Look, I get frustrated with Harden the same way most of you do. We know his warts/weaknesses but we also know he's still a top talent in today's NBA. I don't think there's a comparable player that we can acquire for him straight up but what if Danny Ainge is willing to offer a nice package of this year's picks and a couple of players? Lets say this is the package Ainge is offering:

    16th pick
    23rd pick
Nets 1st Rounder, projected to be the 3rd pick right now
    31st pick
    Jae Crowder
    Isaiah Thomas

So that's 3 1st Rounders (including a top 3 pick), the 1st pick in the 2nd Round, an all-star point guard and a good player in Crowder

    Yay or Nay?

No unless you are really sure that #3 pick is gonna be a star

You aren't guaranteed to draft a player of Harden's caliber. I say no.

Of course. Get high value while you can before all leverage is gone when everyone realizes Harden is leaving in free agency in just 2 short years from now.

Only to then be in the position Boston is in (and I guess that Houston was formerly in).

    Nah.

But if you told me Harden was leaving in two years, probably.

    Hell no.

If we'll miss on big names in free agency this and next year however, i think we should explore this idea, but not with the Celtics, i'd say more with Lakers and Sixers cause:

    1. they've better assets...maybe...let's say better youngsters
    2. they've worse gms

However, if Ainge is also ok with trading the Nets future 1st (i think it's 2018) and the swap with the Nets for next year eh...maybe they also have the Grizzlies for 2017? Not sure but that pick is also interesting.

I'd say Ainge needs to drop both Nets 1st, the swap, Grizzlies pick and Smart. If we're going to rebuild we don't need Thomas and Crowder.

So lets say the Nets pick lands at #3. From previous draft history at that number:

    2013 Otto Porter
    2012 Bradley Beal
    2011 Enes Kanter
    2010 Derrick Favors
    2009 James Harden
    2008 O.J. Mayo
    2007 Al Horford
    2006 Adam Morrison
    2005 Deron Williams
    2004 Ben Gordon
    2003 Carmelo Anthony
    2002 Mike Dunleavy
    2001 Pau Gasol
    2000 Darius Miles
    1999 Baron Davis
    1998 Raef LaFrentz
    1997 Chauncey Billups
    1996 Shareef Abdur-Rahim
    1995 Jerry Stackhouse
    1994 Grant Hill
    1993 Anfernee Hardaway
    1992 Christian Laettner
    1991 Billy Owens
    1990 Chris Jackson
    1989 Sean Elliott
    1988 Charles Smith
    1987 Dennis Hopson
    1986 Chris Washburn
    1985 Benoit Benjamin
    1984 Michael Jordan
    1983 Rodney McCray
    1982 Dominique Wilkins
    1981 Buck Williams
    1980 Kevin McHale

So you could either pick the GOAT or end up with Adam Morrison lol. You have a 50/50 shot of picking an All-Star (all-stars in italics)

Even then that isn't enough. Cavs had 3 top picks and weren't relevant again until LeBron came back to them. You think shipping out Harden we will rebound fast with just one?

there are, as Clyde would say, "ple-thor-uh" of undersized forwards for Morey to look at this year.

So let's trade James Harden for a draft pick or picks that we HOPE will ONE DAY be a top five player LIKE James Harden??

    Umm... No.

Look I get it... you guys want to try and take your Superstar back to the Superstar Store, and get a new Superstar that you will LIKE MORE, but it just doesn't work like that because.... there is no Superstar Store with guarantees... just go ask the Philly fans.

Take and enjoy your superstar while you got him because after they are gone you will wish you had them back... again go ask Philly fans about Iverson another flawed superstar.

I would only do it if Boston gets the 1st or 2nd pick and would also want the picks they have from Brooklyn in 2017/2018 and they take corey brewer.

So to start talking the trade would be something like

    (Rockets) (Boston)
2016 boston (top 5 pick) James Harden
2016 boston pick from dallas (around 16th pick) Corey Brewer
    2016 Boston 2nd round draft pick(31st pick)
    2017 Boston pick from Brooklyn
    2018 Boston pock from brooklyn

with other fillers to make the trade work.
