and had something to do right after. Yesterday he didn't come in. Talked this morning.

You don't want to be in a situation where you extend guys after 3 years and it's the wrong move. A lot of people want this job & I know why. It's a good place to live. We're Hoosiers. We treat people pretty good.

    Trade rumors?

No. This is what I was concentrating on.

    Mark Jackson?

He did an excellent job. He helped GS get where they are today.

    Pretty unprofessional of Bird.
It's ok to let someone go / not renew, but perhaps talk to him about it first?

It was obvious that this was going to happen, given the direction of Bird's sidewise comments when the Pacers were eliminated. He should have just said, "We're letting you go," when it was clear that this was the case.

Maybe Bird wanted to make sure they more or less have their next coach lined up. If that's Kevin McHale, I hope he and Bird have fun recalling what great players they were on such a great team. If the Pacers go on a tear with McHale as coach, it will be akin to our 2014-15: success in spite of the coach, not because of him.

    Bird is an *******.

If we get Vogel, I really want top notch assistants. McMillian, etc. Don't bring me Finch and trash.

Larry Bird doesnt think that you need to have played in the league to be a successful head coach. Interesting.
