There's a 10-day waiting period from the day you report to the minor league team. If someone else goes on the disabled list or bereavement list before 10 days have elapsed, the team can bring the optioned player back early.
Can Gomez go on the breavement list? What are the options if he has to miss 3 or 4 games? Tucker and Gonzalez? If Jake can't be recalled for 10 days it has to be someone on the 40 man. Aplin has been in a terrible slump at Fresno.
The bereavement list is only possible if the player has a gravely ill relative or if a death has occurred in his family. I'd imagine that they'd have to provide proof of these events.
As bad as he's been, disruption to his season via injury could only make things worse. If we want to be any good, we probably need him in the lineup hoping he will get things together
I do, thankfully Friday's game is a West Coast game, so I'll be able to just go to sleep instead. The weekend will be harder.
They need to get Tuckers bat going... if its even possible for it to get going... perhaps he just is who he is, but between DH and LF, should be in the lineup daily to try and get a rhythm.
We face Sean Manaea (LHP) in his MLB debut tomorrow, so I think at least one of Tucker/Valuena sit, and both if Gomez can go. Surprising though, Manaea hasn't shown to really be better against lefties in his minor league career (he's been great against them this season, but very small sample). His biggest weakness is walks, so Valbuena might not be a bad option. Marwin will start, just a matter of where.
Good win against a good pitcher. Altuve, like i said a long time ago is having an MVP season, and all started in ST. This year in ST he was taking a lot of pitches, and he continued doing the same once the season started. A lot of walks, plus the power he developed last year, plus his quick bat spraying the ball and getting a lot of hits, this is a guy that has the potential to lead the team, and for that he only needs to improve on the bases. Gattis had 2 very very good at bats, and drove runs in both. His last 2 games played he has delivered at least twice per game, he should continue to be the DH. McHugh was very very good last night, did not lasted long, but did very good in the 5 innings, only real problem was a Canó for him. Springer quietly is having a good season. Rasmus continues to deliver. We need improvement from Sipp and still worried about Giles as he allowed a hit and a walk (did not see him pitch so i don't know if the hit was a ball that should had been caught). Harris continues to pitch great, right now our best reliever. Luthnow struck gold with this guy. This was an important win, and we neeeeeeed to win the series at Oakland. We are not facing Gray in the series, i think we SHOULD win it. Marwin will play at least twice and will be good for the Astros.

I like this line up because there is less garbage at the bottom of the line up. Ideally I would make Gattis catch and have Tucker DH.
Its amazing that the Astros 1-4 leads baseball in basically every meaningful statistical category (HR's, OBP, slugging, RBI).... and that is with Correa not really busting out yet. If they can just get *anything* from the bottom half of this lineup, it goes a long way. Even Castro getting on a couple times last night really helped turnover the lineup and create the multiple RBI opportunities for the top (and lets face it... they're not going to be god-awful forever with RISP. They're at historic lows right now).
Not that it will happen, but once again I like flipping Springer and Altuve, just for the sake of it. I didn't watch yesterday, but Gomez for the 2 previous games has looked better, so I'd flip him and White. Part of me is excited to see Manaea. Before he got hurt, he was who I wanted over Appel.
I agree with you on all points, and I have even wondered if maybe blending in a lesser bat at the top of the order or the middle of the order would help, but I don't think I would do so at this point. I would just get Marwin in the line up at 3rd base. The good news is that the Astros are likely to get another bat at 3rd or catcher; and it is unlikely that Gomez keeps hitting this bad. When that happens the Astros SHOULD have one of the best offenses in baseball. The Padres have talked to the Astros and Rangers about Derek Norris. The Astros have also spoken to the Brewers about LuCroy; but the asking price has been extremely high. I still think you will see the Astros upgrade at catcher before the deadline.
If he is who we've seen so far this season, he won't be on the roster long. His asset is supposed to be his bat, and if he's not hitting, he's not worth having around. If they're going to give Gattis as many DH starts as they have been, I'd rather they send Tucker down to AAA to get some regular at bats for a month or two and let Gattis sink or swim. Unless there's an injury (and probably more than one injury to an outfielder), I don't see Tucker getting a lot of at bats playing LF.
